  • This study was carried out to select the utilizable vegetations for the stabilization of slopes and river banks, landscape creation and water quality cleansing in dams, lakes and streams. In this study, 10 herbaceous plants were investigated for their survival and growth characteristics under complete and partly flooding conditions in the nursery. The ranking order of flooding tolerance based on survival ability showed that Iris pseudoacorus, Phragmites communis and Phragmites japonica were first, Typha angustata, Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Pennisetum alopecuroides were second, and Cymbopogon tortilis, Miscanthus sinensis, Kummerowia striata and Lolium multiflorum were last. That of flooding tolerance base on growth ability showed that Iris pseudoacorus, Phragmites communis, Phragmites japonica, Typha angustata and Miscanthus sacchariflorus were first, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Miscanthus sinensis and Kummerowia striata were second, and Cymbopogon tortilis and Lolium multiflorum were last. Espcially, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Iris pseudoacorus, Phragmites japonica and Phragmites communis showed good survival and growth abilities when they were complete flooded for 60 days. Also high flooding tolerant species grow as better as flooding period longer under the partly flooding condition. It was found that Pennisetum alopecuroides and Kummerowia striata have excess moisture tolerance because they showed good survival and growth under the partly flooding condition. This study confirmed that the possibilities of utilizing Iris pseudoacorus, Typha angustata, Phragmites japonica, Phragmites japonica, Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Pennisetum alopecuroides and Kummerowia striata as the efficient plants for vegetation measures on the flooded slopes of dam and various impoundment sites.

  • In this study, when the stability of the structure against the ocean wave is considered for designing the offshore structures in the Pacific, Indian ocean and Atlantic regions where the cyclone is largely generated, the ocean wave caused by the cyclone as well as the storm surge which called wind induced wave shall be predicted accurately for the purpose of judgment. The predicted wind induced wave was evaluated by comparing the outcome results the model test of Nobuhiro Matsunaga (1996) and Conventional Experiment forms such as Jonswap spectral forms(Carter, 1982), Simplified Donelan / Jonswap forms(Wilson 1965), Donelan spectral forms(Donelan 1980), Revised SPM forms(Schafer Lake 2005, 2007, 2008), SPM forms(CERC 1977), the CEM forms(Kazeminezhad et al., 2005), SMB forms(Sverdrup Munk and Bretschneider 1947,1954, 1970), and Revised Wilson forms(Wilson 1965, Goda 2003). Most of these conventional experiment forms confirmed a good match when the fetch length is less than 10 km. However, normal cyclone fetch length is more than 100km, With this fetch length, the comparison result is 10.4% of deviation when used Jonswap spectral forms(Carter, 1982) but the deviation of the other forms is around 74% due to boundary limit of fetch and wind duration. Therefore, in this study, we proposed the revised forms after comparing these results with the model results. We confirmed that the deviation range is around 10% based on revisited experiment forms. Since the model test was carried out in the small water tank, the scale up factor was applied to the mode test results in order to obtain similar results to the actual environment from revisited forms.

  • The effects of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and iron on cyanobacterial bloom potentials were investigated in Daechung Reservoir, Korea. Potassium showed the highest correlation with the cyanobacterial cell number (r=0.487, P<0.05) and phycocyanin concentration (r=0.499, P<0.05). However, it was not likely that the potassium had directly affected the bloom formation, because the variations of its concentration were not significantly large. In contrast, the Fe concentration fluctuated drastically and exhibited a negative correlation with the cyanobacterial cell number (r=- 0.388, P<0.1) and phycocyanin concentration (r=-0.446, P<0.05). Accordingly, the K:Fe atomic ratio would appear to reflect the extent of cyanobacterial bloom more precisely than K or Fe alone. The K:Fe ratio specifically correlated with cyanobacterial percentage, the cyanobacterial cell number and phycocyanin concentration (r=0.840, P<0.001; r=0.416, P<0.05; r=0.522, P<0.01, respectively). With the K:Fe atomic ratio of over 200, the chlorophyll-a concentration, cyanobacterial cell number, and phycocyanin concentration exceeded $10\mu$g $1^{-1}$20,000 cells $ml^{-1}$, and 20 pM, respectively, the general criteria of eutrophic water.

  • A study on fugitive dust dispersion was conducted at Saemanguem reclaimed area located at the west coastal area of Jeon-buk Province Total reclaimed area is 40,100ha developed by building a 33km long sea dike through Gunsan, Gimje, and Buan. (Land: 28,300ha, Fresh Water Lake: 11,800ha) After this area was completely reclaimed in 2006, there has been high possibility of dust generation and dispersion to the neighboring area. The dust generated at the reclaimed land was composed mainly of minerals with high salinity, and it could make harmful effect on crop production as well on to human's health such as eye irritation and respiratory disease. Especially, when those aerosol particles are reached on the leaves of farm crops, the photosynthesis and respiration of the plants can be under restraint resulting in the decrease of agricultural productivity of the nearby farm areas. Furthermore, highly concentrated salty particles can directly damage the leaf cells. In this study, field experiment has been conducted to regularly measure the locally suspended dust particles and analyze how they were dispersed to the neighboring areas. The collected dust particles were analyzed to examine theirs sizes, concentrations, and components. The SPSS statistical program was also used to separate the dust concentration generated by the reclaimed land from the total dust concentration measured at the measuring locations.

  • Methyl violet, used extensively in the commercial textile industry and as a biological stain, is a hazardous recalcitrant. Aspergillus sp. strain CB-TKL-1 isolated from a water sample from Tsumoriri Lake, Karzok, Ladakh, India, was found to completely decolorize methyl violet within 24 h when cultured under aerobic conditions at $25^{\circ}C$. The rate of decolorization was determined by monitoring the decrease in the absorbance maxima of the dye by UV-visible spectroscopy. The decolorization of methyl violet was optimal at pH 5.5 and $30^{\circ}C$ when agitated at 200 rpm. Addition of glucose or arabinose (2%) as a carbon source and sodium nitrate or soyapeptone (0.2%) as a nitrogen source enhanced the decolorization ability of the culture. Furthermore, the culture exhibited a maximum decolorization rate of methyl violet after 24 h when the C:N ratio was 10. Nine N-demethylated decolorized products of methyl violet were identified based on UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and LC-MS analyses. The decolorization of methyl violet at the end of 24 h generated mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexa-N-demethylated intermediates of pararosaniline. The variation of the relative absorption peaks in the decolorized sample indicated a linear decrease of hexa-N-demethylated compounds to non-N-demethylated pararosaniline, indicating a stepwise N-demethylation in the decolorization process.

  • Shihwa tidal freshwater marsh was constructed recently to treat pollutants entering Shihwa lake. In this study, we examined the spatial and temporal patterns of heavy metal accumulation in soils of Shihwa marsh and sought correlations between several soil variables (pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and acid ammonium oxalate-extractable Fe and Al contents) and the heavy metal concentration of soils. Surface soil samples (0∼20 cm) were collected in June 2000, November 2000, and July 2001, and were analyzed for heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, As, and Hg) and soil chemical properties. The neutral pH and water-saturated conditions of Shihwa marsh appeared to favor immobilization of heavy metal through adsorption onto soils. The concentrations of heavy metal (especially Zn, Cu, and Cr) in soils of Shihwa marsh increased along the sampling occasions, suggesting that soils of Shihwa marsh serve as a sink of heavy metal. Among the sub-marshes, metal concentrations were highest in Banweol high marshes and lowest in Samhwa marshes. The temporal and spatial variations in the heavy metal concentrations of soils were correlated positively with organic matter and oxalate extractable Fe and Al contents, but negatively with electrical conductivity. These results suggest that organic matter and hydrous oxide of Fe/Al may playa key role in removing heavy metals in soils of Shihwa marsh, and that heavy metal removing capacity would increase with desalinization. However, the removal patterns of heavy metal by reeds warrant further studies to evaluate the total removal capacity of heavy metals by Shihwa marsh.

  • Despite the widespread use of GIS over the past ten years, it has been limited application for regional modeling of pollutant loadings such as sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus(non-point source pollution), The goals of this study were to: select important processes and parameters of watersheds that contribute to non-point source pollution degradation, develop a ranking model to use the environmental geologic data and verify the model by comparing results with existing water quality data(Chung-ju Lake) for specific watersheds, The GIS database consisted of topography, geology, soils, precipitation, rainfall erosivity, land use, and watershed boundaries. The index(NPSP) for assessing non-point source pollution was comprised in the following three seperate components: soil loss index(SLI) assesses the potential soil erosion and sedim-ent delivery from field to stream; run-off potential ratio(R.P.R) predicts the potential production of surface runoff; chloropgyll-a index ranks the potential manure(animal or human) production within a watershed. The GIS model was a valuable tool to assess the impact of environmental pollation in watersheds.
