  • A methodology for determining the design allowables of composite laminates by using lamina level test data and finite element analysis (FEA) is proposed and verified in this paper. An existing method that yields the laminate design allowables by using the complete test results for laminates was improved to reduce the expensive and time-consuming tests. Input property samples for FEA were generated after considering the statistical distribution characteristics of lamina level test data., and design allowables were derived from several FEA analyses of laminates. To apply and verify the proposed method, Hexcel 8552 IM7 test data were used. For both un-notched and open-hole laminate configurations, it was found that the design allowables obtained from the analysis correctly predicted the laminate test data within the confidence interval. The potential of the present simulation to substitute the laminate tests was demonstrated well.

  • To reduce these costs and time by finite element analysis program has been much research (3~4). At virtual CAE program as like Abaques, Ansys, Ls-dyna and Nastran, the input data of material is got bellow coupon test. In case of carbon composite, it is also put in lamina/laminate properties. There have big problem. If you want to simulate FW(filament winding or wind blade) how do you input material data. Each area of FW is different stacking conditions. It's too hard that each area is tested for inputting lamina or laminate properties. The composite structure increasing load is applied occurred as the matrix dependence of the crack-induced nonlinearity and nonlinear mobility appears since the initial damage. And uni-direction for this research applies the theory to have been confined to. On this study, we are going to get basically fiber properties and matrix than carbon composite properties for simulating according stacking method by GENOA-MCQ. It is help to simulate easily composite material. Also Calculate the matrix nonlinear for simulating non-linear.

  • A post-tensioned reinforced concrete slab bridge is analyzed by specially orthotropic laminate theory. Symmetrically reinforced slab with tension and compression steel is considered for convenience of analysis. Each longitudinal and transverse steel layer is regarded as a lamina, and material constants of each lamina is calculated by the use of the rule of mixture. This bridge is under uniformly distributed vertical loads, and axial loads and end moments due to post-tensioning. In this paper, finite difference method is used for numerical analysis of this bridge. Theory and analysis method of specially orthotropic laminate plates used in this paper can be used for design of new bridges, and maintenance and repair of old bridges.

  • In this paper the analysis of laminate composite folded plates with arbitrary angle connection like box girder is studied by finite strip method Total stiffness of laminated plate is obtained by integration of the stiffness in each layer or lamina through laminate thickness and total stiffness in each layer or lamina through laminate thickness and total tiffness matrix is obtained by substitutionto equilibrium equation derived from the minimum total potential energy theorem. The assumed displacement functions for a finite strip method in plate or box girder analysis are combinations of one-way polynomial functions in the transverse direction and harmonic functions in the span-wise direction. Finite strip method with the merits of the simplification in modeling and the reduction of analytical time is accurate in the analysis of laminate composite folded plates shaped like box firders.

  • Since the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between concrete and GFRP, steel and GFRP are quite different, GFRP laminates with different laminas stacking-sequence present different thermal behavior and currently there is no specification on mechanical properties of GFRP laminates, it is necessary to investigate the thermal influence on composite girder with stay-in-place (SIP) bridge deck at different levels and on different scales. This paper experimentally and theoretically investigated the CTE of GFRP at lamina's and laminate's level on micro-mechanics scales. The theoretical CTE values of laminas and laminates agreed well with test results, indicating that designers could obtain thermal properties of GFRP laminates with different lamina stacking-sequence through micro-mechanics methods. On the basis of the CTE tests and theoretical analysis, the thermal behaviors of composite girder with hybrid GFRP-concrete deck were studied numerically and theoretically on macro-mechanics scales. The theoretical results of concrete and steel components of composite girder agreed well with FE results, but the theoretical results of GFRP profiles were slightly larger than FE and tended to be conservative at a safety level.

  • Cutouts are often provided in structural and aircraft components for ventilation, for access, inspection, electric lines and fuel lines or sometimes to lighten the structure. This paper addresses the effects of cutout shape (i.e., circular, square, diamond, elliptical-vertical and elliptical-horizontal) and size on buckling and postbuckling response of quasi-isotropic (i.e., $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$) composite laminate under uni-axial compression. The finite element method is used to carry out the investigation. The formulation is based on first order shear deformation theory and von Karman's assumptions are used to incorporate geometric nonlinearity. The 3-D Tsai-Hill criterion is used to predict the failure of a lamina while the onset of delamination is predicted by the interlaminar failure criterion. It is observed that for the smaller size cutout area there is no significant effect of cutout shape on load-deflection response of the laminate. It is also concluded that the cutout size has substantial influence on the buckling and postbuckling response of the laminate with elliptical-horizontal cutout, while this effect is observed to be the least in case of laminate with elliptical-vertical cutout.

  • A numerical approach for predicting the ultimate strength of laminate composites has been studied using the Weibull distribution of the strengths of lamina plies. The probabilistic initial failure strengths of laminates were calculated using Tsai-Hill failure criterion. The ultimate strength of the laminate composites has been predicted using progressive failure analysis. The experimental results show that the strength prediction based on the Weibull distribution of ply strength reasonably agrees well with the experimentals better than equal strength assumption.

  • This study suggests the design of the functionally gradient composite, [0/90/0/core]$_s$ cross-ply laminate, to prevent stress concentration induced from the difference of rigidity between the bone and the artificial hip joint and to reinforce the wear property of the surface and the expectation of their mechanical properties. First, the four-point bending test is done about wet bones and dry bones to know the mechanical properties of the cortical bones. In result, the wet bone shows the viscoelastic behavior and the dry bone shows the elastic behavior. Moreover, we expect the properties of the proposed gradient composites as a function of carbon fiber volume fraction in each layer to apply Halpin-Tsai equation, CLPT(classical laminate plate theory), and Bernoulli beam theory etc. and decide the thickness ratio of each lamina in order to match Young's modulus of the anisotropic cortical bone with the proposed gradient composites.

  • The centrifugal terce acting on a rotating disk creates the in-plane loads in radial and circumferential directions. Application of fiber reinforced composite materials to the relating disk can satisfy the demand for the increment of its rotating speed. However, the existing researches have been confined to lamina disks. This paper deals with the vibration analysis of rotating composite laminate disks. Dynamic equation is formulated in order to calculate the natural frequency and critical speed for rotating laminated disks. Galerkin's method is applied to obtain the series solution. The numerical results are given for the CFRP laminate disks with stacking sequence [0/90]s and [90/0]s.

  • This paper presents analytical expressions for the determination of out of plane thermo-elastic properties for conventional laminated composite plates. The approach follows that commonly accepted for in-plane properties. Results over a variety of lay-ups reveals that it is poor assumption to use transverse tape lamina properties to represent out of plane laminate properties for laminates with more than 10% plies oriented off-axis($90^{\circ}$) from uniaxial or for laminates with angle plies of $15^{\circ}$ or greater.
