With the increased development in downtown underground space facilities that vertically cross under a railway at a shallow depth, the demand for non-open cut method is increasing. However, most construction sites still adopt the pipe roof method, where medium and large diameter steel pipes are pressed in to form a roof, enabling excavation of the inside space. Among the many factors that influence the loosening region and loads that occur while pressing in steel pipes, the size of the pipe has the largest impact, and this factor may correspond to the magnitude of load applied to the underground structure inside the steel pipe roof. The super equilibrium method (SEM) has been developed to minimize ground disturbance and loosening load, and uses small diameter pipes of approximately 114 mm instead of conventional medium and large diameter pipes. This small diameter steel pipe is called an SEM pile. After SEM piles are pressed in and the grouting reinforcement is constructed, a crossing structure is pressed in by using a hydraulic jack without ground subsidence or heaving. The SEM pile, which plays the role of timbering, is a fore-poling pile of approximately 5 m length that prevents ground collapse and supports surface load during excavation of toe part. The loosening region should be adequately calculated to estimate the spacing and construction length of the piles and stiffness of members. In this paper, we conducted a comparative analysis of calculations of loosening load that occurs during the press-in of SEM pile to obtain an optimal design of SEM. We analyzed the influence of factors in main theoretical and empirical formulas applied for calculating loosening regions, and carried out FEM analysis to see an appropriate loosening load to the SEM pile. In order to estimate the soil loosening caused by actual SEM-pile indentation and excavation, a steel pipe indentation reduction model test was conducted. Soil subsidence and soil loosening were investigated quantitatively according to soil/steel pipe (H/D).
The construction of the road NATM tunnel, which undergoes the weathered zone of the mountain, was in process with the reinforcement methods such as the rock bolt, shotcrete depositing, and the multi step grout with large diameter steel pipe. The collapse from the ceiling, and on the ground surface area(sink hole), of which were measured to be 25m from the ground surface($V=12m(W){\times}14m(L){\times}5m(H)=840m^3$), as well as excessive displacements in the tunnel, had occurred. In order to execute the necessary reconstruction work, the causes of the surface collapses were inspected through the field investigation, in-situ tests, and numerical analysis. As a result, several proper solutions were suggested for both internal and external reinforcements for the tunnel. As a result of numerical analysis, the collapsed zone of the tunnel was reinforced up to 0.5D~1.0D laterally by the cement grouting on the ground surface, 0.5D longitudinally by the multi step grout with large diameter steel pipe in tunnel. With further reinforcement implemented by rebars in lining, the forward horizontal boring was executed to the rest of the tunnel to evaluate the overall status of the tunnel face. Appropriate reinforcement methods were provided if needed.

GRP pipe (Glass-fiber Reinforced Plastic Pipe) lines making use of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) are generally thinner, lighter, and stronger than the existing concrete or steel pipe lines, and it is excellent in stiffness/strength per unit weight. In this study, we present the result of field test for buried GRP pipes with large diameter(2,400mm). The vertical and horizontal ring deflections are measured for 387 days. The short-term deflection measured by the field test is compared with the result predicted by the Iowa formula. In addition, the long-term ring deflection is predicted by using the procedure suggested in ASTM D 5365(ANNEX) in the range of 40 to 60 years of service life of the pipe based on the experimental results. From the study, it was found that the long-term vertical and horizontal ring deflection up to 60 years is less than the 5% ring deflection limitation.
The tunnel is excavated through the alluvial layer composed of sand and gravel with groundwater deposited on rock. A portion of upper part of the tunnel is located in the alluvial layer and there are several buildings just above the curved section of the tunnel. It is necessary to prevent from sand-flowing into the tunnel due to low strength of the alluvial, high groundwater level and shallow depth of the tunnel from the ground surface. For this, the alluvial around the tunnel is pre-reinforced by umbrella arch method with multi-stage grouting through large diameter steel pipes or jet grouting before excavating the tunnel. The effect of the pre-reinforcement of the tunnel and the safety of the buildings are monitored by measurement of ground deformation occurred during tunnelling.
Pre-reinforcement with umbrella arch grouting is conducted around a tunnel where a portion of the upper part of the tunnel is located in a sand and gravel layer. Surroundings of a first tunnel situated below groundwater table are reinforced with LW or SSM that is composed of ultra-fine cement and injected into multi-stages through large diameter steel pipes. With them, a first tunnel is safely excavated without both leaking of groundwater and fallings of sand and gravel from the arch. A second tunnel where groundwater is drained down to the bedrock is reinforced with jet grouting. The effect of the pre-grouting reinforcement is monitored by checking whether groundwater is dripping or sand or gravel is falling from the arch of the tunnels.
With building structures becoming higher and having longer spans, new structural steel with better strength, thicker plate, and performance may be required rather than conventional structural steel. TMC steel is widely used in building structures largely due to its excellent seismic performance, superior weldability, and design strength that is not affected by plate thickness. To make use of TMC steel in pipe structures with large diameter and heavy wall, however, the this study, the degradation of material properties in submerged are welded SM520TMC steel pipes and tubes was evaluated using variable fabrication process and material change. Degradation test results showed that the yield and ultimate strength increased and elongation decreased regardless of the mode of fabrication, i.e., through roll bending or press forming, or steel used, i.e., domestic SM520TMC steel or SM520TMC steel from Japan.

The welded connection is known as an essential factor for establishing qualified construction and/or maintenance of wrapped steel pipe. In this study, welded connection conditions in the coated pipes with large diameter (over 700 mm) in Korea water distribution systems were estimated for suggesting technically and economically available welded connection method. For the study analysis, current steel pipe usage and accident cases were investigated. In addition, the characteristics of each welded connection method and automatic or manual connection techniques were also compared and estimated. As results, automatic welded connection method is superior than manual welded connection method in aspect of pure construction cost (average 9%) or pure welded connection cost (average 13.5%). When the poor welding-working situations in Korea are considered such as high tolerance of out-of-roundness in KS regulation, a number of lap joint welded connections, the real cost benefits of automatic welded connection should be much higher than those of manual welded connections.
This paper presents a laboratory experiment on data acquisition technique that applied to the gamma radiation scanning coupled with computed tomography (CT) technique for inspection of broken nozzle inside the vertical vessel. The acquisition technique was developed to inspect a large diameter vessel when suspicious problem location is not easily accessed. This technique allows the installation of gamma radiation source (Cesium 137, Cs-137), and detectors (Sodium Iodine. NaI(Tl)) from the accessible location to the required location and performs the scanning by designed pattern. To demonstrate the designed technique, top opened tank which installed with six cut steel pipes diameter of 76.2 mm (3") at a certain position was selected. They were assumed to be a gas riser pipes inside the vessel. Three studied cases were performed, (a) projection of well installed six pipes, (b) projection of one out of six broken pipe and (c) one of nozzle was assumed to be failure and fell down until one out of six pipes was broken and obstructed by nozzle. Results clearly indicated the capability of developed technique to distinguish between normal situation case and abnormal situation cases.
When pile foundation is constructed by dynamic method, it is desirable to perform monitoring of drivability with pile penetration. Dynamic pile monitoring yields information regarding driving hammer, cushion, pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. In this study, dynamic monitoring of the steel pipe pile was performed with Pile Driving Analyser (PDA). The PDA utilizes the wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables which describe the conditions of the hammer-pile-soil system in real-time and following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and estimation of pile bearing capacity. A series of PDA test were performed at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) located in southeast of Marado, a southernmost small island south of Jeju Island. The drilling core sediments of Ieodo subsoil are composed of mud and sand, showing lamination and wavy or lenticular bedding, which were often bioturbated. This paper summarizes the results of PDA tests which were applied in measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by steam hammer, Vulcan-560 and MRBS-4600, at the marine sediments.
In the conventional load transfer analysis for a steel pipe drilled shaft, it was assumed that the concrete's strain is the same as the measured steel's strain and the elastic modulus of the steel and the concrete calculated by the formular as prescribed by specification is used in the calculation of pile axial load. But, the pile axial load calculation by conventional method differed to some extent from the actual pile load. So, the behavior of a steel pipe drilled shaft could not be analyzed exactly. Thus, the necessity to measure the strain for each pile component was proposed. In this study, a new approach for load transfer measurement of large diameter drilled shafts was suggested ; the strain of each pile component(i. e., steel and concrete) was measured by DRS(Deformable Rod Sensor), the elastic modulus was determined by the uniaxial compression test for concrete specimens made at test site and a value of elastic modulus was evaluated as average tangential modulus corresponding to the stress level of the (0.2-0.6)$f_{ck}$. Field application was confirmed by the results of load transfer measurement tests for 3 drilled shafts. The errors for calculated pile head load were -11 ∼16% and 3.4% separately.
