  • In this paper, remote sensing is used to estimate trophic state which is primary concern in a lake. In using remote sensing, this study estimated trophic state not with conventional method such as regression equations but with classification methods. As europhication is caused by the extraodinary proliferation of the algae, chlorophyll a and transparency are applied to remote sensing data.. Maximum Likelihood Classification and Minimum Distance Classification which are kinds of classification methods enabled trophic state to be confirmed in a lake. These are obtained as the result of applying remote sensing to classify trophic state in a lake. Firest, when we evaluate tropic state in a large area of water body, the application of remote sensing data can obtain more than 70% accuracies just in using basic classification methods. Second, in the aspect of classification, the accuracy of Minimum Distance Classification is usually better than that of Maximum Likelihood Classification. This result is caused that samples have normal distribution, but their numbers are a few to apply statistical method. Therefore, classification method is required such as artificial neural networks which are not influenced by statistical distribution. Third, this study enables the trophic state of water body to be analyzed and evaluated rapidly, periodically and visibly. Also, this study is good for forming proper countermeasure accompanying with trophic state progress extent in a lake and is useful for basic-data.

  • First, We classified man-made lakes in Korea as 4-type lakes, that is, there were River-run lakes, Dendritic lakes, Reservoir-lakes, River-mouth lakes, We studied on the environmental factors of 3-type lakes except River-mouth lakes, compared these lakes with natural lakes in foreign country. Environmental factors were watershed area, lake storage, mean depth, hydraulic retention time. As a results, 3-type lakes in Korea had remarkable differences one another according to above-mentioned environmental factors. First, We recognized that River-run lakes had higher nutrient loading according to having wider watershed area than natural lakes, and had lower algal growth rate according to shorter hydraulic retention time than natural lakes. Dendritic lake had higher nutrient loading than natural lakes, longer retention time than River-run lake. Reservoir-lakes had environmental factors between Dentritic lakes and River-run lakes. Therefore, If this studies had no quantitative results about various factors, We recognized that man-made lakes in korea had different environmental factors as compared with natural lakes, and had clear classification among 3-type lakes.

  • The present work provides a result from the preliminary experiment for hydrocyclone technology. In this work, local lake sediments and waste coal fly ash were used as test samples, prior to the application of hydrocyclone technology to the waste sludge thickening. A few cyclones based on the Rietema standard geometry were prepared. Chemical analysis of the sediments showed that more organic contaminants were in smaller particles. The experimental tests further showed that physical characteristics of particles, configuration of the cyclone and operation condition would affect the separation efficiency. The current results showed that small size cyclones might improve the separation and concentration of the lake sediments, and higher inlet velocity would increase the concentration rate of under flow and absolute concentration of sediment particles.

  • Lake Enriquillo, the largest lake in the Dominican Republic, recently has undergone unusual water area changes since 2001 thus it has been affected seriously by local community's livelihood. Earthquakes and seismic activities of Hispaniola plate tectonic coupled with human activities and climate change are addressed as factors causing the increasing. Thus, a thorough study on relationship between lake area changing, and those factors is needed urgently. To do so, this study applied MESMA on MODIS data to extract water area of Lake Enriquillo during 2001 and 2012 bimonthly, with six issues 12-year. MODIS provides high temporal resolution, and its coarse spatial resolution is compensated by MESMA fraction map. The increase in water area was $142.2km^2$, and the maximum lake area was $338.0km^2$ (in 2012). Water areas extracted by two Landsat scenes at two different times with three image classification approaches (ISODATA, MNDWI, and TCW) were used to assess accuracy of MODIS and MESMA results; it indicated that MESMA water areas are same as ISODATA's, less than 0.4%, while the highest difference is between MESMA and TCW, 2.4%. A number of previously formulated hypotheses of lake area change were investigated based on the outcomes of the present study, though none of them could fully explain the changes.

  • The continuous social development has led to increasing pollution in lakes. This study proposed the LVRI (Lake Vulnerability Resilience Indicator) based on the vulnerability assessment of climate change for an environmental risk assessment in lakes sufferign water pollution in an integrated aspect of the characteristics in lake watersheds. A total of 11 representative assessment factors were selected and constructed for 6 lake basins in the Geum River Watershed to calculate the exposure, sensitivity and adaptation indicators in a vulnerability assessment classification system. The weight coefficients for assessment factors of the LVRI were also calculated using the Entropy method. This study also compared the rank results of the lake environmental risk with/without the weight coefficients of assessment factors for the practical application of the proposed lake environmental risk assessment method. The lake environmental risk results estimated in this study can be used for long-term water quality analysis and management in lakes.

  • Kojima Lake in Okayama prefecture is a freshing reservoir constructed adjacent to the oldest reclaimed land in Japan. This lake has a serious water quality problem because two urban rivers are flowing into it. In the present study, unsupervised classification was performed at intervals of several years using Landsat MSS data in the past 15 years. After geometric correction of these data, MSS data corresponding geographically to the field observation data were extracted and subjected to the multivariate analysis. Water quality distribution in the lake was estimated using the regression equation obtained as a result. In addition, two - dimensional and three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed and compared with the distribution obtained from the satellite images. Behavior of the reservoir flows is complicated and water quality distribution varies greatly with the flows. Here, I report the results of analysis on three factors, field observation, numerical simulation and satellite images.

  • Drought is an environmental disaster typically defined as an unusual deficiency of water supply over an extended period. Satellite remote sensing provides an alternative approach to monitoring drought over large areas. In this study, we monitored drought patterns over about 30 years (1985-2015), using satellite imagery of Lake Soyang, Gangwondo, South Korea. Landsat images were classified using ISODATA, maximum likelihood analysis, and an artificial neural network to derive the lake area. In addition, the relationship between areas of Lake Soyang and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was analyzed. The results showed that the artificial neural network was a better method for determining the area of the lake. Based on the relationship between the SPI value and changes in area, the R2 value was 0.52. This means that the area of the lake varied depending on SPI value. This study was able to detect and monitor drought conditions in the Lake Soyang area. The results of this study are used in the development of a regional drought monitoring program.

  • In this study, a hydrocyclone operated by centrifugal force was examined as a part of dredge system of lake sediments. It does not help dehydration of the sediments, but also enables the classification of fine particles in the stable and sanitary treatment. Several experiments were performed focusing on the separation efficiency under the condition of room temperature with virtual sediment samples and simulated particles. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the apex size of the cyclone greatly affected the cut diameter(d$_{50}$), and high density particles were separated more effectively.y.
