In the previous studies, settlement behaviors of granular compaction piles have generally been analyzed with an evaluation of the settlement reduction factor based on tile load-sharing ratio and the replacement ratio. In this approach, however, since the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as the composite ground, only the difference of a relative vertical strength between piles and soils is taken into account without reflecting lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles. In the companion research paper, the method of estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles was proposed by synthetically considering a vertical strength of the ground, lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles, the strength of pile materials, a pile diameter, and an installation distance of the pile. In the presented study, to validate a propriety of the previously proposed method, large scale field load tests and three dimensional numerical analyses are performed. The results are analyzed in detail and compared with the predicted settlements by the proposed method. Finally, a simple method to estimate the settlement of granular compaction piles is suggested for an easy application of the practical design.

The rapid growth of the economy recently gas led to increasing social needs for large scaled structures, such as high-rise buildings and long span bridges. In building these large-scaled structures the trend has been to construct foundations beating on or in rock masses in order to ensure stability and serviceability of the structure under several significant loads. However. when designing the drilled shaft foundation socketed in rock masses in Korea, the bearing capacity for the pier used to be determined by using the empirical expression, which depends on the compressive strength of the rock, or presumable bearing capacity recommended on foreign references or manuals. In this study, numerical analyses are used to trace rock-socketed pile behavior and are made alike with pile load test result in field. The result of this numerical analyses study have shown that following factors have a significant influence on the load capacity and settlement of the pier. Significant influence first factor of the geometry of the socket as defined by the length to diameter ratio. Second factor of the modulus of the rock both around the socket and below the base. third factor of the condition of the end of the pier with respect to the removal of drill cuttings and other loose material from the bottom of the socket.

Currently a large number of high rise building projects are under plan and a mega foundation system to support this high load with safety is requiring. The foundation of a highrise building is displaced by the building load, which influence the behavior of a super structure in reverse. In this aspect, the structural interaction analysis between a foundation and a super structure is necessary. In this study, the relationship of a superstructure of building and a foundation has been reviewed, considering the tendency of design from a capacity driven design to a performance design. Two different case studies have been introduced to help understand this relationship in more specific, the first case is the high rise building founded on a mat system on rock and the second is that on large diameter bored piles on soft ground condition.

In soft ground the settlement criterion usually governs. Therefore, it is very important not only reasonable assessment of the allowable bearing capacity of the soil but also reasonable assessment of settlement. In the previous studies by many other researchers, load concentration ratio and settlement reduction factor are usually proposed for estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles. In the previous studies, the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as composite ground and the analysis is performed with in the basis of this assumption. However, the lateral deformation of granular compaction pile could not be considered and only the relative vertical strength between pile and soils could be considered in the analysis. In this study, a method adapting the Tresca failure criterion is proposed for calculating settlement of granular compaction pile. Proposed method can be considered the strength of pile material, pile diameter, installing distance of pile and the deformation behavior of vertical and horizontal directions of pile. In the presented study, large-scale field load test is performed and the results are described. Also, predictions of settlements from the proposed method are compared with the results of the load test. In addition, a series of parametric study is performed and the design parameters are analyzed.
Progressive increase in population causing land scarcity, which is forcing construction industry to build multistory buildings having underground basements. Normally, basements are constructed for parking facility. This research work evaluates important factors which have caused the collapse of pile-anchor system at under construction five star hotel. 21 m deep excavation is carried out, to have five basements, after installation of 600 mm diameter cast in-situ contiguous concrete piles at plot periphery. To retain piles and backfill, soil anchors are installed as pit excavation is proceeded. Before collapse, anchors are designed by federal highway administration procedure and four anchor rows are installed with three strands per anchor in first row and four in remaining. However, after collapse, system is modeled and analyzed in plaxis using mohr-coulomb method. It is investigated that in-appropriate evaluation of soil properties, additional surcharge loads, lesser number of strands per anchor, shorter grouted body length and shorter pile embedment depth caused large deformations to occur which governed the collapse of east side pile wall. To resume work, old anchors are assumed to be standing at one factor of safety and then system is analyzed using finite element approach. Finally, it is concluded to use four strands per anchor in first new row and five strands in remaining three with increase in grouted and un-grouted body lengths.
Pack micropiles were recently developed to improve pile capacity of general micropiles. Pack micropiles were made by warping thread bar or steel pipe of general micropile by geotexlile pack and grouting inside the pack with pressure. According to the pressure, the boring hole could be enlarged. A series of pile uplift tests were performed on three micropiles. Two out of the three piles were the pack micropiles and the other was the general micropile, in which a thread bar was used in the boring hole. According to the pressure applied to the pack micropiles, the diameter of boring hole was enlarged from 152 mm to 220 mm. Unit skin friction mobilized on side surfaces of micropiles increased with displacement of pile head and reached on a constant value, which represents that the relative displacement between piles (or thread bar) and soils was reached on critical state. And the uplift resistance of pack micropile was higher than that of general micropile. Two reasons can be considered: One is that the frictional surface increases due to enlarging diameter of boring holes and the other is that the unit skin friction could increase due to compressing effect of surrounding soils by soil displacement as much as the enlarging volume of boring hole. The compression effect appeared at deeper layer rather than surface layer. The unit skin friction mobilized on micropiles with small diameter was higher than the ones on large bored piles.

An energy pile is one of the novel ground heat exchangers (GHEX's) that is a economical alternative to the conventional closed-loop vertical GHEX. The combined system of both a structural foundation and a GHEX contains a heat exchange pipe inside the pile foundation and allows a working fluid circulating through the pipe, inducing heat exchange with the ground formation. In this paper, a group of energy piles equipped with parallel U-type (5, 8 and 10 pairs) heat exchange pipes was constructed in a test-bed by fabricating in large-diameter cast-in-place concrete piles. In addition, a closed-loop vertical GHEX with 30m depth was constructed nearby to conduct in-situ thermal response tests (TRTs) and to compare with the thermal performance of the cast-in-place energy piles. A series of thermal performance tests was carried out with application of an artificial cooling and heating load to evaluate the heat exchange rate of energy piles. The applicability of cast-in-place energy piles was evaluated by comparing the relative heat exchange efficiency and heat exchange rate with preceding studies. Finally, it is concluded that the cast-in-place energy piles constructed in the test-bed demonstrate effective and stable thermal performance compared with the other types of GHEX.
Bi-directional pile load test (briefly called 'BDH PLT') cannot be performed at loading levels where ultimate bearing capacity could be assessed in field, it is not possible to precisely determine both ultimate load and yield load and under loading. Since the load is transmitted separately to the skin and the end unlike the static pile load test (briefly called 'SPLT') and the direction of loading on the skin is opposite, such methods could have a result different from actual movements of shafts. In this study, three-dimensional finite element method (briefly called '3D FEM') analysis was conducted from results of the BDH PLT, made with barret piles, which were large-diameter cast-in-place concrete piles, and the calculated design constants were applied to the 3D FEM analysis of the SPLT to interpret them numerically and then, actual behaviors of cast-in-place concrete piles were estimated. First, using the results of the BDH PLT with cast-in-place concrete piles, behaviors of the piles made by loading upwards and downwards were analyzed to calculate load-displacement. Second, the design constants, calculated by the 3D FEM analysis and the back analysis, were applied on the 3D FEM analysis for the SPLT, and from these results, behaviors of the SPLT through the BDH PLT was analyzed. Last, the results of the 3D FEM analysis of the SPLT through the BDH PLT was expressed in relationships as {A ratio of bearing capacity of the SPLT and of the BDH PLT (y)} ~ {A ratio of reference displacement and pile circumference (x)}, and they were all classified by reference displacement at 10.0 mm, 15.0 mm, and 25.4 mm.

Recently, several researches on the development of new economical anchor systems have been performed to support floating structures. This study focused on the group suction piles, which connect mid-sized suction piles instead of a single suction pile with large-diameter. The group suction pile shows the complex bearing behavior with translation and rotation, so it is difficult to apply conventional design methods. Therefore, the numerical modeling technique was developed to evaluate the horizontal bearing capacity of the group suction piles in clay. The technique models suction piles as beam elements and soil reaction as non-linear springs. To analyze the applicability of the modeling, the horizontal load-movement curves of the proposed modeling were compared with those of three-dimensional finite element analyses. The comparison showed that the modeling underestimates the capacity and overestimate the displacement corresponding to the maximum capacity. Therefore, the correction factors for the horizontal soil resistance was proposed to match the bearing capacity from the three-dimensional finite element analyses.
The rotate penetration pile is a type of displacement pile: the surrounding soil is displaced when installing the pile, and the pile can exert a large bearing power and pullout force. In addition, it uses displaced soil method that does not generate slime, and its applications are increasing in foreign countries owing to the environmentally friendly characteristics such as small noise and vibration. However, mostly driven piles-which are directly driven to the ground, and bored pile- pre-fabricated piles are buried to prebored underground, are used; however, rotate penetration piles still have limited use. Most of the laboratory tests have been carried out until now to identify the support behavior after installation of piles and ground construction, the evaluating the support behavior is lacking due to the rotation intrusive process of the rotate penetration piles. Therefore, this study used indoor experiments simulating rotation intrusive process in weathered soil, to evaluate the bearing power behavior for the weathered soil, varying the diameter of the helical bearing plates, helical bearing plate spacing, number of the helical bearing plates, and helical bearing plate specifications. As the outcome of this study, the helical pile bearing power evaluation results, change in bearing power in accordance with main specifications, and review on the comparative analysis with the existing theories were provided.
