A total of 629 Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Large White crossbred pigs were utilized in three experiments (Exp. 1, 222 pigs weighing $25.6{\pm}2.0\;kg$ BW; Exp. 2, 216 pigs weighing 5$6.2{\pm}4.3\;kg$ BW; Exp. 3, 191 pigs weighing $86.4{\pm}4.6\;kg$ BW) conducted to determine the effects of fermented potato pulp on performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass traits and plasma parameters in growingfinishing pigs. Each experiment lasted 28 d. The pigs were assigned to one of two corn-soybean meal-based diets containing 0 or 5% fermented potato pulp. The inclusion of fermented potato pulp increased weight gain (p<0.05) in experiments 1 and 2 and increased feed intake (p<0.05) in experiment 2. Feed conversion was improved (p<0.05) in experiment 2 and showed a tendency to improve (p<0.10) in experiments 1 and 3 when pigs were fed fermented potato pulp. Fermented potato pulp increased (p<0.05) dry matter digestibility in experiments 1 and 3 and energy digestibility in experiment 2. Feeding fermented potato pulp decreased plasma urea nitrogen (p<0.05) and alanine aminotransferase (p<0.05) in experiments 1 and 2, while plasma aspartate aminotransferase was decreased (p<0.05) in experiment 3. Dietary fermented potato pulp did not affect the carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. Feeding fermented potato pulp reduced (p<0.05) fecal ammonia concentration in all three experiments. In conclusion, feeding growing-finishing pigs diets containing 5% fermented potato pulp improved weight gain and feed conversion without any detrimental effects on carcass traits. The improvements in pig performance appeared to be mediated by improvements in nutrient digestibility.

The aim of this study was to investigate teachers' perceptions on MBL (microcomputer-based laboratory) experiment training program for teachers, the expecting effects of MBL experiment and application of MBL experiment after conducting MBL experiment training for science classes in schools. This study showed that most of the teachers who participated in the training program thought that the MBL experiment training program was very useful and instructive. Many teachers considered that MBL experiments using a computer could decrease time spent in the experiment by accurate and fast data collection and analysis. They also thought that the reduced time could be used more effectively in the analysis of experimental data and discussion activities leading to correct concept formation as well as in the development of graphical analysis and science process skills. However, they thought that MBL experiments were ineffective in learning how to operate experiment apparatus. This study also revealed that most teachers intended to apply MBL experiments in real classrooms context right after the training course and they pointed out many obstacles in introducing MBL experiments into their classrooms such as a budget to purchase equipment, poor laboratory conditions, and few MBL experiment training opportunities. In order to apply MBL experiment into the real classrooms, further changes were suggested as follows; development of technologies to reduce unit cost of equipment for MBL experiments, production and supply of many kinds of sensors, development of MBL experiment materials, and expansion of the training program for teachers.

The purpose of this study is to investigate laboratory abilities to carry-out experimentations in the field of 'Matter' in middle school science texts. A total of 359 chemistry experiments from 26 textbooks has been analyzed. The authors of this study are interested in what science process skills are required for students to perform the experiments and how often these skills are needed. This article introduced a framework for analyzing the science process skills and their frequency. There are similar patterns of science process skill use among the different grades of middle school texts. The process skills of organizing results, interpreting data and making generalizations are most needed by the order of frequency. However, abilities related to alternative activities and/or conditions show relatively low frequency. For seniors, various laboratory abilities to carry out experiments are needed, whereas abilities for operating and setting up an experimental apparatus are required in freshmen and juniors. These results suggest avenues for science teachers that make lesson plans involving science experiments.
We present an overview on the observation and research for the China seas using both field experiments and multi-sensor satellite data at ORSI/OUC, covering two topics: (1) Spatial and temporal distribution of internal waves in the China Seas and retrieval of internal wave parameters; (2) Retrieval, validation, and cross-comparison of multi-sensor ocean color data as well as ocean optics in situ experiments in the East China Sea. We also present an incoherent Doppler wind lidar, developed by ORSI, and its observation for marine-atmospheric boundary layer.

Mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) has to utilize high optical pump power, for its operation principle is based on a nonlinear optical wavelength conversion. In this paper, a low pump-power operation of MSSI-based chromatic dispersion compensation (CDC) has been achieved successfully, for the first time to our knowledge, by introducing a noise pre-reduction scheme in cascaded wavelength conversions with periodically poled $LiNbO_3$ waveguides at a relatively low operation temperature. As preliminary studies, phase-matching properties and operation-temperature dependence of the wavelength converter (WC) were characterized. The WC pumped at 1549 nm exhibited a wide conversion bandwidth of 59 nm covering the entire C-band and a conversion efficiency of -23.6 dB at 11 dBm pump power. CDC experiments were implemented with 2.5 and 10 Gb/s transmission systems over 100 km single-mode fiber. Although it is well-known that the signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion is not critical at a 2.5 Gb/s transmission, the clear recovery of eye patterns was identified. At 10 Gb/s transmission experiments, eye patterns were retrieved distinctly from seriously distorted ones, and notable improvements in bit-error rates were acquired at a low pump power of 14 dBm.
In this paper, we present a virtual laboratory platform (VLP) baptized Mercury allowing students to make practical work (PW) on different aspects of mobile wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Our choice of WSNs is motivated mainly by the use of real experiments needed in most courses about WSNs. These experiments require an expensive investment and a lot of nodes in the classroom. To illustrate our study, we propose a course related to energy efficient and safe weighted clustering algorithm. This algorithm which is coupled with suitable routing protocols, aims to maintain stable clustering structure, to prevent most routing attacks on sensor networks, to guaranty energy saving in order to extend the lifespan of the network. It also offers a better performance in terms of the number of re-affiliations. The platform presented here aims at showing the feasibility, the flexibility and the reduced cost of such a realization. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms that contribute to the familiarization of the learners in the field of WSNs.

In recent years, there has been an intensive research on decolorization of dye and textile wastewater by various fungal strains. In this study, the decolorization ability of three commercial dyes, acid yellow 99, acid blue 350, and acid red 114, were investigated using 10 fungal strains. Among the fungal strains tested, Trametes versicolor KCTC 16781 completely decolorized all dyes in both solid and liquid experiments, and was also able to decolorize the mixture of those three dyes in liquid experiments. The secretion of the ligninolytic enzymes into the extracellular medium during decolorization by T versicolor KCTC 16781 was also studied. No lignin peroxidase activity was detected, and manganese peroxidase and laccase activities were investigated.

Three experiments were conducted with female Japanese Saanen goats to investigate the effects of rumen protected methionine (RPMet) on N utilization and whole-body protein turnover. Whole-body leucine flux from which whole-body protein turnover rates were derived was measured by primed- continuous infusion of L-[$^{15}N$] leucine in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Throughout the experiments RPMet was added to a diet to supply 1.5 g DL-methionine per goat per day. Irrespective of the major N sources (i.e., protein or urea) in the diet, both N deposition and whole-body protein synthesis were increased (p<0.05), and urinary N excretion was decreased (p<0.05) by supplementing with RPMet, but not by supplementing with methionine. It was concluded, therefore, that under the present experimental conditions, the RPMet supplement was efficiently bypassed to result in enhanced body protein synthesis of the goat.

In order to develop a new variety of rice that adapts to the climate of Aomori prefecture and possesses characteristics suitable for production of high quality Japanese sake, artificial cross experiments were executed between Yamadanishiki, which is widely used nationwide as an authentic variety of rice for sake production, and Hanafubuki, which was peviously developed by Aomori prefecture. An excellent hybrid, named Hanaomoi, was selected and fixed by a series of selection experiments and systematic cultivation. Unpolished Hanaomoi rice contained less amount of protein than Yamadanishiki and Hanafubuki. Unpolished rice of Hanaomoi was harder than Yamadanishiri and Hanafubuki, therefore polishing treatment was done in high yield and one could obtain a high degree of polish on the rice(namely 40% polishing). These features are advantageous to production of high quality of sake.Test brewing using 40% polished Hanaomoi gave rise to a characteristic sake that contained a slightly higher amount of alcohol and flavor components than Yamadanishiki and Hanafubuki. Sensory tests concluded that sake from Hanaomoi was as superior as the one from authentic Yamadanishiki. Hanaomoi is a promising variety of rice suitable for production of a high quality sake exclusive to Aomori prefecture.

This paper investigates the influence of the Circulating Water Channel (CWC) side wall and support struts on the hydrodynamic coefficient prediction for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) experiments. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method has been used to model the CWC tests. The hydrodynamic coefficients estimated by CFD are compared with the prediction of experiments to verify the accuracy of simulations. In order to study the effect of side wall on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the AUV in full scale captive model tests, this paper uses the CWC non-dimensional width parameters to quantify the correlation between the CWC width and hydrodynamic coefficients of the chosen model. The result shows that the hydrodynamic coefficients tend to be constant with the CWC width parameters increasing. Moreover, the side wall has a greater effect than the struts.
