Tribological Behavior of Mono- and Multilayer Coverings on Silicon Surface

  • Langmuir-Blodgett mono- and multilayer films from 2,4-heneicosanedione have been examined as lubrication coatings In the process of wear. Tribological properties of the films have been studied by atomic force microscopy and microtribometer. It has been observed that the wear resistance of silicon surface coated with OTS/LB multilayer system increased by several orders of magnitude compared to uncoated surfaces at low normal load. The results obtained suggest that the system constructed on silicon surface reduces surface energy, friction coefficient and increases life of substrate due to a possibility of LB film self-repairing during frictional contact.

  • Enhancing the electrical conductivity of the ultrathin organic films using Langmuir-Blodget technique is important step for the developement of molecular electronic device. The Octadecylviologen-TCNQ was synthesized with Octadecylviologen-Bromide an Lithium TCNQ Sine Octadecylviologen-TCNQ has two TCNQ snion radicals, the conductivity of LB film is expected to increase. The $\pi$-A isotherm showed that the limiting area was 150${\AA}$$\^$2/ molecule and the silid-like transition surface pressure was 25 mN/m. The electronic transition of the TNCNQ anion radical was observed at 400 nm. Intermolecular charge transfer absorption was observed at 600nm and 850~1050 nm which ay resulted from the TCNQ anion radical dimer formation. The electrical conductivity of the viologen -TCNQ LB film was 10$\^$-6/cm This values was 100 times higher than that of the quinolinium-TCNQ and pyridinium-TCNQ LB films.

  • A Stability to the dispersion solvent, which is acetonitrile, dichloromethane, benzene, chloroform and acetonitrile-benzene(1:1,v/v) of {N-docosyl pyridinium)-TCNQ(1:2)complex was investigated by U.V Spectrophotometer and was confirmed stabilized on acetonitrile, the dichloromethane and acetonitrile-benzene (1:1,v/v) for seven hours. Using $CdCl_2$buffer solution as subphase for LB films deposition, it was achived successively to fabricate the Y-type LB films of (N-docosyl pyridinium)-TCNQ(1:2)complex. For the sake of verifying the deposition of LB films, U.V is measured by variation of nominal layer number.

  • We fabricated an IMI-O polymer containing an imidazole group that could form a complex structure between the monolayer and the metal ions at the air-water interface. Also. the monolayer behavior at the air-water interface and the surface morphology of metal-complexed Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films were investigated by using Brewster angle microscopy(BAM) and Scanning Maxwell-stress Microscopy(SMM). The difference in the BAM and SMM images between the pure water and the aqueous metal ions is attributed to the interactions of the copolymers with the metal ions at the interface and the consequent change of the monolayer organization.

  • Ultra thin films of HDSM-CuPc(Tetra-3-hexadecylsulphamoylcopperphthalocya-nine) were formed on various substrates by Langmuir-Blodgett method, where HDSM-CuPc was synthesized by attaching long-chain alkylamine(hexa-decylamine) to CuPc. The reaction product was identified with FT- IR, UV-visible absorption spectroscopies, elemental analysis and thin layer chromatography. The formation of ultrathin films of HDSM-CuPc was confirmed by FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscpies.

  • The pressure-area isotherm of monolayer at the air-water interface were obtained and the LB films were fabricated onto a quartz slides and quartz crystal by conventional Langmuir-Blodggett(LB) method. The UV absorption spectra of Langmuir-Blodggett(LB) film on quartz slides and spectrum of monolayer formed on quartz crystal have been measured. The photoisomerization of the long-chain fatty avid containing azobenzene were obtained by the application of UV and visible light. The reversibility of photoisomerization were more clear difference when the number of C$\_$n/ increased. At the pressure-area isotherms, the value of surface pressure increment were decreased when the number of C$\_$n/ increased, A surface pressure of 20mN/m was obtained as a proper one for a film deposition. The photoisomerization at LB films were also obtained by application of UV and visible light. So the LB film of long-chain fatty acid containing azobenzene has possibility to being applies to functional molecular devices such as photomemory and light switching.

  • Dry etching characteristics of indium tin oxide films and etch selectivities over photoresist films were investigated using $Cl_2/HBr$ inductively coupled plasma. From a Langmuir probe diagnostic system, it was observed that while the plasma temperature was kept nearly constant in spite of the change of the HBr mixing ratio, the positive ion density decreases rapidly with increasing the mixing ratio. On the other hand, a quadrupole mass spectrometer showed that the neutral HBr and Br species increased. The etching mechanism in the $HBr/Cl_2$ plasma was analyzed.

  • Using polyimide Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films as a tunneling harrier, we fabricated Au/Polyimide/1-layer arachidic acid/Pb structure in order to investigate electron transport properties through a junction. It was found that 9-layer polyimide LB films function as a good tunneling harrier in a study of current-voltage(I-V) chararteristics. And several peaks originating in the vibrational modes of the constituent molecules of 1-layer arachidic acid LB films were clearly observed in d$^2$V/dI$^2$- V corves.

  • We have manufacture Copper-tetra-tert-butylphalocyanine (CuTBP)Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films, which is known be sensitive to NO$_2$ gab. A response of these films to the NO$_2$ gab was studied. A surface pleasure of 25mN/m was obtained as a proper one for a film deposition. A deposited film status was identified with Uv/visible absorption spectra, ellipsometry measurements, and current-voltage(I-Y) characteristics. The NO$_2$ gas response experiments under 200ppm conducentration show that there are increment of electrical conductivity by 12 times, 5 seconds of response time, and 5 seconds of response time, and 90 seconds of recovery time.

Characteristics of Ultra-thin Polymer Ferroelectric Films (초박막 폴리머 강유전체 박막의 특성)

  • The properties of ultra-thin two-dimensional (2D) organic ferroelectric Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] were investigated to find possible applicability in flexible and wearable electronics applications. In the C-V characteristics of the MFM capacitor of 2-monolayer of 5 nm films, a butterfly hysteresis curve due to the ferroelectricity of P(VDF-TrFE) was confirmed. Typical residual polarization value was measured at 2μC/㎠. When the MFM capacitor with ultra-thin ferroelectric film was measured by applying a 10 Hz bipolar pulse, it was shown that 65% of the initial polarization value in 105 cycles deteriorated the polarization. The leakage current density of the 2-monolayer film was maintained at about 5 × 10-8 A/㎠ for the case at a 5MV/cm electric field. The resistivity of the 2-monolayer film in the case at an electric field at 5 MV/cm was more than 2.35 × 1013 Ω·cm.
