A Study on the Abstraction of Movements Based on Laban's Space Theory "Choreutics" (라반의 공간조화이론 "코레우틱스(Choreutics)"를 활용한 움직임의 추상적 시각화 연구)

  • This paper presents a methodology for creating abstract animation based on the human movement theories originating from the work of dance theorist Rudolf von Laban. Laban Movement Analysis is a method and language for describing, visualizing, interpreting and documenting all varieties of human movement, and Choreutics is based on universal patterns of nature and of human as part of a universal design. Laban defines the space of movements in a profoundly dualistic way. Outwardly, his objective and scientific definitions provide a concrete base for generating human movements in computer graphics in terms of geometric and motion primitives such as points, lines, planes, polygons, linear and nonlinear movements. On the other hand, he also offers a system for understanding the subtle characteristics about the way a movement is dynamically done with respect to inner intention. Laban's interpretations of human motion can be utilized potentially in plastic arts and computer arts. Our work was inspired by those physical and psychological analyses and computer algorithms have been developed for creating abstract animation. We presented our computer animation works entitled "Choreography" in the exhibitions: a special section in "2015 Craft Trend Fair" and "Make Your Movement" held in the Korean Cultural Centre in UK, 2016. In this paper, we describe our ideas and methods for creating abstract object movements based on the Laban's motion representations.

  • The core of Laban Movement Analysis, which is used for academic research purposes, is that the individual's psychological or emotional state through movement is expressed in external motion by internal intention, which is symbolic of internal emotions. In addition, the Laban motion analysis focuses on analyzing the structure of the object of movement and its structure comparatively and analytically with the past or other structures, and the analyzed grammars of the dance ultimately influence each other in psychological, social and cultural aspects 'Relationality' provides clues to be found. It also provides a resource of records in terms of the system implied from the 'momentary nature' of dance, which has educational value as a multidisciplinary research material.

Measuring Tensions of Character Motions based on LMA (LMA를 기반으로 한 캐릭터 동작의 긴장도 측정)

  • In this paper, we propose the method to measure tensions of character motions, using LMA (Laban Movement Analysis). Using tension values, we tan take advantage of them as a standard for synchronization of motion and BGM(Back Ground Music). In LMA, a motion is divided into 4 space-time factors which are called Efforts, and each Effort has two bases opposed to each other. We can analyze the motion by justifying which basis is stronger than the other in each Effort of motion. To measure quantitatively tension values, we propose some equations based on kinematics and dynamics. Then we can measure the tension value by the weighted sum of values calculated from those equations. Each weight can be determined by the optimization process which tries to minimize the difference between the calculated tension value and human's decision. The experimental result shows that the in creasing order of the motion tension value is similar to that of the tension score given by human.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest that the movement expression activity of intellectually disabled people is effective in the learning process of LMA motion recognition based on Kinect sensor. We performed an ICT motion recognition games for intellectually disabled based on movement learning of LMA. The characteristics of the movement through Laban's LMA include the change of time in which movement occurs through the human body that recognizes space and the tension or relaxation of emotion expression. The design and implementation of the motion recognition model will be described, and the possibility of using the proposed motion recognition model is verified through a simple experiment. As a result of the experiment, 24 movement expression activities conducted through 10 learning sessions of 5 participants showed a concordance rate of 53.4% or more of the total average. Learning motion games that appear in response to changes in motion had a good effect on positive learning emotions.   • The Golden Dragon is a work that reminds us of the tragic illusion of globalization through the story of Asian workers' lives in Berlin, a strange city. Also, the post-epic nature of the play requires the audience to see it in a new way, more different than before. In Korea, there are theoretical studies on the post-epic theatre, but there is little research on specific acting approaches based on practical production process. Therefore, I first analyze the post-epic characteristics of The Golden Dragon in order to present specific acting approaches. As a result, it would be confirmed that body-centered acting approaches were required in the post-epic theatre to play more different roles than in the realism play. Thus, Laban movement Analysis(LMA) of Rudolf von Laban is applied so that internal impulses could be naturally induced through the utilization of the body. Of the four categories of motion(BESS), Laban seeks to look at the body-centered acting approaches through the effort. Finally, it must be confirmed through the actual production process that Laban's theory of motion could be used as a body-centered acting approach to creating the role of post-epic theatre.

Segmentation and Transition Techniques for Plausible Dance Motion Generation (자연스러운 춤 동작 생성을 위한 분절화와 전이기법)

  • This paper presents novel segmentation and transition techniques for dancing motion synthesis. The segmentation method for dancing motions is based on Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). We assume a dance sequence as a set of small dancing motions. To segment a dancing motion is a subjective, psychological, and complex problem, so we extract the shape factor of LMA from a dance motion and observe shape's changes to find the boundaries of dance segments. We also introduce a transition method that meets constraints on the feet. This method that is based on a linear interpolation modifies the intermediate posture motion after analyzing footprint positions. The posture could be a key-frame between source motion and target motion on the transition. With the proposed techniques, it would be easy for multimedia applications to generate plausible dance motions.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the meaningfulness and the possibility of developing kinetic narrative educational contents based on English literature with convergent approaches. To accomplish the objective, this paper examines three areas of research such as kinetic education, English literature education, and total physical response-storytelling method. It introduces the following three stages of development procedure: 1) selecting and analyzing English literature, 2) designing a prototype including the story flow, the movement and the motion interaction design, and 3) constructing motion database using Laban movement analysis. Then, how to apply it to young learners is illustrated with 'the story of the three little pigs,' Finally, implication for the field of young learner English education and English literature is discussed.
