This study saw developed to build a landscape monitoring methodology by simulation of landscape effect prediction. A Visual landscape planning and management system has been introduced and implemented by each ministry so as to solve the problems of visual landscape destruction due to recognition on the value of natural landscape of beautiful territory and various development projects. At present, this system emphasizes the importance of the visual and perceptual aspect of the landscape however, there is a lack of techniques required for comprehensively predicting, evaluating, and managing it. Furthermore, sustainable landscape management after the completion of development projects has been inadequately carried out, as the focus has been only on consultation in the planning process of the development project in institutional performance. The viewpoint for judging the change in the visual landscape of the development plan and development project should be selected as the effective point where the development project is expected to result in a remarkable landscape change. As for the method of selecting effective viewpoints, the main viewpoints are selected by analyzing the visible area of the target viewpoint. When selecting the viewpoint centered on the viewpoint target, it was judged that it is possible to reduce the procedure of selecting and checking the existing preliminary viewpoints and widening the effective visible range. The proposed visual landscape monitoring is expected to be able to solve the existing institutional problems, and to be used when the implementers and authors of the development projects review the effects on the landscape.
The purpose of this research is to analysis the application of the ISG(Index of Streetscape Greenness) in EIA through case study of Seoul. ISG is a new index which directly expresses human's perceptions of plants in a street and is defined as the area ratio of which leaves of plants occupy an eye-level view of a person standing on the center line of a street. In this research the 42 cases of 3 step reports such as plans, drafts, and final reports which had been passed through the EIA procedure of Seoul were analyzed. The results are as follows: In the drafts frequent mistakes or errors such as unsuitable picture composition, unsuitable sample points, inconsistency of the simulation result with the planting plan, and insufficient numbers of analysis were found, but almost of them were corrected in the final reports. In the most of final reports, the 30% of minimum requirement was satisfied. At all cases the changes of the ISG values were clearly positive. Finally the average current ISG was 19.6%, meanwhile the average proposed ISG was 35.4%. It was verified that the ISG is very practical index to promote green streetscape, but in order to guarantee an achievement a thorough investigation of reports are needed.
Forests are being seriously fragmented as a result of land development. Land development with disregard to its subsequent environmental impacts is a primary threat to biodiversity by incurring massive habitat losses and changes in structure and composition of forests. The purpose of this study was to develop the impact assessment model for quantitative distance or degree of disturbance by land developments. This study conducted a survey about structure and composition of forest species to determine degree of impact from land development. The edge effect of forest fragmentation on the number of bird species, population size, and bird diversity was obvious. In particular, the bird diversity sharply declines around the forest edge where intensive land development projects take place. To assess the disturbance of forest species, the factors selected were the bird diversity and the rate of edge species. The impact assessment model about bird diversity was explained by type of forest fragmentation and type of vegetation ($R^2$=0.23, p<0.005). The other model about edge species explained by a distance, type of forest fragmentation, type of vegetation, and width of road ($R^2$=0.34, p<0.001). In order to test the applicability of the model developed in this study, the models was applied to the Samsong housing development in Goyang-si, Gyunggi-do. The impacts of land development on the bird species were reasonably quantified to suggest effective mitigation measure. The impact assessment model developed in this study is useful to assess the magnitude of disturbance of bird species. Particularly, the model could be applied to the current Environmental Impact Assessment practices to predict and quantify the impacts of land developments projects on forest bird species.
Since 1990s many skyscrapers have been built in Seoul. However, gusty winds occur among tall buildings by descending turbulences due to the upper air blocking. This study aims to investigate the wind characteristics of skyscraper prevailing wind direction. In order to evaluate the building wind in this area, The wind speed and the wind direction were measured using propeller type RM-Young wind monitor in this study. The maximum wind speed was recorded by 15.1 m/sec and the main wind direction is WNW and NW. The ultimate purpose of this study is to figure out the phenomena of building wind impact and also to provide essential basic data for establishing proper guidelines in building wind impact assessment for skyscrapers in Korea.
The purpose of this study is to suggest visual resource management methods for the national parks and adjacent areas, where visual impacts by high rise buildings such as hotel, condominium, etc. become serious problems. In this study Soraksan National Park has been selected as a case study for landscape management planning. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Comprehensive landscape management planning for National Parks and adjacent areas is necessary to solve visual impact problems by high rise buldings such as hotel, condominium, etc. 2) It is suggested to investigate visual resources and conceptual landscape management ideas, to select landscape control points and lines, landscape management areas, and to prepare building height control plan for proper landscape management plan. 3) In case of Soraksan national park, the landscape management plan includes three landscape management areas : Landscape preservation area, General landscape management area, and special landscape management area. 4) In the part of special landscape management area, it is necessary to introduce landscape impact assessment system to more effective landscape management.
Landscape elements of historical and cultural value and elements that have negative impact on landscape due to reckless development teem in rural area. Due to this, local government has established a visual landscape plan. The purpose of this study is to analyze the process and content of domestic rural landscape planning process and to suggest improvements for it. For that, this study measure guideline of Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs against guideline of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. To analyze the landscape planning guideline of australia which is similar to domestic rural landscape planning process, and to compare both guidelines. The results of this study are as follow. The stage of landscape resource survey and assessment progressed systematically, but it was not practical because for the lack of survey and assessment method. Therefore, it should be suggested for the survey and assessment technique. The rural landscape plan, established in master planning stage, do not necessarily reflect local government's landscape management on the ground of abstract technic of landscape management. For this sake, to develop evaluation method for development of landscape element seems necessary.
Studies on landscape ecology have focused on conceptual aspects, while empirical focus for spatial planning has been rarely conducted. This study conducted an empirical analysis to enhance landscape ecological performance of urban developments using landscape ecology. To do so, concrete criteria and standards to analyze structural, functional and variational mechanisms of urban landscape ecology were developed. An integrated landscape ecology assessment model that can be applied to urban development planning was established by combining the criteria. Next, Landscape Ecological Management System (LEMS) was developed to implement an integrated assessment using GIS. To verify the effectiveness of the system, a case study was conducted using LEMS on Byulnae City in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. The LEMS can be useful for urban planners and policy makers in their selection of desirable planning alternatives. Moreover, the LEMS developed in this study can be a useful tool for academia in terms of the implementation of further related studies, and for planning professionals in their environmental impact assessment tasks.
This study tested the usefulness of landscape indices for quantifying forest fragmentation due to linear development projects. Research was carried out in the middle-upper Nakdong River watershed, which has been affected by the expressway building, or national road-widening. Landscape indices were calculated from the forest cover maps before and after road-building using FRAGSTATS 3.1. We could successfully demonstrate the forest fragmentation based on landscape indices; (1) patch size decreased, and edge density and patch density increased (2) roads simplified patch shapes, especially in the larger patches, (3) patch core area size decreased, and core area density increased, (4) the distance increased between the focal patch and each of the other patches within the search radius (=1km) as a result of roads. We suggest several important needs for future researches, including continued investigation of scaling issues, development of indices that measure specific components of spatial pattern, and study of the relationships between forest fragmentation and ecological processes.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the landscape changes at Su-ji and Gi-heung in Young-in city using FRAGSTATS Model. Landscape Indices obtained by this model can explain the structural change of urban green zone and fragmentation resulting from development. As results of this study, Gi-heung showed worse quality of landscape in 2007, comparing 2000. However, in Su-ji, there were several better landscape indices in the same 2007/2000 comparison, even though the little shrinking of green zone and separation of core area. It could assume that the reason was caused by conservation policy of urban green zone. This study could provide the useful methods for finding the problems and searching the alternatives considering the development of urban green zone.
The spatial range of EIA is mainly related to landscape ecological factors such as topography, geology, animals, and plants. Problems were detected involved land, soil, noise, oscillation, the atmosphere, animals, and plants in the natural-environment. First of all, the current EIA lacks explicit spatial ranges and sections in terms of scientific exactitude and objectivity for assessment. Secondly, there are overlapping influence-area problems resulting in cumulative impacts of unit developments that accumulate. Finally, some developments have no regard for ecological and conservational value in relation to determining which effect ecological stability, and which should be regarded as Regional Ecological Resources. Therefore, this study suggests that EIA should be improved in the following manner. First, the standard classification of landscape unit for analysis should be established 10 regulate each spatial range on a wide-landscape scale. Secondly, the impacts resulting from the interaction of overlapping influence-area developments between individual development should be assessed. Third, Minimization of the of the environmental effects is needed by applying the cumulative effects to the influence-area where developments occur in the same time or in a sequence. Fourth, individual characteristics of landscape elements such as roads, rivers, and green networks need to be considered separately in the analysis. Finally, regional ecological habitats should be included in the analysis in order to achieve stable ecosystems.
