  • Currently, road lightings are installed with less than 400W of existing metal halide lamps. These road lightings are being replaced by energy-saving lightings. Induction lamps are expected to be more actively replaced with targets for tunnel lighting and high ceiling lighting. Therefore, it is necessary to develop high efficiency, high power induction lamps system. In this study, the gas type & pressure, amalgam type were designed for the high power of the induction lamps. And induction lamp system was optimized through electrical, optical characteristics analysis. It is optimized to the gas pressure 300~350 [mmHg] for the discharge tube of high power induction lamp and ferrite core. The driving circuit matching was completed with a induction lamp using indium amalgam. The rated power consumption of the induction lamp was optimized with 250 W (rated ${\pm}10%$)

  • In this paper, proposed a new lighting control system which can reduce power consumption compared to conventional street lamps and intelligently control the light efficiently depending on whether there is a vehicle on the street. The new lighting control system proposed by this paper detects the presence of cars by collecting and analyzing sounds generated by the movement of cars. Then, the system controls lighting of street lamps based on the above car detection information, and turns on the street lamps sequentially by transmitting the car detection information. Experimental results showed that lightings were controlled based on the presence of cars and that operations of the lamps were made by turning on the lights sequentially by determining the moving direction of cars. This system is considered a technology that can reduce energies by applying to local roads with a few cars moving or national highways where lights are always turned on with low energy efficiency.

  • In this paper, we propose an indoor RSSI (received signal strength indication)-based localization method that uses virtually overlapped visible light with an indoor LED lighting system. In our system, a photodiode (PD) measures the RSSI from LED lamps that blink in one row or column units. Subsequently, the RSSI is used to obtain the horizontal distances between the LED lamps and the receiver with the predetermined characteristics curve, R-D curve, that represents the relation between the RSSI and the horizontal distances. When the controlled LED lamps blink in one row or column units, the R-D curve at the border of the LED lamps is different because of the weak lighting, which results in the position sensing error of the receiver. The deviation of the optical power of each LED also causes the error. To solve these problems, we propose a method that overlaps the visible light through the numerical operation at the receiver side without any modification of the light source side. Our proposed method has been simulated in a room measuring $1.2{\times}1.2{\times}1.8m^3$ considering the effect of the error on the optical power of the LED. The simulation result shows that the proposed method eliminates the error condition with the R-D curve and achieves an average positioning error of 13.4 mm under the error rate 3% of the optical power.

  • In recent, there have been several developments in lamp technology that promise savings in electrical power consumption and improved quality of the lighting space. Above all, the advantage of ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp is the removal of internal electrodes and heating filaments that are a light-limiting factor of conventional fluorescent lamps. The ring-shaped electrodeless lamp is intended as a high efficiency replacement for the incandescent reflector lamp in many applications. Therefore, the life time of ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamps is substantially higher than that of conventional fluorescent lamps and last up to 60,000 hours. In this paper, maxwell 3D finite element analysis program(Ansoft) was used to obtain electromagnetic properties associated with the coil and nearby structures. The electromagnetic emitting properties were presented by 3D simulation software operated at 250 KHz and some specific conditions. The optical characteristics were measured luminance and a temperature and an optical spectrum distribution for 10 min in a one minute interval at the same time. With a goal of finding alternative materials, we show measurement results of electrical characteristics of a ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp as a function of frequency and the number of coil turns using a highly permeable($\mu$$_{r}$(equation omitted) 2,000) Mn-Zn ferrite. These results are compared with those of conventional ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp. It is found that the resistance, inductance and impedance are increased while the quality factor decreases as frequency increases.s.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of artificial lighting sources on vegetative growth of Phalaenopsis and Doritaenopsis (an intergeneric hybrid of Doritis and Phalaenopsis) orchids. One - month - old plants were cultivated under fluorescent lamps, cool - white light - emitting diodes (LEDs), or warm - white LEDs at 80 and $160{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. The blue (400 - 500 nm) : green (500 - 600 nm) : red (600 - 700 nm) : far - red (700 - 800 nm) ratios of the fluorescent lamps, cool-white LEDs, and warm-white LEDs were 1 : 1.3 : 0.8 : 0.1, 1 : 1.3 : 0.6 : 0.1, and 1 : 2.7 : 2.3 : 0.4, respectively. Each light treatment was maintained for 16 weeks in a closed plant-production system maintained at $28^{\circ}C$ with a 12 h photoperiod. The longest leaf span, as well as the leaf length and width of the uppermost mature leaf, were observed in plants treated with warm-white LEDs. Plants grown under fluorescent lamps had longer and wider leaves with a greater leaf span than plants grown under cool-white LEDs, while the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II was higher under cool-white LEDs. The vegetative responses affected by different lighting sources were similar at both 80 and $160{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Leaf span and root biomass were increased by the higher light intensity in both cultivars, while the relative chlorophyll content was decreased. These results indicate that relatively high intensity light can promote vegetative growth of young Phalaenopsis plants, and that warm - white LEDs, which contain a high red-light ratio, are a better lighting source for the growth of these plants than the cool-white LEDs or fluorescent lamps. These results could therefore be useful in the selection of artificial lighting to maximize vegetative growth of Phalaenopsis plants in a closed plant - production system.

  • Purpose: Heat therapy by heat lamp after microvascular surgery is being used for preventing blood vessels's contraction and blood-flow's disturbance. As usually, incandescent lamp has been used. But there have been several problems and need for improvement in the existing heat lamp treatment. So we would like to introduce improved heat lamp to keep an appropriate temperature and intensity of illumination. Methods: The existing heat lamps are the ones of general light stands covered with newspaper, having 60 watt light bulb of incandescence and lampshade made of aluminum. We have tried to improve shortcomings of the existing heat lamps by enlarging the size of aluminum lampshade and attaching a curtain that can block heat and light. We conducted a comparative study between the existing and improved heat lamps. Under the assumption that there are several affected parts, we have also measured the distance from heat lamp to patients' eye region and then intensity of illumination. Result: The target temperature of surface was realized in 11 minutes with the maximum temperature reaching at 36.6 degrees C in 28 minutes at the existing heat lamp while the target temperature reached in 7 minutes with the maximum temperature reaching at 39.0 degrees C in 17 minutes at the improved heat lamp. The existing and improved heat lamp showed 38 lx and 0.1 lx of intensity of lumination, respectively. Conclusion: Using improved heat lamps, we can keep an appropriate temperature and we think we can make contribution to patients' treatment by making them and their neighbors able to sleep with minimized disturbance thanks to low intensity of illumination secured by blocking light.

  • A fishing lamp is the instrument for attracting distributed fish to a certain place, and is the lighting system mainly used in fishery. In the inshore fishing, most fishing lamps are used for squid and hairtail jigging fishing, and the light source of the fishing lamps mainly used is metal halide with 1.5 KW in electric power consumption. We will analyze the irradiance distribution according to depth because squid is attracted towards light. To analyze irradiance distribution by such fishing lamps, data for seawater Type-II among the seawater types defined in 1976 are applied to East Sea. However, the Type-II data have limitations in analyzing precise seawater transmission characteristics, due to insufficient information on deep seawater. This paper analyzed the irradiance distribution of fishing lamps using the measurement of transmission characteristics in the seawater in East Sea up to 100 m underwater instead of Type-II data, which is not sufficient for transmission. A compensation factor was drawn between the actual measurement data and Type-II data through seawater transmission characteristics simulation.
