토혈과 원통 모양의 토물을 주소로 내원한 Trichosporon beigelii 식도염 1례 (A Case of Trichosporon beigelii Esophagitis Presenting Hematemesis with a Large Amorphous Material)

  • 토혈과 함께 변성된 생체 조직의 일부로 보이는 토물을 주소로 내원한 소아에서 응급 상부위장관 내시경 시술을 이용하여 식도 부에서 유출된 토혈과 토물로 진단하고, 조직 검사를 이용하여 드문 원인 균인 T. beigelii에 의한 진균성 식도염으로 진단된 례를 경험하였다. 진균성 식도염에 의해 이미 형성되어 있던 가막성 조직은 변성된 식도 점막부의 상피 세포들로서 점막하 조직으로 부터 원통형으로 분리되었으며, 이때 발생한 구토에 의하여 토혈과 함께 토물로 배출된 희귀한 증례이다.

  • 서울주걱흡충감염 마우스의 혈청내 IgA와 소장의 IgA의 반응을 알아보려고 하였다 서울주걱흡충 의 피낭유충 200마리씩을 Balb/c 마우스에 경구 감염시킨 뒤 3. 7 14, 28일에 희생시켜, 혈청에 서의 서울주걱홉충 특이 IgA를 면역효소법으로 측정하였다. 또한 소장에서의 IgA를 면역조직화학법으로 반응을 관찰하였다. 감염 7일째부터 혈청내 특이 IgA의 역가가 증가하기 시작하여 28일째도 지속되었다. 소장 상피세포에서의 IgA 반응은 감염 14일에 가장 강하였다. 이 결과로 보아 서울주걱흡충 감염 Balb/c 마우스에서 감염후 혈청내 특이 IgA가 증가하고 소장에서 국소반응이 나타나나 충체 배출에는 큰 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 생각한다.

동물원 사자의 Clostridium perfringens에 의한 장독혈증 감염증례 (Clostridium perfringens enterotoxicosis in a lion of zoo)

  • A 3-year-old male lion at Gwangju Uchi Zoo presented for acute onset of haemorrhagic diarrhea and died. The lion showed reddening of the anus as the cause of haemorrhagic enteritis. Necropsy revealed a severe haemorrhagic colitis. Grossly, lesions included icterus, excess pericardial fluid. dark kidneys, and an enlarged, friable liver. The intestines were flaccid, thin-walled, dilated, and 9as-filled. The spleen was enlarged and pulpy because of congestion. Most of organs were rapidly postmortem autolysis. Histopathologically, the intestines were edema and transient leukocyte infiltration of the lamina propria, followed by necrosis. Especially of the intestinal submucosa was edematous, haemorrhagic, or filled with leukocytes. The crypts remained intact or dilated. C perfringens was isolated from a lion at bloody feces, and identified C perfringens type A, confirming the presence of C perfringens $\alpha-toxin$ by PCR. These results were suggested that the case were diagnosed as enterotoxicosis in the lion. More studies are needed on lion enterotoxemia. especially of its etiopathogenesis, in order to develop more efficient prevention for this disease.

한국재래산양의 태아 및 신생아의 결장 발달에 관하여 (Development on the colon of fetuses and neonates in Korean native goats)

  • The development of colon in fetuses between 60, 90, 120 days of gestation and neonates of Korean native goats was investigated by light scanning electron microscopy. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The colonic wall appeared to be differentiated into the epithelium, lamina propria, submucosa, tunica muscularis and serosa in 60-day-old fetus. 2. The epithelium of the colonic villi was stratified in some areas and simple columnar in others at 60- and 90day-old fetus but was only observed simple columnar epithelium at 120-day-old fetus. 3. The goblet cells and the intestinal glands appeared in the colonic mucosa at 90 days of gestation and continued gradually to increase in number during gestation. 4. The well-developed villi of the colon appeared in columnar shape at 60 days of gestation and increased in length and width until 90 days of gestation but the villi appeared to be shorter and degenerated after 120 days of gestation. At birth only the rudiment trace of the villi remained. 5. The tunical muscularis of the colon was continuously developed during gestation period. The inner circular and outer longitudinal muscle layers were distinguishly observed in the colon of 90-day-old fetuses. 6. Scanning electron microscopically, the colonic villi developed in columnar shape or finger-like of fetuses at 60 days of gestation. The of the colonic villi became degenerated after 120 days of gestation. At birth only the rudiment trace of villi remained.

한국재래산양의 태아 및 신생아의 제4위 발달에 관하여 (Development on the abomasum of fetuses and neonates in Korean native goats)

  • The development of abomasum in fetuses between 60, 90, 120 days of gestation and neonates of Korean native goats was investigated by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. The abomasum wall appeared to be differentiated into the epithelium, lamina propria, muscle layer, and serosa at 60 days of gestation. The epithelium was stratified columnar and these nuclei were located near the apical two thirds portion of the cell at 60 days of gestation, and then transformed into simple columnar epithelium with the flat basal nuclei. 2. The inner circular and outer longitudinal muscle layers were observed at 90 days of gestation and the blood vessels had become quite well developed as various arterioles, venules and capillaries of different size during this age. 3. Gastric pits were seen at 90 days of gestation and continued gradually to increase depth during gestation. 4. The mucous, parietal and chief cells appeared in epithelium at 90 days of gestation and continued gradually to increase in number during gestation. In 120 days fetuses and neonates, muscle layer had become very thickeness. 5. Scanning electron microscopically, the inner surface of the abomasum already consisted of wavy spiral folds which had many fine wrinkles at 60 days of gestation. In 90 day old fetuses, each spiral fold was enlarged and its surface was tended to be split into many straight longitudinal ridges and among these ridge were found shallow grooves, At 120 days, the subdivided swellings of ridges were progressively complicated in shape. In the neonates, the inner surface was flat and holed with many gastric pits. 6. Transmission electron microscopically, the epithelium was straified columnar and these nuclei were irregular shape at 60 days fetus. The parietal, chief and mucous cells were observed in 90 day old fetuses and continued gradually to increase in number during gestation. 7. The development of the abomasum was relatively slow at early stages, it was accelerated greatly in the last of gestation.

Immune Cells in the Female Reproductive Tract

  • The female reproductive tract has two main functions: protection against microbial challenge and maintenance of pregnancy to term. The upper reproductive tract comprises the fallopian tubes and the uterus, including the endocervix, and the lower tract consists of the ectocervix and the vagina. Immune cells residing in the reproductive tract play contradictory roles: they maintain immunity against vaginal pathogens in the lower tract and establish immune tolerance for sperm and an embryo/fetus in the upper tract. The immune system is significantly influenced by sex steroid hormones, although leukocytes in the reproductive tract lack receptors for estrogen and progesterone. The leukocytes in the reproductive tract are distributed in either an aggregated or a dispersed form in the epithelial layer, lamina propria, and stroma. Even though immune cells are differentially distributed in each organ of the reproductive tract, the predominant immune cells are T cells, macrophages/dendritic cells, natural killer (NK) cells, neutrophils, and mast cells. B cells are rare in the female reproductive tract. NK cells in the endometrium significantly expand in the late secretory phase and further increase their number during early pregnancy. It is evident that NK cells and regulatory T (Treg) cells are extremely important in decidual angiogenesis, trophoblast migration, and immune tolerance during pregnancy. Dysregulation of endometrial/decidual immune cells is strongly related to infertility, miscarriage, and other obstetric complications. Understanding the immune system of the female reproductive tract will significantly contribute to women's health and to success in pregnancy.

Distribution of Cold Receptor Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 8-Immunopositive Axons in the Mouse Dental Pulp and Periodontal Tissue

  • Transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) plays a crucial role in innocuous cool sensation, acute cold pain and cold-induced hyperalgesia during pathologic conditions. To help understand TRPM8-mediated cold perception in the dental pulp and periodontal tissues, we examined the distribution of TRPM8-immunopositive (+) axons in molar and incisor pulp and periodontal tissues using transgenic mice expressing a genetically encoded axonal tracer in TRPM8+ neurons. In the radicular pulp of the molar teeth, a small number of TRPM8+ axons were observed. TRPM8+ axons branched frequently and extensively in the core of coronal pulp, forming a network in the peripheral pulp. Some TRPM8+ axons ascended between odontoblasts and were observed in the dentinal tubule. TRPM8+ axons were linear-shaped in the radicular pulp, whereas many TRPM8+ axons showed portions shaped like beads connected with thin axonal stands at the peripheral pulp. TRPM8 was densely expressed in the bead portions. In the incisor pulp, TRPM8+ axons were occasionally observed in the core of the coronal pulp and rarely observed at the peripheral pulp. TRPM8+ axons were occasionally observed and showed a linear shape rather than a bead-like appearance in the periodontal ligament and lamina propria of the gingival tissue. These findings, showing differential distribution of TRPM8+ axons between radicular and coronal portions of the molar pulp, between incisor and molar pulp, and between dental pulp and periodontal tissues, may reflect differential cold sensitivity in these regions.

Evaluation of 2 techniques of epithelial removal in subepithelial connective tissue graft surgery: a comparative histological study

  • Purpose: Subepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTGs) are commonly performed for the treatment of gingival recession due to their high predictability. This study evaluated and histologically compared connective tissue grafts in terms of the presence of epithelial remnants and composition of the tissue types that were present (epithelium, lamina propria, and submucosa). Methods: Ten patients underwent epithelium removal using 2 different techniques: the use of a blade (group B) and through abrasion (group A). Twenty samples were collected and each tissue type was analyzed histologically in terms of its area, thickness, and proportion of the total area of the graft. Results: In 4 samples (40%) from group B (n=10) and 2 samples (20%) from group A (n=10), the presence of an epithelial remnant was observed, but the difference between the groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Likewise, no statistically significant differences were observed between the groups regarding the area, mean thickness, or proportion of the total area for any of the tissue types (P>0.05). Conclusions: Histologically, SCTGs did not show statistically significant differences in terms of their tissue composition depending on whether they were separated from the epithelial tissue by abrasion or by using a blade.

The Histopathological Examination for Diagnosis of MALT Lymphoma in the Stomach

  • Primary gastric lymphoma (PGL) is derived from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and it differs from nodal lymphoma in histologic features and biologic behavior. Recent studies have showed that Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori ) infection is closely related to the development of low grade gastric lymphoma, and eradication of the infection induces regression of the tumor. H. pylori infection is known to be important to the development of gastric MALT lymphoma. The aim of this study was to elucidate the histopathological behavior of PGL according to the concept of MALT and to compare the predictive value of tests frequently used for diagnosis of H. pylori. The histological features of gastric lymphoma arising from MALT are the replacement of glands by uniform dense infiltration of centrocyte-like cells in the lamina propria and lymphoidepithelial lesion. H. pylori-associated histologic changes of neutrophilic infiltration, lymphoid follicle or aggregates formation and intestinal metaplasia, and H. pylori immunoreactivity were analyzed. Detection of H. pylori in chronic active gastritis and peptic ulcer suggests a possible role of H. pylori in the pathogenesis. Giemsa, Toluidine blue and Long H&E stains were used in H. pylori detection. Histopathological examination of gastric biopsy specimens revealed lymphoepithelial lesions pathognomonic of MALT lymphoma, and immunohistochemical staining for CD20 was diffusely positive. CD3 was positive in reactive T cells. PAX-5 was negative except the follicle. Bcl-2, cytokeratin, Ki-67, and c-myc were positive. The findings may indicate a predictable transition of low grade to high grade, and c-myc may be used as a valuable marker before molecular pathology diagnosis.

미꾸라지 (Misgurnus mizolepis)의 뒤집힘병에 관한 연구 (An Overturn disease of Cultured Mud Loach (Misgurnus mizolepis))

  • 양식 미꾸라지 (Misgurnus mizolepis)가 수중으로 잠입하지 못하고 양어지의 물표면에 배를 위로 한 채 힘없이 회전 유영을 하는 질병이 발생하였다. 병어는 복부가 팽만되어 있었으며, 해부하여 보면 소화관에 커다란 공기방울의 축적, 장염이 현저하였다. 병어를 혈액학적으로 조사한 결과 적혈구수, Ht치 및 Hb 농도는 건강어와 차이가 없었다. 병리조직학적으로는 아가미의 호흡상피의 증생과 새변의 유착, 소화관 상피세포의 출혈, 괴사 및 박리가 관찰되었다. 뒷지느러미와 항문사이를 실로 결박하여 항문으로부터 공기의 배출을 억제한 재현 실험에서 발병어와 같은 증상이 재현되었다. 따라서 이 병은 빠른 성장을 목적으로 고단백질 사료를 투여함으로서 장호흡을 위하여 마신 공기가 소화관내에 축적되고, 축적된 공기의 부력 때문에 물속으로 하강하지 못하게 되고, 또 소화관을 압박하여 소화관에 순환장애를 일으킨 결과 폐사한 것으로 추정된다.
