  • A new grouting material named 3S is developed that can be used effectively for reinforcing cut surface of weathered rock in processing of tunneling. The new material is composed of mostly micro slag cement and general Portland cement, but the material is foundered again upto $8,000\;cm^2/g$ of specific area so that it can be easily infiltrated in to the ground. For verifying technical and engineering quality of the material several laboratory tests with specially designed test apparatus were performed including compression tests, infiltration tests and resonant column tests. It was verified that the newly developed grouting material at early age of 1 or 3 days generates 200~1500% higher compressive strength and 400~560% larger elastic modulus than those of the LW(LW-1) or micro-cement(LW-2) grouting materials in the market. In addition, the new 3S grouting material could be so easily infiltrated into the model ground in the lab tests that it produces 4 times larger grouted roots in average compared to the usual water glass type grouting material(LW-1). Thus, it can be said that the newly developed grouting material can effectively prevent inflow water into tunnel compared to LW grouting materials.

  • As grouting materials for ground improvement, silicate materials such as water glass, silica-sol and so forth are used worldwide. However, they may pollute underground water. In this study, fish poison test(Korean standard industrial code KS M 0111) which estimates toxicity for fish is applied to evaluate the toxic effect by grouting materials. From the test result of the sample made of LW, LC50(Median Lethal Concentration) reaches within 24 hours. In case of the silica-sol, it does not even in 96 hours. Therefore, we can conclude that the sililca-sol grouting method is more free from the danger of underground water pollution. From the result that the mortality of fish under the condition of pH 8.6 is 0% within 96 hours, the groundwater can be saved by controlling pH below 8.6 for the grouting in the field.

  • The purpose of this study is to present criteria of selection of optimum grout materials through analyzing the limitation of permeability of each materials(MSG-N, OPC), in various ground conditions by comparing presentation of strength and permeability of MSG method and LW method(or SGR method). To do that, physical and chemical characteristics of grout materials were analyzed and compressive tests of homogel, mixed coagulation materials and hardening materials in certain mixing ratio, and of milk paste. In addition, permeability tests for each ground soil, each injection pressure, and each materials in combined stratum were performed with massive chamber. The results of tests showed that ultra fine grout materials like grout of MSG is necessary to construct effective grouting in sand and silty sand ground. Also, it is expected to become chemical grouting guide data to layout construction engineers because presented proper injection pressure by kind of object ground in case using ultra-fine grout material.

  • This study was intended to evaluate the improved strength of the ground by applying the bio grouting method to a loose sandy ground. The injection material was prepared in the form of cement-like powder, with the bio injection material produced by microbial reactions. The grouting test was conducted under the conditions similar to the field where the bio injection material can be applied. In addition, the injection materials (cement and sodium silicate No. 3) used for Labile Waterglass (LW) method and the conventional grouting methodwere prepared through a two-solution one-step process. The injection into the specimens was done at a pressure of 150 kPa and then, with a bender element, their moduliof elasticity were measured on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th curingdays to analyze their strengths according to the duration of curing. It was confirmed that in all injection materials the moduli of elasticity increased over time. In particular, when 30% of the bio injection material was added to 100% cement, the modulus of elasticity tended to increase by about 15%. This confirmed that the applicability became higher when the bio injection material was used in place of the conventional sodium silicate.

  • In excavation of tunnels especially located in shallow depth, it is not rare to meet geological change in excavation progress worse than expected in the initial design stage. This paper present a case study on the re-design of excavation and support system of a shallow tunnel under construction where it meets the unexpected bad geological condition during excavation. The detailed geological investigation shows that the rock mass is heavily weathered and fractured with RMR value less than 20. Considering this geological condition, the design concept is focused on the reinforcement of the ground preceding the excavation of tunnel. Two design patterns, LW-grouting & forepoling with pilot tunnelling method and the steel pipe reinforced grouting method, are suggested. Numerical analysis by FLAC shows that these two patterns give the tunnel and roof ground stable in excavation process while the original design causes severe failure zone around the tunnel and floor heaving. In point of the mechanical stability and the degree of construction, the steel pipe reinforced grouting technique proved to be good for the reinforcement of heavily fractured rock mass in tunnelling. This assessment and design process would be a guide in the construction of tunnels in heavily weathered and fractured rock mass situation.

  • In this study, strength and durability of a geo-polymer grout material(HIT) was investigated through unconfined compression strength tests(UCS)), scanning electron microscope(SEM), elution tests, and surface observations. UCS tests showed high initial strength and rapid continuous strength increments when compared to labile wasser glass(LW) and space grouting rocket system (SGR) grout materials, which showed strength reduction after 28 days. The higher strength was also reflected in SEM results which showed calcium silicate hydroxide(C-S-H) gels of the dense hydrate range, indicating higher strength and durability. Additionally, elution tests and grout surface observations showed HIT was in good condition and the decrease in weight was minor when under water for six months. LW and SGR showed the grout surface to be constricted and lower durability due to higher weight increase. These results and observations show HIT to be better suited for coastal structural applications than LW and SGR in long terms of strength and durability.

  • In grouting, the LW method is commonly employed to induce the gelation of cementitious material using water glass, thereby restricting the extent of material injection. Nevertheless, challenges manifest when materials are lost before gelation, particularly in regions with high groundwater flow rates or significant subsurface voids. This study developed a thixotropic grout material using LFS and GGBFS to mitigate material loss during injection, with an assessment of its flow characteristics, durability in marine exposure, strength, and injection properties. The outcomes revealed that the thixotropic grout material exhibited flow ranging from 105 to 143 mm and enhanced strength and durability compared to the LW method. Furthermore, field tests substantiated that applying vibration and impact improved impermeability.

  • The engineering characteristics of synthetic polymer-silica sol, which has the effect of reducing leakage, was evaluate and compared with typical grouting material, the water glass-based SGR injection material in this study. The result of the laboratory tests on strength and durability about the synthetic polymer-silica sol showed more than twice as high as LW-based injection materials in uniaxial compressive strength, significantly lower values in shrinkage rate and permeability. The result of pH was less than 8.5 (the drinking water quality standard). As a result of the leaching test, the Na2O elution amount of the synthetic polymer-silica sol was measured to be 3 to 4 times smaller than that of the water glass grout. These results be assumed that the synthetic polymer-silica sol has better durability and permeability than those of the typical water glass-based grout.
