The biological nutrient removal from domestic wastewater with low C/N ratio is difficult. Therefore, this study was performed to examine effect of operational parameters such as air supply, hydraulic retention time, pH on the nitrogen removal by ammonia stripping and to increase influent C/N ratio without required carbon source. The ammonia stripping system used for the bench-scale experiment in laboratory had a dimension of 15 cm diameter and 150 cm height. The ammonia stripping reactors were classified into two types, type AS I and type AS II, according to there using or not media. Results of the research showed that the T-N removal efficiency of AS I using plastic media is slightly higher than AS II without media. In experimental condition of air supply 30 L/min and pH 12.5, T-N removal efficiencies increased as HRT of ammonia stripping reactor became longer from 8 hr to 36 hr. In experimental condition of HRT 36 hr, it was also found that the T-N removal efficiencies improved through increase of air supply. On the other hand, C/N ratio of wastewater was increased from average 3.9 to 5.4 by ammonia stripping.
This research was conducted at the constructed wetland in Goheung reclaimed land, and water quality components were measured at the 12 points in 15 March 2008 and 10 January 2009, respectively. Temperature, pH, DO, EC and salinity components were measured at the field, and TOC, Cl-, COD, TSS, T-P and TN components were analyzed laboratory. Concentrations of field measured components at inflow points were higher than in constructed wetland. TOC concentration ratio of inflow water to constructed wetland water was higher in January, and Cl concentration ratio of it was higher in March. And, COD concentration ratio of it were 1.37 for March and 1.49 for January, respectively. T-P and T-N concentration ratios of it at inflow points were higher 3 times than in constructed wetland. Constructed wetland attenuated concentration of contaminated components inflow to it. Removal efficiencies of Cl-, T-P and T-N components in inflow water were high at the constructed wetland. removal efficiencies of Cl component were 83% for 1st monitoring and 76% for 2nd monitoring, this removal efficiency be caused by dilution effect of constructed wetland. removal efficiencies of T-P component were 67% for 1st monitoring and 69% for 2nd monitoring, and they of T-N component were 100% for 1st monitoring and 95% for 2nd monitoring. Abnormal removal efficiency of T-N component is caused that nitrogen in inflow water was a little. Removal efficiency of T-P component was higher in January, and T-N component was higher in March. This is caused by environmental difference between growing season and winter.

To study the possibility of agricultural utilization of industrial wastewater sludge, the changes of the substances, such as temperature, pH, inorganic and organic matter, the form of nitrogen, fatty acid and the population number of microorganisms during composting periods were investigated. Temperature and $CO_2$ generation were the highest in the second day of composting peroids, and then were gradually fallen. And they were similar to room temperature after the sixth day of composting periods. C/N ratio was a little increased as time went by. pH value was not changed in early composting periods and then pH had been gradually decreased since it was rapidly increased. It was in the range of 8.7~8.8 in late composting periods. The contents of $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, MgO and Fe were a little increased and that of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ was increased with 62~67% in late in comparing with early composting periods. The contents of ether extracted materials, water soluble polysaccharides, hemicellulose and cellulose were decreased but that of resins and lignin were not changed during composting periods. The contents of total and organic nitrogen were decreased but that of inorganic nitrogen was increased during composting periods. The population number of microorganism during composting periods was too much changed according to the kinds of bulking agents and microorganisms, and the composting periods.

In this study, the removal characteristic of ammonia nitrogen and behavior of nitrogen was investigated using Leclercia adecarboxylata, which was derived from the culture contaminated by ammonia nitrogen of high concentration. The method of ammonia nitrogen removal was not biological nitrification and denitrification but elimination of nutrient salt with internal synthesis of microorganisms which use ammonia nitrogen as substrate. L. adecarboxylata(one of ammonia synthesis microorganisms) was highly activated and showed the most high removal efficiency in free salt condition but the removal efficiency decreased badly in salt concentration of more than 4%. About 80 mg/L of $NH_3-N$ was mostly removed within 20 hours and 500 mg/L of $NH_3-N$ showed less then removal efficiency of 50% because carbon source was not enough. However, ammonium nitrogen concentration was decreased again when the carbon source was inserted additionally thus, ammonium nitrogen removal efficiency by L. adecarboxylata, was related to amount of carbon source. pH decreased from 8.0 to 6.36 according to growth of L. adecarboxylata. Concentration of nitrite nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen did not increase and TKN concentration showed no variation while ammonia nitrogen was removed by L. adecarboxylata. In addition to, when content of protein in organic nitrogen was measured, protein was not detected at the beginning of microorganism synthesis but protein of 193.1 mg/L was detected after 48 hours. Hence, ammonium nitrogen was not decomposed as nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen but synthesized by L. adecarboxylata, which has excellent ability of nitrogen synthesis and can threat ammonia nitrogen of high concentration in wastewater.

The separative preconcentration of trace mercury[Hg(II)] in a water sample was studied by a coprecipitation flotation technique. The trace Hg(II) was precipitated together with Ce(OH)$_3$ by adding 3.0 ml of 0.1M Ce$^{3+}$ solution to 1,000 ml of water sample and adjusting pH to 11.0 with 1.0M NaOH solution. The hydrophobic precipitate[Ce(OH)$_3$-Hg(OH)$_2$], which was formed by adding 2.0 ml of 0.1${\%}$ ethanolic sodium oleate solution, were floated on the surface with an aid of tiny nitrogen gas bubbles. The floated materials were quatitatively collected in a suction flask and dissolved with 5.0 ml of 2.0M HNO$_3$. The solution was marked to 25.00 ml with a deionized water. The content of Hg(II) was determined by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Any interferences of concomitants such as Ag$^+$, Br$^-$, I$^- $, etc. were not observed on the whole procedure. The analytical result showed that Hg(II) found in the wastewater of Seochang Campus, Korea University was 1.98 ng/ml with the relative standard deviation of 3.6${\%}$. And recoveries of Hg(II) in the wastewater into which 1.0 ng/ml and 2.0 ng/ml were added were 95${\%}$ and 91${\%}$, respectively. From such results, this procedure could be concluded to be tolerably accurate and reproducible for the determination of trace mercury in a water sample.

Laboratory scale aerobicfanaerobic biofilm reactor was used for simultaneous and stable removal of organics, N and P components to investigate optimum design and operation parameters and to analyze the microbial distribution and consortium structure of nitrification and denitrification bacteria in aerobic and anaerobic biofilm systems. The biofilm reactor was successfully operated for 143 days to show $COD_{cr},\;BOD_5$, SS removal efficiencies of 88, 88, and 97%, respectively. During the experiment period, almost complete nitrification efficiency of 96% was achieved. Denitrification efficiency was about 45% without addition of any external carbon sources. In case of total phosphorus removal, 74% of the inlet phosphorus was removed. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) results showed that most of the ammonia oxidizing bacteria in the aerobic nitrification zone was found to be Nitrosomonas species while Nitrospira was the representative nitrite oxidizing bacteria. For the denitrification, Rhodobacter, Rhodovulum, Roseebacter and Paracouus were the dominant denitrification bacteria which was 10 to 20% of the total bacteria in numbers.

Recently, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) has been recognized as a core technology of smart water grid, and the relevant market is growing constantly. In this study, we developed all-in-one smart water meter of the AMI system, which was installed on the test-bed to verify both effectiveness and field applicability in office building water usage. Developed 15 mm-diameter smart water meter is a magneto-resistive digital meter, and measures flow rate and water quality parameters (temperature, conductivity) simultaneously. As a result of the water usage analysis by installing six smart water meters on various purposes in office building water usage, the water usage in shower room showed the highest values as the 1,870 L/day and 26.6 liter per capita day (LPCD). But, the water usage in laboratory was irregular, depending on the many variables. From the analysis of the water usage based on day of the week, the water usage on Monday showed the highest value, and tended to decrease toward the weekend. According to the PCA results and multivariate statistical approaches, the shower room (Group 3) and 2 floor man's restroom sink (Group 1-3) have been classified as a separate group, and the others did not show a significant difference in both water use and water quality aspects. From the analysis of water usage measured in this study, the leak or water quality accident did not occur. Consequently, all-in-one smart water meter developed in this study can measure flow rate and water quality parameters (temperature, conductivity) simultaneously with effective field applicability in office building water usage.
Sewage separation which often involves installing a new pipe to separate wastewater flow from stormwater runoff flow can be costly and depends highly on its feasibility in a site. To be able to develop a potentially more economical alternative that can also lessen major road traffic disturbance during this process, a different approach where a smaller sewage separator pipe is installed inside an existing combined sewer pipe was investigated. A small-scale of a box sewer and the proposed sewage separator pipe was constructed in the laboratory to observe and compare the deposition of solids and other solid-associated major pollutants at different flow rates. In addition, three-dimensional flow simulations considering five different scenarios were conducted using Ansys Fluent to observe the effect of the proposed sewage separator pipe to the hydraulic flow if installed inside the combined sewer pipe. Results revealed that the deposition of TSS, TCOD, TN, and TP were reduced by at least 60% when the wastewater was conveyed by the sewage separator pipe instead of the combined sewer pipe. Moreover, the flow simulations conducted showed that there was little to no major disturbance in hydraulic flow and velocity distribution when the sewage separator was installed inside a straight pipe and even at pipe transitions such as intersections, turns, and drop in elevation. Considering the pipe dimensions and the results of the study, the proposed approach can be promising in terms of reduction in pollutant deposition without a major effect on the hydraulic flow. Further investigation and cost-analysis should be done in the future to support these preliminary findings and help alleviate the problems caused by combined sewer overflows by introducing an alternative approach.
In the past decade, considerable progress has been made in developing the appropriate biotechnology for microalgal mass cultivation aimed at establishing a new agro-industry. This review points out the main biological constraints affecting algal biotechnology outdoors and the requirements for making this biotechnology economically viable. One of them is the availability of a wide variety of algal species and improved strains that favorably respond to varying environmental conditions existing outdoors. It is thus just a matter of time and effort before a new methodology like genetic engineering can and will be applied in this field as well. The study of stress physiology and adaptation of microalgae has also an important application in further development of the biotechnology for mass culturing of microalgae. In outdoor cultures, cells are exposed to severe changes in light and temperature much faster than the time scale re-quired for the cells to acclimate. A better understanding of those parameters and the ability to rapidly monitor those conditions will provide the growers with a better knowledge on how to optimize growth and productivity. Induction of accumulation of high value products is associated with stress conditions. Understanding the physiological response may help in providing a better production system for the desired product and, at a later stage, give an insight of the potential for genetic modification of desired strains. The potential use of microalgae as part of a biological system for bioremediation/detoxification and wastewater treatment is also associated with growing the cells under stress conditions. Important developments in monitoring and feedback control of the culture behavior through application of on-line chlorophyll fluorescence technique are in progress. Understanding the process associated with those unique environmental conditions may help in choosing the right culture conditions as well as selecting strains in order to improve the efficiency of the biological process.
This study was carried out to improve the photocatalytic reaction of TiO2 photocatalyst. During the photocatalytic reaction, OH radicals are generated and they have an excellent oxidation capability for wastewater treatment. To evaluate the OH radicals generated according to crystallographic structure of TiO2 nanotubes photocatalyst, a probe compound, 4-Chlorobenzoic acid was monitored to evaluate OH radical. Ultraviolet light was applied for photocatalytic reaction of TiO2. The 4-Chlorobenzoic acid solution was prepared at laboratory. TiO2 nanotube was grown on titanium plate by using anodization method. The annealing temperature for TiO2 nanotube was varied from 400 to 900 ℃ and the crystal forms of the TiO2 nanotube was analyzed. Depending on annealing temperature, TiO2 nanotubes have shown different crystal forms; 100% anatase (0 % rutile), 18.4 % rutile (81.6 % anatase), 36.6 % rutile (63.4 % anatase) and 98.6% rutile (1.4% anatase). As the annealing temperature increases, the rutile ratio increases. OH radical generation from 18.4 % rutile TiO2 nanotube plate was about 3.8 times higher than before annealing and 1.4 times higher than only 100 % anatase-TiO2 nanotube. The efficiency of the 18.4% rutile TiO2 nanotube was the best in comparison to TiO2 nanotube with 18.4 %, 36.6 % and 98.6 % rutile. As a result, photocatalytic ability of 18.4 % rutile-TiO2 nanotube plate was higher than 100 % anatase-TiO2 nanotube plate.
