  • This study presents development of a automatic design software for process and die design of hot extrusion of aluminium alloys through square dies. The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than a science with increasing complexity of shape and thinness of section. Therefore, most of the die design is still dependent on personal judgement, intuition and experience. The objective of this study is to develop a software system which includes a design rule extracted from literatures and experts in the extrusion industry. The developed system is effectively used to design extrusion processes and dies with reduced lead time and trial extrusion.

  • Three-dimensional flow over the sand dunes have been studied numerically by using Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) method. In the direction of initial flow and span direction cyclic boundary conditions are imposed for velocity and pressure. The movement of the sand dune which is formed by converging wind direction has been investigated. The numerical method employed in this study can be divided into three parts: (i) calculation of the air flow over the sand dune using standard MAC method with a generalized coordinate system; (ii) estimation of the sand transfer caused by the flow through the friction; (iii) determination of the shape of the sand surface. Since the computational area has been changed due to step (iii), (i)-(iii) are repeated. The simulated dune, which has initially elliptic cross section, extends at the converging direction, which is known as linear dunes.

  • In the present study, several design parameters of the flat-die extrusion process are investigated using the rigid-plastic finite element method. The effect of loaction of extrusion profile, arrangement of multiple extrusion profiles, and design of various die land has been investigated through the analysis. Several numerical examples of flat-die extrusion, such as C-section, multiple U- shape, and window guide extrusion, are analyzed. From the comparative study, the effect of design parameters is investigated. In each example, comparing the velocity distribution with that of the original design, it has been shown that the design modification affords much more uniform distribution of axial velocity

  • This study is to trace the change of stream shape using the past series of aerial photographs and compare the land use changes of inland along the stream. For the Gyeong-an national stream, aerial photographs of 1966, 1981 and 2000 was selected and ortho photograph was made with RMSE of 1.25, 0.54, 0.72 pixels, respectively. As apparent changes of the stream, the consolidated reaches of stream with levee construction were straightened and their stream width widened. Especially the stream width of inlet part of Paldang lake was widened almost twice because of the rise of water level by dam construction in 1974.

  • The purpose of this study was to ascertain the ecological state and problems of eco-bridges on Korean roads. The study was conducted from March to April 2007 by checking ecological factors and wildlife around the eco-bridges and habitats. 8 representative eco-bridges were selected by their bridge shape and condition of location. After field survey, we analyzed ideal trails for wildlife using field data, digital topology maps, satellite images, and land use map. In addition to trail analysis, we identified the propriety of the eco-bridges through Population Viability Analysis. Because of unsuitable location and management, we found that most of the bridges are not proper for wildlife dispersal. Moreover, in some habitats, we could expect that some local populations might be extinct without appropriate treatments.

  • Retaining wall is a structure to stabilize the land slope as vertical retaining wall have constructed to make efficiency use of downtown area. Recently to commune with nature and refine a apartment and structure, natural friendly relations for retaining walls are tried to construct. The surface of the concrete walls are weave in various figures and colours, and in some places plant a shrub. Laying a landscape stone which have disclose a plane nature one means keeping up the natural slope, constructively safely set a anchor in front side and rear side wall between the natural stone, plant shrub or ground coverings to give shape into a rock. Natural stone is exposed of surface and planting the gardening, to be a type of natural friendly relations however that will be recycled. The size of blasted nature stone which is irregular become more natural type of one.

  • The urban form of Korean cities significantly changed in the late Chosun dynasty. The influence of commercial development was the main cause of these changes. Commerce became a important function of existing cities, and the new type of commercial towns emerged at the important spots of traffic routes. In both cases streets became dominant element of urban form. Mainly commercial buildings aggregated along the streets, and to obtain higher land use intensity shape of lots became narrow and deep. Koyang(高陽) shows the most significant example of this new type of lot and lot pattern. Approximately 30 narrow and deep type of lots lined on each side of street forming about 390 meters long linear commercial town. Similar examples were found at the outside of south gate of Suwon(水原), Nuwon(樓院), and Pangyo(板橋).

  • Internal spline forming using a thin and long tube can cause the buckling and folding during the forming process. In the study, we proposed two different extrusion processes, and we performed the analysis in order to obtain the optimal process according to the length of land part. Using the rigid-plastic finite element simulation, the proposed processes have been compared by checking the deformed shape and stroke-road relation.

  • A long wave induced by a Gaussian-shape submarine landslide is simulated by a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT). The NWT is based on the boundary element method and the mixed Eulerian/Lagrangian approach. Using the NWT, physical characteristics of land-slide tsunami, including wave generation, propagation, particle kinematics, hydrodynamic pressure, run-up and depression, are simulated for the early stage of long wave generation and propagation. Various sliding mass heights are applied to the developed model for a systematic sensitivity analysis. In particular, the fully nonlinear NWT results are compared with linear results (exact body-boundary conditions with linear free-surface conditions) to identify the nonlinear effects in the respective cases.
