  • The changes of rural landscape are currently spread everywhere and are rapidily being processed both in quality and in quantities of changes From such aspects, it is urgent to control the land scape change, and is required to know what is valued or preferred in rural landscape, This study was conducted to investigate preferences and differences of the responses between urban and rural residents to rural scenery. As a method, color-slide surrogates for rural landscape settings are shown to urban and rural residents, For a given 52 scenes of rural landscapes the respondents judged the familiarity, orality, and preference along a ten point scale. The following facts are found: 1) Refponses to certain types of landscape settings are influenced by the place of residence of the respondents. The urban residents highly rated natural components of the rural landscape. In contrast rural residents preferred the scenes with visible sign of development 2) The relations among the estimation of preference, familiarity and rurality in rural landscape were deeply correlated. When the rural lands(:ape is adequately ref resented as 'familiarity' or 'rurality' well the landscape is more preferred 3) It is found what is valued or preferred in rural landscape : Readjusted agricultural land, big tree, grassland hi dominated visually were preferred in rural landscape. The implication of this study is that successful planning of development or management in rural area will occur only when these different needs and values are acknowledged and accommodated.

  • A Land slide in Granitic Gneiss weathered soil was stabilized successfully with soil nailing using 929mm steel bar. To understand the behavior of load transfer between soil and nail, in-situ pdl-out tests were carried out. The strains of steel bars were measured using strain gauges during pull-out tests. Forces-strain data from laboratory tension tests on steel bar and grouted steel bar were examined to compare with those of the pull-out tests. Comparisons were made between the pull-out test results and laboratory test result to understand load transfer mechanism.

  • In lateral ground flow, slope stability, and land slide problems, H-piles have been often used for a horizontally deforming ground to prevent the failure of mass of soil in a downward and outward movement of a slope. Here, Theoretical equations are derived to estimate the lateral force, assuming that the Mohr-coulomb's Plastic states occures in the ground just around H-piles. In this study, the mechanism of lateral force acting on passive pile that is in a row, situated in the ground undergoing plastic deformation was discussed, and its theoretical analysis was carried out considering the interval between H-piles. The solution of the theoretical equation derived from here showed resonable characteristic for constants of soil as well as for the interval, widths, and heights of H-pile.

  • Recently, the terrestrial laser scanner is considered as useful measurement equipment for acquiring a three-dimensional data. In this study, a terrestrial laser scanner which has +/- 2.5cm accuracy is examined whether the terrestrial laser scanner is reliable to present the tendency of landslide movement. The test area is covered by protection blocks, and they are being moved by landslide movement. Landslide movement was detected by measuring the movement of protection blocks. Totally three scenes of test area were acquired during 2004 and 2006. The three scenes of the protection blocks were registered in global coordinate system, then the landslide movement was investigated. The landslide movement detected in the three scenes was evaluated by comparing with landslide movement measured by a total station. Although the measurement accuracy of landslide using the terrestrial laser scanner was worse than the total station, the scanning data showed the tendency of landslide movement of the test area.

  • In lateral ground flow, slope stability, and land slide problems, H-piles have often been used, on a horizontally deforming ground, to prevent the failure of mass of soil in a downward and outward movement of a slope. Here, theoretical equations are derived to estimate the lateral force, assuming that the Mohr-Coulomb's plastic states occur in the ground, just around H-piles. In this study, some model experiments were performed to check the lateral forces determined from theoretical equations, using several pile widths, heights and various interval ratios between H-piles for sand specimens. The solution of the theoretical equation, derived from previous studies, showed reasonable characteristics for constants of soil, as well as for the interval, widths, and heights of H-Pile.

  • A long wave induced by a Gaussian-shape submarine landslide is simulated by a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT). The NWT is based on the boundary element method and the mixed Eulerian/Lagrangian approach. Using the NWT, physical characteristics of land-slide tsunami, including wave generation, propagation, particle kinematics, hydrodynamic pressure, run-up and depression, are simulated for the early stage of long wave generation and propagation. Various sliding mass heights are applied to the developed model for a systematic sensitivity analysis. In particular, the fully nonlinear NWT results are compared with linear results (exact body-boundary conditions with linear free-surface conditions) to identify the nonlinear effects in the respective cases.

  • This paper introduces a real time inspecting and monitoring system by using wireless communication and image processing technique. The communication system is developed by using 80c196kc microprocessor and it has data acquisition function for several kinds of sensors such as pluviometer, temperature, tension meter, elinometer and so on. The image processing method adopts Lalacian of Gaussian operator and least square method to extract line features for the captured images and uses a relaxation matching algorithm based in global structure constraint satisfaction to distinguish the matching error for those features. When the algorithm is processed, motion parameters of displacement area and its direction are computed. Once movement is recognized ...

  • The purpose of this study is to develop landslide susceptibility analysis techniques using artificial neural network and apply the newly developed techniques for assessment of landslide susceptibility to study areas, Yongin. Landslide locations detected from interpretation of aerial photo and field survey, and topographic, soil and geological maps of the Yongin area were collected. The data of the locations of land-slide, slope, soil texture, topography and lithology were constructed into spatial database using GIS. Using the factors, landslide susceptibility was analyzed by artificial neural network methods. The results of the analysis were verified using the landslide location data. The validation results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and landslide location data.

  • Debris flows are a natural hazard which looks like a combination of flood, land and rock slide. Large rainfall in July 2006 produced several large scale debris flows and many small debris flows that resulted in loss of life and considerable property and highway damage, as was widely reported in the national media. The hazard "debris flow" is still insufficiently researched Furthermore debris flows are very hard to predict. In this paper, a general over view of the debris flow problems along the highway, a generic way for the design and dimensioning of flexible barrier systems will be presented. A brief description of the various unique barrier types will be provided, too. The future for these barrier concepts looks promising because these barriers represent the state of art for such applications and are superior to many other available options.
