  • Numerical analysis of two dimensional incompressible laminar free jet flow was carried out by using finite difference SMAC scheme. Flow characteristics of free jet flow such as jet width, similarity of jet velocity and hypothetical origin were investigated for different Reynolds numbers of Re=30 and 100. The reliability of predictions were confirmed by comparison with exact solution. Non-dimensional velocity distribution showed similarity of jet flow velocity after initial region. In the region of laminar flow, the location of hypothetical origin becomes more distant with Reynolds number.

  • Uniformity of velocity is quite important design points of a vertical laminar flow type clean room. In the present paper, flows in a room with a bottom pannel are numerically simulated by using a low-Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model, and a new flow model of the pannel are suggested. Resistance coefficient of the pannel and size of the exhaust channel show considerable effects on flow pattern and uniformity of flow on the bottom. Reflection coefficient also has important roles. A possibility to obtain the uniform and unidirectional flow is tested by adjusting the distribution of resistance coefficient of the pannel. Such a numerical simulation of the flow will be a good method to get optimun design parameters.

  • A new instantaneous flowmeter for hydraulics by means or cylindrical chokes is developed. In this method the instantaneous flowrate through chokes is predicted in real time from measurement of pressure difference on both sides of cylindrical choke. The experimental study for the flowrate of pulsating flow in a pipe is carried out to measure differential pressure drop by using a strain gauge pressure transducer with data acquisition and processing system. A pulsating flow is verified by a visualization method. In the present study, the flow characteristic variables of laminar pulsating flow are investigated analytically and experimentally in a circular pipe. Characteristic parameters of ratio of inertia term to pressure term($\phi_{t.1}$) and ratio of viscous term to pressure term($\phi_{z.1}$) are introduced to describe the flow pattern of laminar pulsating flow.

  • The GR51PP(MWCO 50,000) and GR40PP(MWCO 100,000) membranes manufactured by DDS were used in ultrafiltration of dextran(Mw. : 500,000) solution in flat plate ultrafiltration cell filled with various types of turbulence promoters. The flux improvement by using turbulence promoter was higher in laminar flow region than in turbulent flow region. The maximum improvements of permeate flux were foud as 112% and 50% I laminar flow region and turbulent flow region, respectively. Also, the solute rejection of the ultrafiltration membrane was improved by turbulence promoters and its effect was significant in the high transmembrane pressure and laminar flow region. The smaller the spacer mesh size was used, the higher the flux improved, but the pressure drop in ultrafiltration cell also increased. In laminar flow region, pressure drop by the spacer was negligible, but in turbulent flow region it changed significantly depending upon the mesh size of the spacer and therefore, its mesh size must be baken into account in the design of the process. The predicted results of the modified mass transfer correlation had better agreement with experimental results than those of unmodified one, The modified mass transfer correlations for laminar and turbulent flow region are shown as follow. $N_{sh}=0.151(N_{Re})^{0.199}(N_{Sc})^{0.22}(N_{Scm})^{0.197}\;(625 $N_{sh}=0.0165(N_{Re})^{0.428}(N_{Sc})^{0.33}(N_{Scm})^{0.223}\;(5015

  • In this study, a new model for calculating the liquid film thickness and condensation heat transfer coefficient in a vertical condenser tube is proposed by considering the effects of gravity, liquid viscosity, and vapor flow in the core region of the flow. In order to introduce the radial velocity profile in the liquid film, the liquid film flow was regarded to be in Couette flow dragged by the interfacial velocity at the liquid-vapor interface. For the calculation of the interfacial velocity, an empirical power-law velocity profile had been introduced. The resulting liquid film thickness and heat transfer coefficient obtained from the proposed model were compared with the experimental data from other experimental study and the results obtained from the other condensation models. In conclusion, the proposed model physically explained the liquid film thinning effect by the vapor shear flow and predicted the condensation heat transfer coefficient from experiments reasonably well.

  • The present work was performed to investigate the thermal and hydraulic characteristics of flow inside the plain and turbulator flat tubes for the automobile application. The pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient at laminar, transition and turbulent regimes were studied experimentally and numerically. The flow transition was confirmed by flow visualization and quantitative data. It is proposed equations for the friction and heat transfer coefficient in the fully developed laminar flow inside rectangular tube as function of aspect ratio.

  • The turbulent flow around a sphere was investigated using two experimental techniques: smoke-wire flow visualization in wind tunnel at Re=5300, 11000 and PIV measurements in a circulating water channel. The smoke-wire visualization shows flow separation points near an azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$, recirculating flow, transition from laminar to turbulent shear layer, evolving vortex roll-up and fully turbulent eddies in the sphere wake. The mean velocity field measured using a PIV technique in x-y center plane demonstrates the detailed near-wake structure such as nearly symmetric recirculation region, two toroidal vortices, laminar separation, transition and turbulent eddies. The PIV measurements of turbulent wake in y-z planes show that a recirculating vortex pair dominates the near-wake region.

  • There have been many studies for heat transfer enhancement. Particularly, the study of flow in heat exchangers which have fin device has been main theme in heat transfer area. Practically, the circular tube which has internal fins is widely used for developing heat transfer rate. In this study, flow and heat transfer analysis of the circular tube with fins are investigated. The height and the number of fins are arbitrary. The flow field is assumed to be laminar. The conformal mapping is used for analytic solution of the laminar flow field. Discretization of governing equation, namely, FDM was used for numerical analysis. The velocity field, flow rate and shear stress are calculated for some numbers of fins in circular tube and for some heights of fin. Temperature fields are plotted along the tube length. It can be shown that the numerical solution agrees with the analytical solution.

  • Two-dimensional stagnation flow toward a plane wall coated with magnetic fluid of uniform thickness is investigated. The flow field is represented as a similarity solution of the Navier-Stokes equation for this incompressible laminar flow. The resulting third order ordinary differential equation is solved numerically by using the shooting method and by determining two shooting parameters so as to satisfy the boundary and interface conditions. Features of the flow including streamline patterns are investigated for the varying values of density ratio, viscosity ratio, and Reynolds number. An adverse flow with double eddy pair in magnetic fluid region is found to emerge as the Reynolds number becomes higher than a threshold value. The results for the interface velocity, interface and wall shear stress, and boundary layer and displacement thickness are also presented.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the flow characteristics of water through rectangular PDMS microchannels with a hydraulic diameter ranging from 66.67 to 200 ${\mu}m$. In the experiments, the flow rate and pressure drop across the microchannels were measured at steady states. The experimental results were compared with the predictions from the conventional laminar flow theory. A significant difference between the experimental data and the theoretical predictions was found. Experimental results indicate that the pressure gradient and flow friction in microchannels are higher than those from the conventional laminar flow theory. This may be attributed to the fact that there exists effect of surface roughness of the microchannels. In this study, a surface roughness model is implemented to interpret the experimental data. A good agreement between the experimental data and the numerical predictions with a surface roughness model were found.
