  • This paper presents a study on defects in pearlite lamella structure of high carbon steel by means of finite-element method(FEM) simulation. High carbon pearlite steel wire is characterized by its nano-sized microstructure feature of alternation ferrite and cementite. FEM simulation was performed based on a suitable FE model describing the boundary conditions and the exact material behavior. Due to the lamella structure in high carbon pearlite steel wire, material plastic behavior was taken into account on deformation of ferrite and cementite. The effects of many important parameters(reduction in area, semi-die angle, lamella spacing, cementite thickness) on wire drawing process can be predicted by DEFORM-2D. It is possible to obtain the important basic data which can be guaranteed in the ductility of high carbon steel wire by using FEM simulation.

  • This paper presents a study on defects in pearlite lamella structure of high carbon steel by means of finite-element method(FEM) simulation. High-carbon pearlite steel wire is characterized by its nano-sized microstructure feature of alternation ferrite and cementite. The likely fatigue crack is located on interface of the lamella structure where the maximum amplitude of the longitudinal shear stress and transverse shear stress was calculated during cyclic loading. The FEM is proposed for maximum shear stress from loading of lamella structure, and a method is predicted to analyze the likely fatigue crack generation. It is possible to obtain the important basic data which can be guaranteed in the ductility of high carbon steel wire by using FEM simulation.

  • The use of continuous welded rail is increasing because of its many advantages, including vibration reduction, enhanced driving stability, and maintenance cost savings. In this work, two different types of continuous welded rails were examined to determine the influence of repeated wheel-rail contact on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical properties of the rails. The crystal structure was determined by x-ray diffraction, and the microstructure was examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Tensile and microhardness tests were conducted to examine the mechanical behaviors of prepared specimens taken from different positions in the cross section of both newly manufactured rail and worn rail. Analysis revealed that both the new and worn rail had a mixed microstructure consisting of ferrite and pearlite. The specimens from the top position of each rail exhibited decreased lamella spacing of the pearlite and increased yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and hardness, as compared with those from other positions of the rail. It is thought that the enhanced mechanical property on the top position of the worn rail might be explained by a mixed effect resulting from a directional microstructure, the decreased lamella spacing of pearlite, and work hardening by the repeated wheel-rail contact stress.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the hot forging ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ultra high carbon steel. The microstructure of ultra high carbon steel with 1.5%wt.C consisted of a proeutectoid cementite network and acicular microstructure in pearlite matrix. With increasing hot forging ratio, the volume and thickness of the network and acicular proeutectoid cementite decreased. Lamella spacing and the thickness of eutectoid cementite decreased with increasing hot forging raito, and were broken up into particle shapes, which then became spheroidized. When the forging ratio was over 65%, the network and acicula shape of the as-cast state disappeared. With increasing hot forging ratio, hardness, tensile strength, elongation and impact value were not changed up to 50%, and then rapidly increased with the increase of the forging ratio.
