  • Waste landfill consists of cover layer, glass, robber, sheet, food waste, etc and is in very loose state. So, the proper method must be applied to ground improvement of waste landfill according to its characteristics and conditions. In this paper, analysis for field tests as static loading test, bearing capacity test were peformed. In result, PG pile method proved to be effective and economic, because it affected increase of end bearing capacity, the prevention of differential settlement and over 20% increase of density by expansion of pile.

  • This study presents a numerical method for calculating gas flow around a sanitary landfill gas vent, when gas flows by pressure. The method described is a three-dimensional compartmental model and includes methods to determine the dimensions for the model. Using the numerical method, controll of press and gases flowing out to the air through final cover soil, and degine of sanitary landfill gas vents.

  • To utilize a closed municipal solid waste landfill site in environmentally secure conditions, it is necessary to verify the stabilization level of landfill leachate. To assess leachate stabilization of an open-dumping municipal solid waste landfill (Noeun Landfill) which is located at the upper drainage basin of Namhan River which flows into Lake Paldang utilized for Seoul Metropolitan water supplies, the surrounding characteristics of the landfill site was surveyed. After then, leachate, groundwater and soil samples from this landfill were chemically analyzed, and the analysis results were evaluated by "The Criteria of Landfill Waste Stabilization(CLWS)", "Discharge Criteria of Landfill Leachate", "The Criteria of Domestic Use in Groundwater Quality", and "Soil Contamination Criteria" promulgated by Korean Ministry of Environment. The closed open-dumping landfill was equipped with the final soil cover, 3 groundwater monitoring wells and poor landfill gas extraction devices for the post-closure management of the landfill. BOD/CODcr ratios in leachate were less than or slightly higher than 1/10. This results seemed to imply that the leachate stabilization level of this landfill based on the CLWS was almost completed. Qualities of groundwater sampled from monitoring wells located at outside of landfill were adequate for "The Criteria of Domestic Use in Groundwater Quality". Finally, concentrations of soil contaminants that were likely to be influenced by this landfill site were adequate to "Soil Contamination Criteria".

  • This study is objected to estimate the variation of the coefficient of leachate according to designs in landfill cover systems. Design (a) is the unsanitary landfill cover system with 50 cm soil. But Design (b), (c) are sanitary cover systems which are composed of soil top layer, drainage layer, barrier liner(Design (b): Geomembrane(1.5 mm) and compacted clay liner(30 cm), Design (c) compacted clay liner(45 cm)), gas venting layer. Quantity of leachate estimates Rational Method generally and depend on the coefficient of leachate, on one of the factors in Rational Method largely. The coefficient of leachate is defined as the leachate production ratio result from incident precipitation. To estimate the variation of the coefficient of leachate, the authors use HELP(Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance) Simulation and Pilot Test. As a result of HELP Simulation, the coefficient of leachate is 0.36∼0.42 in Design (a) and 0.03∼0.15 in Design (b), (c) according to designs in landfill cover systems and quality of barrier liner placement. These numerical values are similar to 0.13 with the coefficient of leachate in Pilot Test.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the Physicochemical characteristics of mined waste(separated waste and soil) and to predict environmental effect of an old landfill site located at north of Seoul. Municipal solid waster(MSW) had been disposed of at the old landfill site used in this study for about 2 years(1990-1992). The old landfill site selected for this study had accepted mainly municipal solid waste. The landfill-mined waste contained separated waste (40.9%) and soil(59.1%) by wet weight basis. The separated waste consisted of combustible(91.0%) and non-combustible(9.0%). The combustible waste was mainly non-biodegradable plastics. The low heating value of the separated combustible waste, which is calculated by Dulong's equation, was as high as 3,470kcal/kg. According to the Korean Extraction Procedure, separated waste and soil were proved to be not hazardous. The total content of heavy metal in the separated waste and soil met standard of California State, USA. Therefore the separated waste may be relandfilled at a sanitary landfill site and/or burned up at an incinerator, and the separated old soil may be used ad landfill cover-soil at a sanitary landfill site. Water quality of two streams was grade IV, of which water could be used as industrial and agricultural water. The streams near the landfill site might not be contaminated by leachate from the old landfill site. It was estimated that organic matter in the old landfill site would not be actively biodegraded within a short period of time.

  • In the case of domestic general waste landfills, cumulated leachate level is often formed in the landfill due to the waste of high moisture content and it becomes important to characterize the hydraulic properties of the disposed waste. Although many hydrologic studies have been peformed for leachate barriers and pheriperal subsurface environments, few studies have been done to investigate the hydraulic property of the disposed waste and cover soils and to analyse the leachate flow behavior within landfills. In this paper, the geotechnical properties of the waste and buried cover soils are identified through the field experiment including pumping and slug tests. The results of various tests show that the field density of the cover soils is somewhat higher than the maximum laboratory density of cover soils and the vertical flow of leachate and gas in the landfill is prevented by the buried cover soils. The hydraulic conductivities of field pumping test and slug tests are well matched and stayed in the range of hydraulic conductivities of well compacted wastes in the literature.

  • The one of the most important concerns in the design of the final cover system is to restrict percolation of water into the waste body. To minimize entering the water, the final cover system has the barrier layer that consists of a single compacted clay liner(CCL) or a composite liner with high density polyethylene(HDPE) overlying CCL. The HDPE as well as CCL can be damaged by landfill settlements. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the effects of HDPE induced by settlements in the final cover system after closure. The results of the three test that is field test, lysimeter test in laboratory, and prediction of settlement represent that the HDPE in the final cover system is not pretty much affected by settlements and stable on settlements.

  • In order to investigate the applicability and suitability of the coal ash (bottom ash) to landfill final cover, field pilot-scale lysimeter experiments were carried out. The mixture of loamy soil, bottom ash, and construction waste was placed as a cover material in lysimeter ($2m{\times}6m{\times}1.2m$) which were constructed with cement brick, and then volumetric water contents, pF value, and the quantity of runoff and seepage of treatment boxes filled with the mixture of loamy soil and the industrial by-products were monitored from July, 2007 to february, 2008. Among the cases tested, consequently, the case containing the mixture of bottom ash and loamy soil was most effective in plant growth and water retention ability.

  • Sudokwon landfill("Sudokwon" means regions of Seoul, Kyunggi and Incheon metropolitan cities in Korea), the world's largest sanitary landfill, has been systematically managing statistics on the incoming and dumping wastes and satisfactorily controlling pollutants including leachate and LFG. According to our long time experience of LFG field monitoring, the emission of GHG from landfill estimated by the IPCC Guideline showed much difference with our results. C&D waste has high concentration of sulfate compared to other wastes. Increased C&D waste of dumping waste had changed the COD/sulfate ratio in the landfill, which caused the increase of H2S gas and the decrease of CH4 gas. But the IPCC estimation method does not consider the effects of sulfate. In addition to that, the oxidation factor of the cover soil is set to the default values of 0.1 but the measured values by the field monitoring, are showing much higher than that, especially in the closed landfill.
