Microstructure and dielectric properties in the La2O3-doped BaTiO3 system (La2O3 첨가에 따른 BaTiO3의 미세구조 및 유전특성)

  • The effect of La2O3 addition on the crystalline phase, microstructure, and dielectric properties of BaTiO3 has been studied as a function of the amounts of La2O3. 0.3 mol% TiO2-excess BaTiO3 powder was synthesized by solid-state reaction, and then the powder compacts with various amounts of La2O3 were sintered at 1250℃ for 2 hours. Room temperature XRD showed changes in the lattice parameters and a decrease of tetragonality (c/a) as the amounts of La2O3 increased. It can be explained that the phase transition from tetragonal to cubic phase occurred because La3+ replaced Ba2+ site, which increased the instability of the tetragonal phase. As La2O3 was added over 0.1 mol%, the critical driving force for growth (Δgc) increased over maximum driving force (Δgmax). As the result, the grain size decreased with La2O3 addition. Dielectric constant decreased as the amounts of La2O3 increased, which was analyzed with crystal structure and microstructure.

  • The variations of the properties of Sr and Mg added $LaGaO_3$ system electrolyte with the amount of the additive and the sintering condition were studied. Main phase was (La$_{1-x}Sr_x)(Ga_{1-y}Mg_y)O_{3-\delta}$ phase for each compositions and the single phases $(La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15})(Ga_{0.85}Mg_{0.15})O_{3-\delta},(La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15})(Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})O_{3-\delta}$ and $(La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2})(Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})O{3-\delta}$ were obtained with the decrease in the sintering temperature and Mg addition. Thermal expansion coefficient of the $(La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2})(Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})O_{3-\delta}$ decreased with the increase in the sintering temperature. Electric conductivity of electrolyte sintered at $1500^{circ}C$ for 1h was 0.14 S/cm at $800^{circ}C$ with 1 mA.

Development of Pd/TiO2 Catalysts with La2O3 Addition and Study on the Performance Improvement of H2 Oxidation at Room Temperature (La2O3가 첨가된 Pd/TiO2 촉매의 개발 및 H2 상온산화 반응에서의 성능 향상 연구)

  • In this study, a Pd/TiO2 catalyst which oxidized H2 at room temperature without an additional energy source was prepared. And a specific surface area of TiO2 as a support was not proportional to H2 oxidation reaction performance of Pd/TiO2 catalyst. In addition La2O3 was added to Pd/TiO2 catalyst in order to evaluate the performance effect due to the change of catalysts physical properties. A Pd/La2O3-TiO2 was prepared by adding different amounts of La2O3 to TiO2 and CO chemisorption analysis was performed. Compared to the conversion rate (14% at 0.5% H2) of the Pd/TiO2(G) catalyst, the Pd/La2O3-TiO2 catalyst showed 74% which was improved by more than five times. It was found that the larger the metal dispersion of Pd as an active metal is, the more favorable to H2 oxidation reaction is. However, when the added La2O3 amount exceeded 10%, the catalyst performance decreased again. Finally, it was concluded that the physical properties of the Pd/La2O3-TiO2 catalyst have a dominant influence on the catalytic activity until 0.3~0.5% of injected H2 concentrations and the catalyst reaction rate was controlled by substance transfer from 1% or more concentrations of H2.

Microstructural Properties of (Pb)(La,Ce)$TiO_3$ ceramics as a function of $MnO_2$ addition ($MnO_2$ 첨가에 따른 (Pb)(La,Ce)$TiO_3$ 세라믹스의 미세구조특성)

  • In this study, microstructural and dielectric properties of $Pb_{0.83}(La_{0.2}Ce_{0.8})_{0.08}TiO_3$(PCT) ceramics as a function of $MnO_2$ addition were investigated for 30MHz ceramic resonator application. Grain size was gradually increased according to the increase of $MnO_2$ addition amount and showed the highest value of $1.502{\mu}m$ at the 0.9wt% $MnO_2$. Moreover, density showed the highest value of $7.582 g/cm^3$ at the 0.7wt% $MnO_2$.All the composition ceramics,curie temperature was nearly constant around $330^{\circ}C$

  • The electrochemical properties of W-modified austenitic stainless steels containing Ta and La were evaluated in a $H_{3}PO_{4}$ type PEMFC environment. Electrochemical test was conducted in 0.05 M $H_{3}PO_{4}$ solution at $80^{\circ}C$ and electrical property was conducted by contact resistance test. XPS was conducted to analyze the chemical elements consisting of passive film. Addition of La and Ta in W-modified austenitic stainless steel shows not only better corrosion resistance but also better electrical property.

  • Effects of $La_2O_3$, $MnO_2$ on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of $0.02Pb(Y_{2/3}W_{1/3}O_3-0.98Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ system were investigated. The addition of La2O3 to the system enhanced electromechanical coupling factor (kp), piezoelectric constant (d33), but hardly changed mechanical quality factor (Qm). On the other hand, the addition of $MnO_2$ increased Qm significantly, but did not degrade kp and d33 so much. The piezoelectric properties of $0.02Pb(Y_{2/3}W_{1/3}O_3-0.98Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ containing 0.1wt% $La_2O_3$, 0.4wt% $MnO_2$ were very good and kp, d33, Qm were 55%, 350$\times$10-12C/N, 780, respectively. The size of the grains was proportional to the change of c/a (tetragonality) ratio caused by the addition of $La_2O_3$ and $MnO_2$, and dielectric, piezoelectric properties were sensitive to the amountof pyrochrole phase.

  • To secure the mechanical strength of porous Al2O3 ceramics, which can be utilized for filters and catalyst supports is essential for their functionality and durability. Superior mechanical strength would be obtained by tailoring the densification and grain growth during sintering. This study deals with grain growth behavior of a freeze-casted Al2O3 with addition of La2O3. In a temperature range between 1400 and 1600℃, variations of average grain size with sintering time and temperature were observed and analyzed with Gtn-G0n = kt and with k = k0exp(-Ea/RT). As a result, n value and activation energy (Ea) for grain growth were calculated as 3 and 489.09 kJ/mol, respectively. These commonly confirms retardation effect of the La addition during sintering of Al2O3 porous structure. More accurate analysis on the La effect can be followed to provide useful guidance for the selection of additives for better mechanical strength in Al2O3 porous structures.

  • In this study, we examined the effect of NO addition on the ozone-induced soot oxidation activity of $LaMnO_3$ perovskite catalysts. The addition of 10~20% NO ($NO_2$) with respect to the concentration of ozone effectively enhanced the rate of ozone-induced soot oxidation rate over $LaMnO_3$. However, the excessive addition of NO ($NO_2$) was detrimental to ozone-induced soot oxidation activity. It is supposed nitrogen oxides would adsorb on the catalyst and then react with carbon-oxygen species developed on soot surface, but an excessive addition of nitrogen oxide would inhibit the formation of carbon-oxygen species, which is a key intermediate in the reaction, and consequently suppress the oxidation rate of soot.

Effect of Levulinic Acid on the Production of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) by Ralstonia eutropha KHB-8862

  • The influence of levulinic acid (LA) on the production of copolyester consisting of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) and 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV) by Ralstonia eutropha was investigated. Addition of LA into the culture medium greatly increased the molar fraction of 3HV in the copolyester, indicating that LA can be utilized as a precursor of 3HV. In shake flask culture, the 3HV content in the copolyester increased from 7 to 75 mol% by adding 0.5 to 4.0 g/L LA to the medium containing fructose syrup as a main carbon source. A maximal copolyester concentration of 3.6 g/L (69% of dry cell weight) was achieved with a 3HV content of 40 mo1% in a jar fermentor culture containing 4.0 g/L of LA. When LA (total concentration, 4 g/L) was added repeatedly into a fermentor culture to maintain its concentration at a low level, the copolyester content and the 3HV yield from LA reached up to 85% of dry cell weight and 5.0 g/g, respectively, which were significantly higher than those when the same concentration of the LA was supplied al1 at once. The present results indicated that LA is more effective than propionate or valerate as a cosubstrate fur the production of copolyesters with varying molar fractions of 3HV by R. eutropha.

La2O3 Addition Influence on Electrical Characteristics of Pr6O11-based ZnO Varistors

  • The microstructure and electrical properties of the varistors, which are composed of $ZnO-Pr_6O_{11}-CoO-Cr_2O_3-La_2O_3-based$ ceramics, were investigated for different $La_2O_3$ contents. The increase of $La_2O_3$ content led to more densified ceramics, whereas abruptly decreased the nonlinear properties by incorporating beyond 1.0 mol%. The highest nonlinearity was obtained from 0.5 mol% $La_2O_3$, with the nonlinear coefficient of 81.6 and the leakage current of $0.2{\mu}A$. The increase of sintering time and temperature greatly decreased the nonlinear properties. As the $La_2O_3$ content increased, the donor density increased from $0.64\times10^{18}/cm^3\;to\;16.89\times10^{18}/cm^3$ and the barrier height greatly decreased with increasing $La_2O_3$ content, reaching a maximum (1.47 eV) in 0.5 mol% $La_2O_3$.
