  • The objective of this study is to analyze the propriety of the Biotope Area Factor's(BAF) application and propose an improvement plan. The BAP system, initially started by Seoul metropolitan city, is being settled in Korea. The BAF originated from the Biotop $Fl{\ddot{a}}chen$ Faktor(BFF) system of Berlin Germany. It was established as part of the Landscape Plan for the ecological function recovery in the high density built-up area with a sense of environmentally friendly urban management. The study compared the BAF's present condition of Ganddong-Gu, Seoul with Seoul's BAF system. Some problems appeared from the system application. Firstly, it may cause ecological damage if the site ranges are more than current BAF system limits. Secondly, the application of the current BAF system has the possibility of general redevelopment, but the partial improvement considering current standards of the high density built-up area's paving section is impossible. Lastly, division of the application object and application type are not divided well. In addition, the Seoul BAF which is currently applied across the board is based on the destruction of the natural area and low density built-up area. Accordingly, to improve these problems requires a complementary system protecting the ecological function prior to the application of the BAF and with restricted application to high density of BAF system built-up area.

  • In this study, it provides the diagnostic index for the rural landscape formation. For the development of diagnostic index, this study first analyzed documents and papers on the landscape formation. Landscape types are also classified by their function and then landscape index was developed by AHP method. Classification system was categorized as three steps: 2 items for 1st step, 10 items for 2nd step, and 20 items(criteria) for 3rd step. In the survey of weighting values with AHP method, the analysis result for the first step showed that rural village landscape is more important than landscape around the village by approximately 20%. In the second step, residence is rated as the most important, followed by village tree planting, and then farmland around the rural villages, greenery, and water environment. In the third step, the feng shui is rated as the most important, followed by tree planting, village forest, culture, and history. While vehicle maintenance, village alleys and pedestrian facilities are rated lower. In index of the around the village, weighting value for index of the farm land and skyline has the highest value. While species richness, water quality and water resources were rated relatively low. In the future, the rural landscapes diagnosis index will be applied to measure the level of the rural villages landscapes and it is expected to propose political support for the landscapes formation.

The results of summary are as follows. 1) First of all, as a result of landscape character analysis of edge stripe in cultivated land in total of 7 case areas, for example, the edge stripe in cultivated land in case area 4 and 8 maintain the width of 10m and are assessed satisfactory in terms of vegetation development condition, appearance of living species, connectivity, buffer capacity and so on. Also, as a result of structural character of correlation analysis among items, the correlation coefficient between width and appearance of living species showed 0.941, the highest. Following are connectivity and appearance of living species and width and buffer capacity respectively: 0.841 and 0.740. 2) As a result of landscape character analysis of uncultivated stripe in total of 6 case areas, it is analyzed that case area 4 maintains the widest width as almost 4.5m average width and considered valuable as I degree in vegetation development condition, filtering, and connectivity. 3) As a result of problem analysis of uncultivated stripe, for example, case 3, 9, and 10 was analyzed that the width was below 1.25m which is too small to carry out the function of buffer and habitat for living creature, so minimum standard width was set between 4~5m through comprehensive analysis of character of each case area. Based on the result above landscape character, value and problem analysis, main improvement guidelines are set in terms of width, connectivity, filtering, and vegetation development, restrictive practices and so on.

  • Cultural-historical places, due to their strong symbolic sense of place shared in various people, have important impacts on people's cognitive and emotional reactions. Especially, the visual characteristics of surrounding areas of cultural -historical places directly influence the way the places are perceived, because they function as a visual background of the places. This study examined how the visual characteristics of surrounding landscape of cultural-historical places nfluenced the perception of the places. The visual characteristics of the surrounding landscape was minipulated by a computer simulation in the two aspects; quality and scale. The quality of the simulated landscape was divided by two kinds : natural and artificial . The scale of the simulated landscape was classified by three kinds : 1/3 of the middle ground, 2/3, and 3/3. Specifically, in each photo simulation, simulated natural or artificial background was introduced up to 1/3, 2/3 or the full height of historic monument. After a computer simulation, people's cognitive and emotional reactions to the simulated slides were investigated. The results showed that the quality of surrounding landscape have a great impact on all the cognitive and emotional reactions investigated. On the vontrary, the scale of surrounding landscape was found to habve an impact on partial reactions, such as all the emotions, part of the cognitions, and visiting preference only. The results revealed that the visual characteristics of surrounding landscape should be considered as the crucial elements in planning of cultural-historical places. Based on the study results, several suggestions were made for the landscape planning and conservation for cultural-historical places and historic cities.
