The vibration of a LP turbine case may cause the failure of power generation and reduce the life of its facility. In this study we carried out on-site measurements of a LP turbine in order to find the cause of the vibration and conducted experimental and numerical modal analysis of the turbine case with its support frame. The measurement and the modal analysis show that the natural frequency of the turbine becomes close to 60 Hz due to the subsidence of the support. The elimination of the subsidence by shimming between the turbine and the support frame gave rise to the reduction of the vibration of the LP turbine case.

Exhaust system of steam turbines consists of an annular diffuser and a collector and connects the last stage turbine and the condenser. The system is used to transfer the turbine leaving kinetic energy to potential energy while guiding the flow from turbine exit plane to the downstream condenser. In the steam turbine exhaust system, distorted pressure profile is arisen by the nonaxisymmetric collector structure at the diffuser outlet, and this distorted pressure is propagated to the last stage LP turbine exit plane through the diffuser, then the last stage LP turbine experiences asymmetric back pressure. It is known that the pressure recovery performance of diffuser is strongly influenced by diffuser inflow condition. In this study, the effect of exhaust system due to the changing of inlet flow condition is observed by using CFD, and the interaction of last stage LP turbine and exhaust system is investigated by using actuator disk model as modeling of turbine blade row of exhaust hood inlet.

CFD analysis has been performed to investigate flow behavior in LP exhaust hood of steam turbines and evaluate exhaust loss, which is directly related to the steam turbine performance, in it. Development of the optimum shape of LP exhaust hood has been done with an improved shape of steam guide, which plays a key role in terms of cost as well as performance. The newly developed LP exhaust hood will be applied for a large USC steam turbine having a capacity of 1,000 MW.

The main purpose of this study is to identify the vibrational characteristics for the LP blades of Korean standard fossil power plants. Modal tests for the 6 stage blade with boundary condition in which the root of blades are constrained with the disk were conducted, and FE analysis was also did with the same boundary condition. The steady-stress and modal analyses for the coupled bladed-disk system of LP turbine stages were completed. The dynamic analysis and fatigue analysis were followed to diagnose the integrity of LP turbine blades.
As absorption type heat pump for waste heat recovery is installed in combined cycle power plant for Energy Service Company, performance test is implemented to confirm the operation data on partial load. The operation data changes according to the heat pump operation on partial load are as follows. Total heat output increases, because waste heat of closed cooling water and a portion of LP steam from HRSG is supplied. But electric power output of steam turbine is reduced, because LP steam to steam turbine is reduced. And heat output from HP district heater and LP district heater is reduced, because HP turbine exhaust steam to HP district heater and LP district heater is reduced. On partial load operation, turbine output reduction is higher than the base load operation. Therefore, on partial load, heat pump should be operated in consideration of the heat output increase and electric power output reduction.

High vibration of a low pressure (LP) turbine casing caused safety problems and life at the facility it was housed in. The main focus of this study was the cause of the high vibration in a low pressure turbine casing with manufacturing defects by frequency response analysis, compared with the results of experiments. Therefore, excited accelerations were obtained from the LP casing fundamental, and frequency responses were analyzed. The measurement and the modal analysis showed that the natural frequency of the LP turbine casing was 61.26 Hz and the excited frequency of the turbine rotor was 60.25 Hz. The manufacturing defect caused a decrease in the casing natural frequency and resulted in the high vibration of the casing because it moved close to the resonant frequency.

The nuclear power plant's turbine-generator system had been suffered form some problems, such as high shaft vibration, generator casing crack, stator coil water leakage, high $H_2$ gas consumption rate. Those kinds of problems were related to high vibration. So nuclear plant decided to replace generator in order to reduce rotor high vibration and high thermal sensitivity. A series of effort to reduce turbine-generator vibration was carried out as followings, first of all, replacement of generator, analysis of turbine-generator vibration, LP B rotor shop balancing, improvement of LP B/Gen coupling run-out, improvement of Generator basement and field balancing. Finally the nuclear turbine-generator's shaft vibration was reduced below $60{\mu}m$ from over $200{\mu}m$ which is very excellent vibration in nuclear turbine-generator in Korea.

Fracture phenomenon has been reported on blades, rotors, connections and rotor discs of LP turbines of nuclear power plants, which is caused by fatigue, stress corrosion and erosion. In this study, as a tool of reliability evaluation, a number of stress and fracture analyses were performed on the defected area under various operating conditions using the finite element method. Possible defects on key-way and rotor disc were assumed to be two-dimensional cracks and centrifugal force, temperature distribution and shrink-fit effect were included as external loads. From stress analysis results, stress intensity factors were obtained and these values can be utilized to evaluate reliability and predict remaining lifetime of the turbine discs.

A steam turbine blade is one of the core parts in a power plant. It transforms steam energy into mechanical energy. It is installed on the rim of a rotor disk. Many failure cases have been reported at the final stage blades of a low-pressure (LP) turbine that is cyclically loaded by centrifugal force because of the repeated startups of the turbine. Therefore, to ensure the safety of an LP steam turbine blade, it is necessary to investigate the fatigue strength and life. In this study, the low cycle fatigue life of an LP steam turbine blade is evaluated based on actual damage analysis. To determine the crack initiation life of the final stage of a steam turbine, Neuber's rule is applied to elastic stresses by the finite element method to calculate the true strain amplitude. It is observed that the expected life and actual number of starts/stops of the blade were well matched.
