This paper compares the English language programs of two maritime institutes in very different parts of the world, South Korea and Belgium. It will show that although both institutes comply with the minimum standard set by the STCW Code issued by the IMO, requirements for entry and graduation can vary greatly. Method of class delivery, choice of learning tools and testing systems will also be examined to illustrate these differences. It will also shown that in order to train new seafarers in the best possible ways that will fulfill the IMO mandate of Safer Shipping and Cleaner Oceans, examination of course curriculum at any maritime institute should be an ongoing process so that cadets are encouraged to communicate in a targeted, efficient and professional way within a nautical context.

Pronunciation teaching is once again coming into the foreground of ELT. Japan is, however, lagging far behind many countries in the development of pronunciation curricula and in the actual speech performance of the Japanese learners of English. The reasons for this can be found in the prevalence of communicative methodologies unfavorable for pronunciation teaching, in the lack of trained professionals, and in the large numbers of students in Japanese foreign language classes. This paper offers a way to promote foreign language pronunciation teaching in Japan and other countries by means of employing computer and internet facilities. The paper outlines the major directions of using modem speech technologies in pronunciation classes, like EVF (electronic visual feedback) training at segmental and prosodic levels; automated error detection, testing, grading and fluency assessment. The author discusses the applicability of some specific software packages (CSLU, SUGIspeech, Multispeech, Wavesurfer, etc.) for the needs of pronunciation teaching. Finally, the author talks about the globalization of pronunciation education via internet resources, such as computer corpora and speech and pronunciation training related web pages.

Since Perlmutter (1978) proposed the Unaccusativity Hypothesis, the past two decades have seen a flourish of studies investigating the potential validity of unaccusativity in Korean. The central contentious issues have been whether unaccusativity can also be assumed in Korean, and, if so, what criteria could be proposed to discern the unaccusativity among various predicates. In this paper, several suggestions made theoretically and experimentally to address the semantic and/or syntactic distinction of the two types of Korean intransitive predicates are critically reviewed and evaluated from the standpoint that there is a close correlation between syntax and lexical semantics of intransitives. It is proposed, then, that the Korean unaccusativity can be reliably differentiated through the combined semantic criteria of [${\pm}$agentive] and [${\pm}$active]. In addition, case alternations in long form negation constructions are shown to be the most reliable and valid syntactic criteria for testing Korean unaccusatives.

Genomics & Informatics (NLM title abbreviation: Genomics Inform) is the official journal of the Korea Genome Organization. Text corpus for this journal annotated with various levels of linguistic information would be a valuable resource as the process of information extraction requires syntactic, semantic, and higher levels of natural language processing. In this study, we publish our new corpus called GNI Corpus version 1.0, extracted and annotated from full texts of Genomics & Informatics, with NLTK (Natural Language ToolKit)-based text mining script. The preliminary version of the corpus could be used as a training and testing set of a system that serves a variety of functions for future biomedical text mining.

Implementation of a process control language for a pager manufacturing is dealt in this paper. The pager manufacturing process is consisted of a tune and an exam part. In the tune part, three capacitor trimmers are tuned to optimize the state of the pager. In the exam part, message receiving status with the arbitrary calling is tested using a vision system. The program has the ability to reuse the address discarded in the exam part when the, pager testing is not working properly even though there exist the processing gaps between two processes. The system is composed of a personal computer(PC586) and TEM-cells, Flex pager testers, an oscilloscope, a camera, and actuators. Visual Basic running on the Windows 95 is used to implement the control software which has the GUI to make an operator convenient. The validity of applying the completed program to practical machines, which are developing in the KITECH, is shown by using the virtual machine.

중국어 학습에 대한 사회적 관심과 시장이 확대되고 스마트폰 어플리케이션을 기반으로 한 스마트러닝이 교육의 새로운 패러다임으로 자리 잡으면서 중국어 교육을 위한 어플리케이션의 연구와 개발도 활발해지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 스마트폰의 멀티미디어 구현 특성과 사용자 인터렉션 기능을 활용하여 기초적인 중국어 한자를 학습할 수 있는 '중국어 교육용 기능성 어플리케이션'을 설계하고 프로토타입을 구현하여 제시하였다. 중국어 한자 표현, 발음 청취, 음성 녹음 및 비교 청취, 관련 내용 학습, 테스트 등의 기능을 간편한 사용자 인터페이스로 구현하였다. 향후 연구에서는 중국어 회화에 적용될 수 있는 사용자 인터페이스와 학습자 개인별 평가 지수 등을 통해 추가적인 도구 없이도 효과적인 학습이 가능한 프로토타입을 개발할 것이다.

The purpose of the study was to explore ways to improve the test items on the Korean scholastic ability test. More specifically, the researchers investigated whether use of the target language in test items would make a difference in total scores, discriminatory power, and item difficulty. A total of 288 high school seniors participated in the study. The subjects were divided into the experimental group (N=145) and the control group (N=143). A 25-item test resembling the Korean scholastic ability test was administered to both groups. The experimental group was given items whose questions and alternatives were all presented in English, whereas the control group was given items whose questions and alternatives were presented in Korean only. Statistical analyses revealed that use of English vs. Korean in the questions and alternatives made a significant difference in total scores, item discrimination, and item difficulty level. The findings strongly suggest that use of English is one way to improve the quality of the Korean scholastic ability test by enhancing item discrimination and face validity. Considering that the test in question is a high-stakes exam in Korea, further research on how to improve the Korean scholastic ability test is urgently called for.

This study aims to suggest desirable directions through analyzing English test items of college entrance examinations(CEE) in Korea, China, and Japan. To achieve this, English test items of Scholastic Ability Test(SAT) in Korea were compared with those of CEE in China and Japan, and test items of TOEFL and IELTS. It was found that there were not many items for testing productive skills relatively to the tests of other countries including TOEFL and IELTS. Especially, there were integrated items for writing test in China. In case of speaking test, all the other country adopted direct ways like interview and oral test, not indirect test as in the SAT in Korea. It is suggested that there need to be included test items comprising long passages in order to measure extensive reading ability. It can be suggested that doze test be adopted for testing integrated proficiency of English.

재사용이 가능한 컴포넌트들을 사용하는 컴포넌트 기반 소프트웨어 개발 기술은 현재 소프트웨어 개발의 핵심 기술로써, 많은 소프트웨어들이 이 기법을 이용해 개발되고 있다. 컴포넌트 기반 스프트웨어를 보다 효율적으로 시험하기 위한 많은 노력이 있었으나, 아직까지 자동으로 시험을 쉽게 수행해 주는 도구는 별로 없으며 이미 개발된 도구들도 그 효용성이 미약하다. 본 논문에서는, 이전에 제안했던 컴포넌트 기반 소프트웨어 자동화 시험 도구인 CTM(Component Testing Manager)의 확장 내용으로써 XMI(XML Metadata Interchange) 형식으로 표현된 UML(Unified Modeling Language) 모델로부터의 시험 데이터 생성 및 수행기법에 대해 제시한다. 본 기법은 기존의 UML모델을 이용한 다른 시험기법과는 달리 표준화된 XML를 사용함으로써 XML모델링 도구와 독립적이고 분산환경에서 쉽게 사용할 수 있는 장점을 제공하여 보다 쉽게 컴포넌트 기 반 소프트웨어 의 시험을 가능하게 해 준다

Korea Electric Power Research Institute in charge of the power IT project "Development of Prototype for Advanced Substation Automation System based on the Digital Control Technology", is performing the verification of performance of the substation automation system. In order to verify a system based BUS protection IED, the standardized document and procedures are required. But there is nothing to describe systematically how to verify IEC 61850 based IED in the system environment except an individual IED testing way and report. This paper presents the substation automation system based ways and procedures to verify the IED using UML(Unified Modelling Language).
