  • Shape morphing is the process of transforming a source shape, through intermediate shapes, into a target shape. Two main problems to be considered in three dimensional shape morphing are vertex correspondence and path interpolation. In this paper, an approach which uses the linear interpolation of the Laplacian coordinates of the source and target meshes is introduced for the determination of more plausible path when two topologically identical shapes are morphed. When two shapes to be morphed are different in shape and topology, a new method which combines shape deformation theory based on Laplacian coordinate and mean value coordinate with distance field theory is proposed for the efficient treatment of vertex correspondence and path interpolation problems. The validity and effectiveness of the suggested method was demonstrated by using it to morph large and complex polygon models including male and female whole body models.

  • During an actual forming operation, a material may undergo considrably large changes in strain path, and these changes can significantly alter the forming limits. So, in this study, modified forming limit curves(FLCs) in complex strain path are determined with specially designed jig to give test specimens with desired prestrains in uniaxial or biaxial deformation mode. In another part of present study, theoretical prediction of FLCs is attempted with MK's theory and Hosford's yield criterion to give forming limit curves in positive minor strain region and with Hill's local necking theory in negative minor strain region. Comparison of these theoretical results with experimental ones will be mentioned for both linear and complex strain path.

  • The vibration of a curved pipe conveying fluid is studied when the pipe is clamped at both ends. To consider the nonlinearity, this study adopts the Lagrange strain theory for large deformation and the extensible dynamics based on the Euler-Bemoulli beam theory for slenderness assumption. By using the Hamilton principle, the non-linear partial differential equations are derived. To investigate the dynamic characteristics of the system the discretized equations of motion are derived from the Galerkin method. The natural frequencies varying with the flow velocity are computed. From these results, we should consider the nonlinearity to analyze dynamics of a curved pipe conveying fluid more precisely.

  • This paper introduces a new method to study the hydroelastic behavior of hinged Very Large Floating Structures (VLFSs). A hinged two-module structure is used to confirm the present approach. For each module, the hydroelasticity theory proposed by Lu et al. (2016) is adopted to consider the coupled effects of wave dynamics and structural deformation. The continuous condition at the connection position between two adjacent modules is also satisfied. Then the hydroelastic motion equation can be established and numerically solved to obtain the vertical displacement, force and bending moment of the hinged structure. The results calculated by the present new method are compared with those obtained using three-dimensional hydroelasticity theory (Fu et al., 2007), which shows rather good agreement.

  • The present study aims to investigate the ultimate strength and geometric nonlinear behavior of composite plates containing initial imperfection subjected to combined end-shortening strain and lateral pressure loading by using a semi-analytical method. In this study, the first order shear deformation plate theory is considered with the assumption of large deflections. Regarding in-plane boundary conditions, two adjacent edges of the laminates are completely held while the two others can move straightly. The formulations are based on the concept of the principle of minimum potential energy and Newton-Raphson technique is employed to solve the nonlinear set of algebraic equations. In addition, Hashin failure criteria are selected to predict the failures. Further, two distinct models are assumed to reduce the mechanical properties of the failure location, complete ply degradation model, and ply region degradation model. Degrading the material properties is assumed to be instantaneous. Finally, laminates having a wide range of thicknesses and initial geometric imperfections with different intensities of pressure load are analyzed and discuss how the ultimate strength of the plates changes.

  • Flexible composite propellers are subject to large deformation under heavy loading, and hence the hydrodynamic performance of deformed propeller might deviate from that of the metallic propeller under negligible deformation. To design the flexible propeller, it is therefore necessary to be able to evaluate the structural response of the blades to the hydrodynamic loadings, and then the influence of the blade deformation upon the hydrodynamic loadings. We use the lifting-surface-theory-based propeller analysis and design codes in solving the hydrodynamic problem, and the finite-element-method program formulated with 20-node iso-parametric solid elements for the analysis of the structural response. The two different hydrodynamic and structural programs are arranged to communicate through the carefully-designed interface scheme which leads to the derivation of the geometric parameters such as the pitch, the rake and the skew distributions common to both programs. The design of flexible propellers, suitable for manufacturing, is shown to perform the required thrust performance when deformed in operation. Sample design shows the fast iteration scheme and the robustness of the design procedure of the flexible propellers.

  • The stability of deep coal roadways with large sections and thick top coal is a typical challenge in many coal mines in China. The innovative Universal Discrete Element Code (UDEC) trigon block is adopted to create a numerical model based on a case study at the Dongtan coal mine in China to better understand the failure mechanism and stability control mechanism of this kind of roadway. The failure process of an unsupported roadway is simulated, and the results suggest that the deformation of the roof is more serious than that of the sides and floor, especially in the center of the roof. The radial stress that is released is more intense than the tangential stress, while a large zone of relaxation appears around the roadway. The failure process begins from partial failure at roadway corners, and then propagates deeper into the roof and sides, finally resulting in large deformation in the roadway. A combined support system is proposed to support roadways based on an analysis of the simulation results. The numerical simulation and field monitoring suggest that the availability of this support method is feasible both in theory and practice, which can provide helpful references for research on the failure mechanisms and scientific support designing of engineering in deep coal mines.

  • Nanotechnology has become one of the interesting technique used in material science and engineering. However, it is low used in civil engineering structures. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the static behavior of concrete plates reinforced with silica-nanoparticles. Due to agglomeration effect of silica-nanoparticles in concrete, Voigt's model is used for obtaining the equivalent nano-composite properties. Furthermore, the plate is simulated mathematically with higher order shear deformation theory. For a large use of this study, the concrete plate is assumed resting on a Pasternak elastic foundation, including a shear layer, and Winkler spring interconnected with a Kerr foundation. Using the principle of virtual work, the equilibrium equations are derived and by the mean of Hamilton's principle the energy equations are obtained. Finally, based on Navier's technique, closed-form solutions of simply supported plates have been obtained. Numerical results are presented considering the effect of different parameters such as volume percent of SiO2 nanoparticles, mechanical loads, geometrical parameters, soil medium, on the static behavior of the plate. The most findings of this work indicate that the use of an optimum amount of SiO2 nanoparticles on concretes increases better mechanical behavior. In addition, the elastic foundation has a significant impact on the bending of concrete slabs.

  • This paper deals with the nonlinear finite element analysis of fibre-reinforced plastic poles. Based on the principle of stationary potential energy and Novozhilov's derivations of nonlinear strains, the formulations for the geometric nonlinear analysis of general shells are derived. The formulations are applied to the fibre-reinforced plastic poles which are treated as conical shells. A semi-analytical finite element model based on the theory of shell of revolution is developed. Several aspects of the implementation of the geometric nonlinear analysis are discussed. Examples are presented to show the applicability of the nonlinear analysis to the post-buckling and large deformation of fibre-reinforced plastic poles.

  • Large deflection dynamic responses of laminated composite cylindrical shells under impact are analyzed by the geometrically nonlinear finite element method based on a generalized Sander's shell theory with the first order transverse shear deformation and the von-Karman large deflection assumption. A modified indentation law with inelastic indentation is employed for the contact force. The nonlinear finite element equations of motion of shell and an impactor along with the contact laws are solved numerically using Newmark's time marching integration scheme in conjunction with Akay type successive iteration in each step. The ply failure region of the laminated shell is estimated using the Tsai- Wu quadratic interaction criteria. Numerical results, including the contact force histories, deflections and strains are presented and compared with the ones by linear analysis. The effect of the radius of curvature on the composite shell behaviors is investigated and discussed.
