  • In this paper, the governing equation and the boundary conditions of deploying rods are derived by using Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin method using the comparison function of the instantaneous natural modes is adopted by which the governing equation is discretized. Based on the discretized equations, the time integration analysis is performed and the longitudinal vibrations for the deploying and the retrieving velocity are analyzed.

  • This study was performed to improve the evaluation of the longitudinal roughness index for various profilometers at airport runway. Especially, a laser type of profilemeter subjected to the longitudinal roughness index has been focused. The test result show that a new type of profile index, IRI(International roughness index) resulted from a laser type of profilometer was profitable for airport runway etc.. The present study provides useful results for the improvement of evaluation of the conventional profile index.

  • Support vector quantile regression (SVQR) is capable of providing more complete description of the linear and nonlinear relationships among response and input variables. In this paper we propose a weighted SVQR for the longitudinal data. Furthermore, we introduce the generalized approximate cross validation function to select the hyperparameters which affect the performance of SVQR. Experimental results are the presented, which illustrate the performance of the proposed SVQR.

  • When the static load is applied to the ship's hull the deflection due to the bending moment from longitudinal direction has not been considered in the usual calculation of maximum bending moment. In fact, however, the deflection of ship's hull must be affected by the above-stated bending moment, and in this case the value of the maximum bending moment would be lessened in comparision with the result of usual calculation. In this paper, the author at first calculated the difference between the two values in case of rectangular barge, and suggested a practical criterion of longitudinal strength.

  • A soldering process with longitudinal ultrasonic is conducted in this work using the Au bump and substrate. Localized heating of the solder is achieved and the stirring action due to the ultrasonic is found to influence the bond strength and microstructure of the eutectic solder The acceptable bonding condition is determined from the tensile strength. Since the multiple bonds can be formed simultaneously with localized heating, the proposed ultrasonic soldering method appears to be applicable to the high-density electronic package.

  • Longitudinal vibration of an axially moving material is investigated by using the assumed modes method. To circumvent a difficulty in choosing the comparison functions which satisfy the boundary conditions, the assumed modes method is adopted by which equations of motion are discretized. Based on the discretized equations, the complex eigenvalue problem is solved and then the effects of the translating velocity on the natural frequencies and modes are analyzed.

  • This paper presents EHL analysis for rough surfaces with directional roughness. Three different types of surfaces with pure longitudinal roughness, pure transversal roughness and isotropic roughness are generated. For the surfaces with longitudinal and transversal roughness, two cases are analyzed; one is a case of asperity peak on a spherical contact center, the other one is of valley on a spherical contact center. As a results, the surface with pure transversal roughness gives higher pressure and smaller minimum film thickness than the surface with pure longitudinal roughness, and the surface with isotropic roughness has similar EHL behavior with the surface with pure transversal roughness.

  • In longitudinal studies, outcomes are repeatedly measured over time for each subject. It is common to have missing values or dropouts for longitudinal data. In this study time trend in longitudinal data with dropouts is of concern. The confounding of time trend with dropout process is investigated through simulation studies. Some simulation results are reported for binary responses as well as continuous responses with patterns of dropouts varying. It has been found that time trend is not confounded with random dropout process for binary responses when it is estimated using GEE.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate effective stiffness of circular reinforced bridge columns and to provide reasonable effective stiffness equations for seismic design to the current Korean Bridge Design Standard. The material nonlinear analysis was conducted for 5184 columns of which variables were the concrete compressive stress, the steel yielding stress, the longitudinal steel location parameter, the longitudinal steel ratio, the axial load level, and the diameter of section. The current Korean Bridge Design Standard generally used the gross section stiffness because of unclear provision, it may be non-conservative because of being evaluated greater design seismic force and less design displacement than those of the abroad provision. Therefore, the proposed effective stiffness equations include three variables such as : the longitudinal steel location parameter, the longitudinal steel ratio, and the axial load ratio. Two equations of effective stiffness are proposed which may be used for earthquake force estimation and for earthquake displacement estimation, respectively.

  • It is known that lap splice in the longitudinal reinforcement of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge columns is not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were practically located in the potential plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets, and to develop appropriate limited ductility design concept in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine test specimens in the aspect ratio of 4 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splice. Quasi-static test was conducted in a displacement-controlled way under three different axial load levels. A significant reduction of displacement ductility ratios was observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal steels.
