The aim of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility from landslides in the Lai Chau region of Vietnam, using Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing data, focusing on the relationship between tectonic fractures and landslides. Landslide locations were identified from an interpretation of aerial photographs and field surveys. Topographic and geological data and satellite images were collected, processed, and constructed into a spatial database using GIS data and image processing techniques, and a scheme of the tectonic fracturing of the crust in the Lai Chau region was established. In this scheme, Lai Chau was identified as a region with low crustal fractures, with the grade of tectonic fracture having a close relationship with landslide occurrence. The factors found to influence landslide occurrence were: topographic slope, topographic aspect, topographic curvature, distance from drainage, lithology, distance from a tectonic fracture and land cover. Landslide prone areas were analyzed and mapped using the landslide occurrence factors employing the probability-likelihood ratio method. The results of the analysis were verified using landslide location data, and these showed a satisfactory agreement between the hazard map and existing landslide location data.
In this study, a gated recurrent unit (GRU) network is constructed based on a deep neural network (DNN) with the aim of restoring the missing daily flow data in river basins. Lai Chau hydrological station is located upstream of the Da river basin (Vietnam) is selected as the target station for this study. Input data of the model are data on observed daily flow for 24 years from 1961 to 1984 (before Hoa Binh dam was built) at 5 hydrological stations, in which 4 gauge stations in the basin downstream and restoring - target station (Lai Chau). The total available data is divided into sections for different purposes. The data set of 23 years (1961-1983) was employed for training and validation purposes, with corresponding rates of 80% for training and 20% for validation respectively. Another data set of one year (1984) was used for the testing purpose to objectively verify the performance and accuracy of the model. Though only a modest amount of input data is required and furthermore the Lai Chau hydrological station is located upstream of the Da River, the calculated results based on the suggested model are in satisfactory agreement with observed data, the Nash - Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) is higher than 95%. The finding of this study illustrated the outstanding performance of the GRU network model in recovering the missing flow data at Lai Chau station. As a result, DNN models, as well as GRU network models, have great potential for application within the field of hydrology and hydraulics.

GPS measurements from Feb. 2002 through Mar. 2004 were used to estimate recent crustal movement across the Lai Chau - Dien Bien fault system in North-West Vietnam. Four GPS campaign data were processed and combined with appropriate constraints using automatic GAMIT/GLOBK run in order to estimate ITRF2000 coordinates, local horizontal velocity and extensive/compressive strain rates. ITRF2000 velocities are consistent with east-southeastward movement of Sundaland i.e. Indochina. Local velocities show not much left-lateral strike-slip of the fault system and derived strain rates are insignificant from zero at $95\%$ confidence.
Background: Recent years have witnessed increasing interest in the high amount of ocotillol-type saponin in Panax vietnamensis, particularly in relation to majonoside R2 (MR2). This unique 3%-5% MR2 content impart Ngoc Linh and Lai Chau ginsengs with unique pharmacological activities. However, in the commercial domain, unauthentic species have infiltrated and significantly hindered access to the authentic, efficacious variety. Thus, suitable analytical techniques for distinguishing authentic Vietnamese ginseng species from others is becoming increasingly crucial. Therefore, MR2 is attracting considerable attention as a target requiring effective management measures. Methods: An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed by producing monoclonal antibodies against MR2 (mAb 16E11). The method was thoroughly validated, and the potential of the immunoassay was confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet spectroscopy. Furthermore, ELISA was applied to the assessment of the MR2 concentrations of various Panax spp., including Korean, American, and Japanese ginsengs. Results and conclusions: An icELISA using mAb 16E11 exhibited linearity between 3.91 and 250 ng/mL of MR2, with detection and quantification limits of 1.53 and 2.50 - 46.6 ng/mL, respectively. Based on this study, the developed icELISA using mAb 16E11 could be a valuable tool for analyzing MR2 level to distinguish authentic Ngoc Linh and Lai Chau ginsengs from unauthentic ones. Furthermore, the analysis of the samples demonstrated that Ngoc Linh and Lai Chau ginsengs exhibit a notably higher MR2 value than all other Panax spp. Thus, MR2 might be their ideal marker compound, and various bioactivities of this species should be explored.

Clerodendrum ervatamioides C. Y. Wu was described in 1977 with its type locality in Yunnan, China. During our floristic investigation in the Muong Nhe Nature Reserve of Vietnam of Dien Bien province and in the Muong Te district of the Lai Chau province, we collected several specimens of Clerodendrum ervatamioides, marking the first record of its occurrence in Vietnam. In this paper, details of the morphological features, distribution, ecology, photo plates, and a table comparing the morphological features with its ally Clerodendrum garrettianum Craib are provided.
Paragonimiasis is a food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by infection with lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus. In Vietnam, research on Paragonimus and paragonimiasis has been conducted in northern and central regions of the country. Using a combination of morphological and molecular methods, 7 Paragonimus species, namely P. heterotremus, P. westermani, P. skrjabini, P. vietnamensis, P. proliferus, P. bangkokenis, and P. harinasutai, have been identified in Vietnam. Of these, the first 3, P. heterotremus, P. westermani, and P. skrjabini, are known to infect humans in other countries. However, in Vietnam, only P. heterotremus, found in some northern provinces, has been shown to infect humans. Even nowadays, local people in some northern provinces, such as Lai Chau and Yen Bai, are still suffering from P. heterotremus infection. In some provinces of central Vietnam, the prevalence and infection intensity of P. westermani metacercariae in freshwater crabs (the second intermediate hosts) are extremely high, but human cases have not been reported. Likewise, although P. skrjabini was found in Thanh Hoa Province, its pathogenicity to humans in Vietnam still remains uncertain. The results of molecular phylogenetic analyses of Vietnamese Paragonimus species provides new insights on the phylogeny and taxonomy of the genus Paragonimus. Comprehensive molecular epidemiological and geobiological studies on the genus in Vietnam and adjacent countries are needed to clarify the biodiversity and public health significance of the lung flukes.

The study aims to determine the influencing factors and their impact on the management of the forest land used for production allotted to peasant households and proposes solutions to improve its management. Secondary data was calculated until the end of 2019 at state agencies. The primary data was collected through 2 steps. To determine the factors influencing forest land management for production, step one involved a survey of 100 households that were given access to forest land. Step 2 involved a survey of 215 households to determine how factors impacted the Likert scale's five levels. The study also used a multivariate regression model and SPSS24.0 software to determine the impact rates of factor groups. The study indicated 43 factors that belong to 11-factor groups affecting the management of forest land for production. The policy and legal factors group is the most influential, with an impact rate of 12.72%, followed by 10 other factor groups with impact rates ranging from 4.08% to 11.74%. The solutions include improving policies and laws, strengthening the dissemination of policies and laws; encouraging investment, completing cadastral work, intensifying inspection, examination, and sanctioning of administrative violations of land, upgrading the infrastructure system, and ensuring enough human resources to manage forest land.

Endophytic fungi are promising sources for the production of podophyllotoxin-an important anticancer compound, replacing depleted medical plants. In this study, the endophytes associated with Dysosma difformis-an ethnomedicinal plant species were isolated to explore novel sources of podophyllotoxin. Fifty-three endophytic fungi were isolated and identified by morphological observation and ITS-based rDNA sequencing, assigning them to 27 genera in 3 divisions. Fusarium was found the most prevalent genus with a colonization frequency of 11.11%, followed by Trametes (9.26%) and Penicillium (7.41%). Phylogenetic trees were constructed for the endophytic fungi community in two collection sites, Ha Giang and Lai Chau, revealing the adaptation of the species to the specific tissues and habitats. Cytotoxic activity of endophytic fungal extracts was investigated on cancer cell lines such as SK-LU-1, HL-60, and HepG2, demonstrating strong anti-cancer activity of six isolates belonging to Penicillium, Trametes, Purpureocillium, Aspergillus, and Ganoderma with IC50 value of lower than 10 ㎍/mL. The presence of podophyllotoxin was indicated in Penicillium, Trametes, Aspergillus and for the first time in Purpureocillium and Ganoderma via high-performance liquid chromatography, which implied them as a potential source of this anticancer compound.
