Fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated in the center cracked plate of KS SB41 steel and the relation between the crack growth rate and various mechanical parameters was studied at small scale yielding, large scale yielding and full scale yielding. The crack opening ratio U was about 0.6-0.8 and had the larger value in the case of load control than that of strain control. Effective stress intensity factor range, .DELTA.K$_{eff}$ and J integral range, .DELTA.J were obtained from the notion of crack opening, and the crack growth rate was expressed with these values. The value of J integral range increased rapidly at stress ratio, R=0 in full scale yielding of load control test. COD value also increased rapidly with the increase of ligament net stress at large scale yielding of load control test.t.
At a brewery, the base plate-to-shell weld seam of a $90-m^3$ vertical cylindrical steel tank failed catastrophically. The 4 ton tank "took off" like a rocket leaving its contents behind, and landed on a van, crushing it. The top of the tank reached a height of 30 m. The internal overpressure responsible for the failure was an estimated 60 kPa. A rupture disc rated at < 50 kPa provided overpressure protection and thus prevented the tank from being covered by the European Pressure Equipment Directive. This safeguard failed and it was later discovered that the rupture disc had been installed upside down. The organizational root cause of this incident may be a fundamental lack of appreciation of the hazards of large volumes of low-pressure compressed air or gas. A contributing factor may be that the standard piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) symbol for a rupture disc may confuse and lead to incorrect installation. Compressed air systems are ubiquitous. The medium is not toxic or flammable. Such systems however, when operated at "slight overpressure" can store a great deal of energy and thus constitute a hazard that ought to be addressed by safety managers.

In recent years, to reduce self-weight of structural elements, the use of SCP (Steel Concrete Plate) instead of prestressed concrete is increasing. Because SCP has a complicated sectional shape and includes a large number of studs, the use of high-fluidity concrete is required. Therefore, in this study, to prevent the restrained shrinkage behavior by the stud, the effects of using an expansive agent (EA) and shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) were investigated, and the optimal mixture proportions to maximize the filling capacity were determined based on the fine aggregate ratio. The test results indicated that the combined use of EA and SRA exhibited the smallest shrinkage. The ratio of the crushed sand and washed sea sand was determined to be 5:5, and the proper fine aggregate ratio was found to be 55.6%, because when the ratio was too high, a decrease in strength and an increase in shrinkage strain were expected. The high-fluidity concrete effectively filled the large-sized SCP module.
Welding-induced buckling distortion is one of the most problematic concerns in both design and fabrication of welded thin-plate structures. This paper deals with experimental and numerical results of the welding-induced longitudinal and/or buckling distortion occurring in welding of 6mm-thick AH36 high strength steel plates. Effects of the heat input and the plate size on the distortion were experimentally evaluated for square plates. Bead-on-plate welding was performed with the submerged arc welding process along the middle line of plate specimens. Experimental results showed that the longitudinal distortion made a single curvature in the plate, and the distortion magnitude along the weld centerline was proportional to the heat input and the plate size. The experimental results were used to examine the validity of the numerical simulation procedure for welding-induced distortion where the longitudinal distortion mode and magnitude were numerically quantified. Three-dimensional, large deformation, welding simulations were performed for selected weld models. Numerical results of the distortion mode and magnitude were in a good agreement with experimental ones. Depending on the presence of halting the distortion growth during the cooling cycle of welding, the condition discriminating buckling distortion from longitudinal distortion was established. Eigenvalue analyses were performed to check the buckling instability of tested plates with different sizes subjected to different heat inputs. The perturbation load pattern for the analysis was extracted from longitudinal inherent strain distributions. Critical buckling curve from the eigenvalue analyses revealed that the buckling instability is manifested when plate size or heat input increases.
The design standards, such as AISC-LRFD (2005) and KBC-2005, specify the maximum width-to-thickness ratio that can be used for computing the strength of the concrete-filled tube (CFT), and do not include any formula for computing the strength when the width-to-thickness ratio is over the limit. This paper proposes a strength equation for CFTs with a large width-to-thickness ratio by acknowledging the fact that the stiffened slender steel platehas substantial postbuckling strength, and that it therefore can be more economical to use it. The equation adopts the concept of effective width, which is very useful for plate analysis. By comparing the strengths of AISC2005, KBC2005, and the proposed method with the results of the experiment, where the width-to-thickness ratio was regarded as the main parameter, the applicability of the proposed method was verified.

A study was conducted on the effects of carbon, tungsten, and vanadium on the wear properties and surface roughness of four High Speed Steel (HSS) rolls manufactured by the centrifugal casting method. Hot-rolling simulation tests were carried out using a high-temperature wear tester capable of controlling speed, load, and temperature. HSS rolls contained a large amount (up to 25 vol.%) of carbides such as MC, $M_{2}C$, $M_{7}C_{3}$, and $M_{6}C$ carbides formed in the tempered martensite matrix. The matrix consisted mainly of lath tempered martensite when the carbon content in the matrix was small, and contained a considerable amount of plate tempered martensite when the carbon content increased. The high-temperature wear test results indicated that the wear properties and surface roughness of the rolls improved when the amount of hard MC carbides formed inside solidification cells increased. The rolls distribution was also homogeneous. The best wear properties and surface roughness were obtained from a roll where a large amount of MC carbides was homogeneously distributed in the lath tempered martensite matrix. The proper contents of carbon equivalent, tungsten equivalent, and vanadium were 2.0~2.3%, 9~10%, and 5~6%, respectively.
To mitigate vibrations, tuned mass dampers(TMD) are widely used for long span bridges or high-rise buildings. Due to some durability concerns, such as fluid degradation, oil leakage, etc., the alternative solutions, such as the non-contacted eddy current damping (ECD), are proposed for mechanical devices in small scales. In the present study, a new eddy current damping TMD (ECD-TMD) is proposed and developed for large scale civil infrastructure applications. Starting from parametric study on finite element analysis of the ECD-TMD, the new design is enhanced via using the permanent magnets to eliminate the power need and a combination of a copper plate and a steel plate to improve the energy dissipation efficiency. Additional special design includes installation of two permanent magnets at the same side above the copper plate to easily adjust the gap as well as the damping. In a case study, the proposed ECD-TMD is demonstrated in the application of a steel arch bridge to mitigate the wind-induced vibrations of the flexible hangers. After a brief introduction of the configuration and the installation process for the damper, the mitigation effects are measured for the ambient vibration and forced vibration scenarios. The results show that the damping ratios increase to 3% for the weak axis after the installation of the ECD-TMDs and the maximum vibration amplitudes can be reduced by 60%.
This article deals the theory for solving an inverse problem of plate structures using the frequency-domain information instead of classical time-domain delays or free vibration eigenmodes or eigenvalues. A reduced set of output parameters characterizing the defect is used as a regularization technique to drastically overcome noise problems that appear in imaging techniques. A deconvolution scheme from an undamaged specimen overrides uncertainties about the input signal and other coherent noises. This approach provides the advantage that it is not necessary to visually identify the portion of the signal that contains the information about the defect. The theoretical model for Quantitative nondestructive evaluation, the relationship between the real and ideal models, the finite element method (FEM) for the forward problem, and inverse procedure for detecting the defects are developed. The theoretical formulation is experimentally verified using dynamic responses of a steel plate under impact loading at several points. The signal synthesized by FEM, the residual, and its components are analyzed for different choices of time window. The noise effects are taken into account in the inversion strategy by designing a filter for the cost functional to be minimized. The technique is focused toward a exible and rapid inspection of large areas, by recovering the position of the defect by means of a single accelerometer, overriding experimental calibration, and using a reduced number of impact events.
Nonlinear forced vibration properties of three-layered plates containing graphene platelets (GPL) filled skins and an auxetic core have been inquired within the present paper. Owning reduced weight as well as reduced stiffness, rectangle-shaped auxetic cores have been frequently made from novel techniques such as additive manufacturing. Here, the rectangle shape core is amplified via the graphene-filled layers knowing that the layers possess uniform and linear graphene gradations. The rectangle shape core has the equivalent material specifications pursuant to relative density value. The sandwich plate is formulated pursuant to Kirchhoff plate theory while a numerical trend has been represented to discretize the plate equations. Next, an analytical trend has been performed to establish the deflection-frequency plots. Large deflections, core density and GPL amplification have showed remarkable impacts on dynamic response of three-layered plates.
Recently, High Tensile Steel is adapt to thin plate on the steel structure and marine structure is used widely, It is possible for buckling happens great. Specially, Initial deflection of ship structure happens in place absence necessarily by heat processing of welding or cutting etc. This Initial Deflection is exerted negative impact when thin plate absence complicated nonlinear behaviour accompanied secondary budding. As a result, must idealize initial deflection that occurrence is possible to endow stability and accuracy in the hull structure or marine structure and reflect in early structure design considering secondary buckling. Longi direction of compressive load interacts and analyzed finite element series analysis that apply various kinds initial deflection shape measured actually on occasion that is arranged simply supported condition in this research. Applied ANSYS (elasto-plasticity large deformation finite element method) to be mediocrity finite element program for analysis method and analysis control used in Newton-Raphson method & Arc-length method.
