  • Model predictive control algorithm requires a relevant model of the system to be controlled. Unfortunately, the first principle model describing a polymerization reaction system has a large number of parameters to be estimated. Thus there is a need for the identification and control of a polymerization reactor system by using available input-output data. In this work, the polynomial auto-regressive moving average (ARMA) models are employed as the input-output model and combined into the nonlinear model predictive control algorithm based on the successive linearization method. Simulations are conducted to identify the continuous styrene polymerization reactor system. The input variables are the jacket inlet temperature and the feed flow rate whereas the output variables are the monomer conversion and the weight-average molecular weight. The polynomial ARMA models obtained by the system identification are used to control the monomer conversion and the weight-average molecular weight in a continuous styrene polymerization reactor It is demonstrated that the nonlinear model predictive controller based on the polynomial ARMA model tracks the step changes in the setpoint satisfactorily. In conclusion, the polynomial ARMA model is proven effective in controlling the continuous styrene polymerization reactor.

  • Triphenylamine derivatives play important roles as hole transporting materials in organic light emitting devices. However, low molecular weight triphenylamine derivatives show low glass transition temperature and aggregation behavior, and the vapor deposition step of low molecular weight materials is incompatible with large area display fabrication. Conventional polymer PEDOT-PSS HTL has serious drawbacks such as the ITO anode corrosion, poor surface energy match with aromatic EMLs. To solve these problems, we introduced crosslinkable units to triphenylamine-based polymers to make insoluble HTL by thermal curing following spin-coating. Electrochemical and optical properties of the new hole transporting materials were investigated. In addition, the device characteristics obtained with new hole transporting polymers were investigated in details.

  • The aerobic bacterium Xanthomonas campestris was cultivated continuously in a three-phase fluidized bed bioreactor to produce extracellular polysaccharide xanthan, Fluidized particles of 8.0 mm glass beads were used for disintegrating the large air bubbles even at high viscosities to improve the gas-liquid oxygen transfer rate. Xanthin productivity [kg xanthan/kg cell dry mass·h] and molecular weight increased, with dilution rate in the continuous xanthan fermentations. The specific xanthan productivities were not limited by the oxygen transfer rate and were much higher in the continuous cultivations than those predicted by the results of the batch xanthan fermentations.

  • Distributions of physiological inhibitors of a tau-type pumpkin glutathione S-transferase(CmGSTU3) have been investigated in different organs of pumpkin plants, including the onion bulb and water hyacinth root. Inhibitory effects were observed in alcoholic extracts of all plant parts, but the extracts prepared from the roots of either water hyacinth or pumpkin plant showed the highest effect on CmGSTU3 toward 1-chloro-2,4- dinitrobenzene(CDNB). Results of various chromatographies indicated that a number of inhibitory substances were present in the alcoholic extract of each plant organ. Some macromolecules in the plant extracts exhibited inhibitory effects; however, the extracts might contain a large number of unknown low-molecular-weight inhibitory substances. Some of the low-molecular-weight inhibitors in water hyacinth root extract showed characteristics fluoresce under UV light.

  • Several approaches have been made to access the mechanism of fusion in chick myoblast in vitro. Lactoperoxidase-catalyzed iodination was applied to labell cell surface proteins during myogenesis. Quantitative as well as qualitative changes were observed in $^131$I surface components of prefusion and postfusion cells. Two proteins with a molecular weight of 165K and 93K daltons were observed to appear at the onset of fusion as compared to prefusion stage. At the same time, 245K dalton protein decreased whereas the low molecular weight proteins increased consistently. The decrease of high molecular weight proteins appears to be associated with the cell cycle of myoblast during differentiation. The increased appearance of low molecular weight proteins might be due to the proteolytic cleavage of the high molecular weight proteins. Examination of intracellulr cAMP levels during fusion has revealed that a large but transient increase in cAMP occurs before the onset of fusion. This result suggests a causal relationship between the increase of cAMP and the onset of fusion, and further, that differentiating myoblasts are synthronized to a high degree. During the course of myoblast differentiation, at least four lowe molecular weight proteins, which different from major surface proteins iodinated, were identifiable in the culture medium. These proteins could be ascribed to be released from the membrane by proteolytic cleavage of surface proteins in the course of myoblast fusion. The significance of cell surface alterations and the released proteins during the fusion, the involvement of cAMP in the onset of fusion and the possibility that fusion is promoted by external factor(s) are discussed.

  • A study on elemental speciation of trace metals in lake water (Lake Biwa in Japan) has been carried out by a size exclusion chromatography (SEC) / inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) system. Before analysis, the water sample was preconcentrated with a ultrafiltration technique, where the large molecules with molecular weight larger than 10,000 were concentrated. Then the preconcentrated water samples (500-1000 fold) were analyzed by a SEC/ICP-MS system. Most trace metals were found at the UV absorption peaks corresponding to the molecular weights of ca. 300,000 and 10,000-50,000, where trace metals were on-line detected by ICP-MS. The results suggest that many of trace metals exist as the large organic molecules-metal complexes in natural water.

  • The molecular size distribution and fluorescence properties of soil fulvic acids (FA) were characterized by using gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and luminescence spectroscopy. The objectives of this work were to fractionate the FA extracted from a forest soil into different nominal molecular size using GFC system and to characterize the fluorescence properties (excitation, emission and synchronous) of these fractions using luminescence spectrometer. The GFC column was calibrated with polyethylene glycols, acetone and dextrane Blue. The total permeation volume of the GFC system was 404 mL and the void volume 130 mL. The GFC molecular weight of the soil FA was in the range of 190~8,900 Dalton and the molecular weight at the peak on the chromatogram was 930 Dalton. The fluorescence intensity ratio ($I_{498nm}/I_{390nm}$) was found to be increased with an increasing molecular weight. This results may suggest that the fulvic acid fractions with high molecular weight have large amount of the condensed aromatic compound.

  • High density lipophorin-L (HDLP-L) was purified from the hemolymph of Bombyx modi using KBr density gradient ultracentrifugation and gel permeation chromatographv (Sephadex G-2001. Lipophorin has native molecular weight of 730 Nd and consists of Apo-Lp I and Apo-Lp II with molecular weights of 250 Kd and 90 Kd, respectively. Lp contains large amounts of glutamine & glutamic acid, threonine, leucine but small amounts of cysteic acid & oxidized cystine, tyrosine, methionine. Lp also contains diacylglycerol, cholesterol, phosphatidylcholine, and phosphatidylethanolamine. Anti-lipophorin showed positive reaction with fat body and ovarial extracts and also revealed immunological identity with lipophorin of Fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea. Lipophorin maintains constant level during larval and pupal stapes but greatlv increases during adult stage in both male and female. Apo-Lp III was purified from adult hemolymph. Hemolymph was subjected to KBr ultracentrifusation and Lp-free fraction was submitted to cation exchange chromatosraphy after ammonium sulfate precipitation. Apo-Lp III has molecular weight of 17 Kd, and similar amino acid composition ar those of other species Lp but contains high amounts of tryptophan which other are tacking in.

  • The effect of operating parameters (reaction temperature and time) and reaction modes (batch and semi-batch) on the behavior of amino acid production from hydrothermal decomposition of fish-derived wastes was investigated. The amino acids obtained in batch experiments at temperature of 250$^{\circ}C$ were mainly alanine (Ala) and glycine (Gly) at maximum yield of 65 and 28mg/g-dry fish, respectively. At relatively lower temperature of 200$^{\circ}C$, the yield of high-molecular-weight amino acids such as aspartic acid (Asp) and serine (Ser) is high, but decreases as temperature increases. It is likely that high-molecular-weight amino acids decompose faster than low-molecular ones. Semi-batch mode of reaction suppressed decomposition of amino acids into organic acids (or volatile materials) by continuously removing the products from the reaction zone as soon as they are formed. Thus, large amount of high-molecular-weight amino acids such as Asp and Ser at this reaction mode was observed.

  • We measured shear viscosity of copoly(styrene(St)/butyl methacrylate(BMA)) (co-PSB) particles, with a capillary rheometer at $170^{\circ}C$, prepared by suspension polymerization with hydrophobic silica as a stabilizer. co-PSB particles with the weight average molecular weights of lower than 74,800 g/mol displayed a Newtonian behavior at low shear rates. With the weight average molecular weight exceeding 136,800 g/mol, co-PSB particles showed shear thinning against shear rates and the absolute value of the slopes between shear viscosity vs. shear rate increased. When the ratio between St and BMA changed from 7/3 to 5/5 to 3/7, shear viscosity and glass transition decreased despite similar molecular weights. When the ratio was 1/9, it showed a large increase in initial shear viscosity despite reduced glass transition. Shear viscosity exhibited an increase in proportion to carbon black concentration. The effect of carbon black concentration on the shear viscosity of co-PSB composites was less pronounced compared to varying molecular weights and/or compositional ratio.
