  • This paper proposes an effective drive of high intensity discharge (HID) lamp ballast for cars. All control functions of the proposed ballast are implemented using a low-cost single chip microcontroller, PIC16C73 to optimize the total system size and to minimize cost through minimization of total component number. The proposed ballast generates high open-circuit voltage to ignite the lamp and is controlled to supply effectively the power required to shorten warm-up period after the breakdown. The DC-DC converter of the DC-AC converter part of the ballast utilizes the flyback converter topology that can minimize component number. Also, because to more minimize the ballast size, the transformer size must be minimized, for this, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) pulses are generated with high frequency using the PWM module of the microcontroller. An analysis for this is explained, briefly. As if the operation of the lamp and ballast arrives at steady-state, then the ballast must AC-control the lamp, for this, the microcontroller utilizes the other PWM module. And the part related to the igniter is explained, briefly. It is shown through experimental results that the controller of the proposed ballast has good performance for the HID lamp for cars.

  • To detect Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni, a loopmediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) detection method were developed. The LAMP assay was designed to test crude plant tissue without pre-extraction, or heating incubation, and without advanced analysis equipment. The LAMP primers were designed by targeting an ABC transporter ATP-binding protein, this primer set was tested using the genomic DNA of Xanthomonas and non-Xanthomonas strains, and a ladder product was generated from the genomic DNA of X. arboricola pv. pruni strain but not from 12 other Xanthomonas species strains and 6 strains of other genera. The LAMP conditions were checked with the healthy leaves of 31 peach varieties, and no reaction was detected using either the peach leaves or the peach DNA as a template. Furthermore, the high diagnostic accuracy of the LAMP method was confirmed with 13 X. arboricola pv. pruni strains isolated from various regions in Korea, with all samples exhibiting a positive reaction in LAMP assays. In particular, the LAMP method successfully detected the pathogen in diseased peach leaves and fruit in the field, and the LAMP conditions were proven to be a reliable diagnostic method for the specific detection and identification of X. arboricola pv. pruni in peach orchards.

  • At present, the cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) using mercury lamp has been generally used far liquid crystal backlight source of personal computer and car navigation and so on. This kind of lamp is more excellent on luminance performance and cost. However, the requirements of liquid crystal backlight due to a light source without mercury have been strongly increased from a viewpoint of the actual influence on environmental preservation and environmental recycling. As fluorescent lamp without mercury, Dielectric Barrier Discharge based rare gas fluorescent lamp (DBD-FL) using xenon (Xe) gas has been studied so far. This DBD lamp has no influence on the human body and environmental recycle. Its operating life is long because electrode is out. In this paper, the simulation and experimental results of soft switching high frequency inverter with reverse blocking single switch as a high frequency power supply circuit for DBD-FL using Xe gas are comparatively evaluated and discussed from a practical point of view.

  • Recently, 2-dimensional flat light sources have been attracting much attention for its use in LCD backlight applications because of its high luminous efficiency and uniformity. A long-gap discharge, mercury-tree flat fluorescent lamp has been developed, which shows a high brightness ($>5000\;cd/m^2$) and high luminous efficacy (60 lm/W). Additionally, it has a wide operating margin and stable driving condition with the aid of an auxiliary electrode. For driving the lamp, a narrow pulse power to maintain the glow discharge state is required. Since there has been no research for this kind of lamp driving, this paper proposes a newly developed short-pulse, high-voltage lamp-driving scheme. The proposed lamp system uses a ballast with a coupled-inductor in order to raise the short pulse voltage up to the lamp ignition level and to obtain energy-recovery action during the glow discharge mode. The operation principles are presented and also the system performances such as the lighting efficiency, spatial and angular uniformities are evaluated by hardware experiments. The results show that the proposed lighting system is a good candidate for the next-generation of LCD backlight systems.

  • HID(high intensity discharge)lamps are high pressure mercury lamp, high pressure sodium lamp and metalhalide lamp. metalhalide lamp among these lamps has considered to be one of the most effective artificial light sources and this lamp has good efficiency, good color rendition and good focusing capability, But the shortcorning of metalhalide lamp is known as acoustic resonance phenomena in the discharge tube when lighted by electronic ballast and then acoustic resonance cause various problems such as the arc instability, light output fluctuations. In this paper, to reduce the acoustic resonence phenomena, the electronic ballast was designed by three methods for high frequency operation wish frequency-modulated sinusodial waves in acoustic resonance frequency band. These frequency-modulated methods are resonance frequency and resonance frequency, resonance frequency and non-resonance frequency non-resonance frequency and non-resonance frequency Experiment results could't show the Presence of acoustic resonance visually and it proved that the resonance-generating conditions can be avoided by continuously changing the two operating frequencies in acoustic resonance band (20.59kHz∼94.2kHz).

  • In Recent, it became necessary to envelope the technology about electrodeless fluorescent lamp according to demand of the electrodeless fluorescent lamp system that used higher efficiency and advantage of long-lifetime. Especially, in the electrodeless fluorescent lamp which used H-mode, efficiency of lamp is decided from matching parameter of antena and inverter So it is of the utmost importance to design antena and inverter. Therefore, this paper used a transformer principle for efficiency rising of electrodeless fluorescent lamp and interpreted an equivalent circuit, used an impedance analyzer in order to confirm a performance enhancement of lamp along design of antenna, and confirmed parameter characteristic of R, L, C, Z, Phase, Q-factor along a change of magnetic flux density. • Long span, high-rise bridges are rapidly increasing nowadays. Because of high flexibility, such bridges are easily excited by winds, vehicles, and pedestrians. The vibration of bridge induces a vibration of lamp post and pillar. Wind loads can also excite lamp posts and traffic signal structures directly. Because of low damping, such vibrations of lamp post are frequently amplified and come to collapse or lamp failure. In addition, such vibration makes the maintenance cycle shorter and increases social cost. We conducted vibration tests and identified the dynamic characteristics of two types lamp posts, and proposed tuned mass dampers to control the vibrations. Established models of the lamp posts present the dynamic characteristics of the structures very well and they are used to design TMDs. In this study, we suggested a new-type TMD model that is small, simple, economic and effective to suppress the vibration of lamp posts. The efficiency of TMD was examined by numerically and is to be examined experimentally.
