  • A gene for cellulolytic xylanase of Bacillus circulnns ATCC21365 was cloned on pUC 19 in Eschwichia coli. The recombinant plasniid pXLI80 contained an 1.8 id, inselt composed of0.5 kb and 1.3 kb PslI fragments derived from B, circulans. The 0.5 kh fragment in the upstream region of 1.3 kb one was confirmed lo be indispensable for not only expression but also hyperexpression of the cloned gene. The transformant overproduced the xylanase 135 times greater than that produced by the orlginal B circulnns. The optimum pH and temperature of the cloned enzyme we]-e pH 5.2 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. Heal pretl-eatment at TEX>$55^{\circ}C$C for 1 Indid not cause inhibition of the activity of this enzyme. The elm.ynie could hydl-olyre CMC and lichenan as well as xylan to produce xylose(or GI), xylohiose(or G2) and xylolnose(or G3) as inah products. Hence We defined the cloned enzyme as a cellulolytic xylanase. The SDS-PAG electrophoretic mobility and zyiiogram of this enzyme derived from whole cell extracts or c~~lture supematants or E. coli(pXL180) indicated a molecular weight of 45,000 and nonprocessing of the enzyme in the peilplasln of E. coli.

  • Copper ions were adsorbed on amorphous Si films by spincoating of Cu solutions and were employed as surface nucleation sites for low-temperature crystallization. The crystallization temperature can bc lo~vered down to $500^{\circ}C$ and rhe crystallization time can be shortened by Cu adsorption. The Cu-adsorbed amorphous films were crystallized by fractal growth with the shape of tree branches. The fractal size ranged from $30 to 300{\mu}m$, depending on the Cu solution concentration. The fractals consisted of f e a t h e r like elliptical grains with the size of $0.3~0.4{\mu}m$. which was comparable to that of the intrinsic films crystallized at $600^{\circ}C$. Both the nucleation activation energy and grotvth activation energy decreased as the Cu concentration in the solution increased. The results suggest thcit the adsorbed Cu increases preferred nucleation sites at the surface and enhmces crystallization by reducing thc activation energies of nucleation and growth.

  • Our laboratoy has been participated in Proficiency Analytical Testing (PAT) program which is operated by the Americal Industrial Hygiene Association in cooperation with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The program is designed to assist a laboratory improve its analytical performance by providing samples on a quarterly basis, evaluating the results, and providing reports on how well the laboratory performed. Evaluation of the results reported here covers five rounds of the PAT program (round 121~round 125). The way a laboratory is evaluated by PAT program is as follows: 1) There is no overall proficiency rating given to a laboratory. 2) A proficiency rating is given for each type of analyze (i.e., metals, silica, asbestos, solvents) that a laboratory analyzed. 3) Proficiency is rated acceptable ("A") if Z score lies between -3 and +3, and unacceptable if Z score is either higher than +3 ("H") or lower than -3 ("Lo"). Z score = (reported data - reference value) / standard deviation 4) For a laboratory to be rated proficient it must either have had no outliers over the most recent two rounds or of the samples actually analyzed over the past year (past four rounds), 75 % or more of the analyze sample results must be acceptable. According to the above rating criteria of PAT program, performance of metals including cadmium, lead, chromium and zinc, and asbestos sample analyses were rated acceptable ("A"). For silica analyses, all samples except one out of four samples in round 122 was rated high("H") were acceptable showing 95 % of ing 95 % of acceptance rate (19/20) throughout the rounds. Analyses of organic solvents were done on 52 samples in 9 types including methanol(MOH), 1,1,1-trichloroethane(MCM), tetrachloroethylene(PCE), trichloroethylene(TCE), benzene(BNZ), o-xylene(OXY), toluene(TOL), chloroform(CFM), 1,2-dichloroethane(DCE). All samples analyzed were rated acceptable except 2 samples that were rated high; one out of each four MCM and TCE samples in round 121, and one that was low out of four o-xylene analyses in round 122 indicating 94 % of acceptance rate(49/52) throughout the rounds. According to the laboratory rating criteria, our laboratory is rated proficient so far for all types of contaminants.

  • Purpose: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy (SLNB) is widely accepted for staging of melanoma patients. It has been shown that clinico-pathological features such as Breslow thickness, ulceration, age, and sex are better predictors of relapse and survival than SLN status alone. The aims of this study were to evaluate the long-term (10-year) prognostic impact of SLNB and to determine predictive factors associated with SLN metastasis, relapse, and melanoma specific mortality (MSM). Methods: This was a prospective observational study on 289 consecutive patients with primary cutaneous melanoma who underwent SLNB from January 2000 to December 2007, and followed until January 2014, at an Italian academic hospital. Results: SLN was positive in 64 patients (22.1%). The median follow-up was 116 months (79-147 months). Tenyear disease-free survival and melanoma specific survival were poor in patients with positive SLN (58.7% and 66.4%, respectively). Only the increasing Breslow thickness resulted independently associated to an increased risk of SLN metastasis. Cox regression analysis showed that a Breslow thickness >2 mm was an independent predictor of relapse, and male sex and Breslow thickness >2 mm was a predictor of MSM. At 10 years, SLN metastasis was not significantly associated to either relapse or MSM. Conclusion: After the fifth year of follow-up, SLN metastasis is not an independent predictive factor of relapse or mortality which are mainly influenced by the characteristics of the primary tumor and of the patient. Patients with a Breslow thickness >2 mm regardless of the SLN status should be considered at high risk for 10-year relapse and mortality.

  • Based on the analysis of congestion conditions in small cities with a population of less than 500,000 in Chungcheong Province, this study conducted a feasibility study on the scope of congestion improvement projects. Further, traffic congestion management standards were further established by analyzing LOS as well as the speed of traffic presented by congestion criteria in the existing Project. According to the analysis according to the congestion management standard LOS suggested in this study, Asan city has the most major number of highways where LOS E occurs for more than 3 hours, followed by Sejong City and Gongju City. In addition, when comparing the ratio of the busy main roads according to the frequency of LOS E by city size, it was analyzed that the ratio and extension of the busy highways relative to the overall extension of the large Chungcheong area are similar to the ratio in small cities in the Chungcheong region. Therefore, traffic congestion occurred in small cities and the feasibility of the improvement project was revealed.

  • In secret communication, steganography is the sending and receiving of secret messages without being recognized by a third party. In the spatial domain method bitwise information is inserted into the virtual bit plane of the decomposed pixel values of the image. That is, the bitwise secret message is sequentially inserted into the least significant bit(LSB) of the image, which is a cover medium. In terms of application, the LSB is simple, but has a drawback that can be easily detected by a third party. If the upper bit plane is used to increase security, the image quality may deteriorate. In this paper, I present a method for concealing Hangul secret messages in image steganography based on the lo-th bit plane and the decomposition of modified pixel intensity values. After decomposing the Hangeul message to be hidden into choseong, jungseong and jongseong, then a shuffling process is applied to increase confidentiality and robustness. PSNR was used to confirm the efficiency of the proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed technique has a smaller effect in terms of image quality than the method applying BCD and Fibonacci when inserting a secret message in the upper bit plane. When compared with the reference value, it was confirmed that the PSNR value of the proposed method was appropriate.

  • In Korea, interest in truck platooning is increasing because most cargo transportation is done by road. Truck platooning is the operation of two or more trucks in a row to form one platoon, which can increase road capacity and improve fuel efficiency. In this study, to analyze the effect of truck platooning on traffic flow, scenarios were created according to traffic conditions and truck platooning operating conditions. In order to understand the effect of the truck platooning operating conditions, correlation analysis was conducted with the average travel speed, the number of lane change disturbance, and the number of disturbance in the entry/exit section. As a result, the number of trucks in the platoon, the spacing of trucks in the platoon, and the spacing between platoons were found to have an effect on the average speed and the number of lane change disturbance In addition, the truck platooning ratio was found to have a strong correlation with the average travel speed and the number of lane change disturbance regardless of the LOS.

  • In May 2010, Indonesia and Norway signed a Letter of Intent on "Cooperation on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation(REDD)." In the LoI, Norway agreed to offer Indonesia a sum of USD 1 billion with a view to encourage Indonesia to significantly contribute to the successful implementation of REDD+. On 20 May 2011, correspondingly, Indonesia announced the 2011 'Forest Moratorium' (the Presidential Instruction No. 10/2011) which was valid for the following consecutive two years. By means of the 2011 'Forest Moratorium', Indonesia aimed at significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation, forest degradation and peatland conversion. In so doing, it also sought to improve forest governance. Meanwhile, concerned stakeholders also raised various questions about the effectiveness of the 'Forest Moratorium'. As an extension of the 2011 'Forest Moratorium', Indonesia announced the 2013 'Forest Moratorium'(the Presidential Instruction No. 6/2013) for another two-year period on 13 May 2013. Indonesia's 'Forest Moratorium' is concerned with stakeholders at various levels, who may play a role of significant 'agent' in the process of implementing the 'Forest Moratorium'. This mechanism of the 'Forest Moratorium' should be understood in the light of forest governance. Employing stakeholder approach, therefore, this article attempts to analyze Indonesia's 'Forest Moratorium' in the light of forest governance. In this regard, it analyzes the detailed contents of the 'Forest Moratorium', the process of making the 'Forest Moratorium', current development of the Indicative Moratorium Map for suspension of new concessions on forest land, and contesting views of various stakeholders. At the same time, it also talks about how 'weak' forest governance had influence upon Indonesia's 'Forest Moratorium'. In so doing, this article consequently attempts to evaluate Indonesia's 'Forest Moratorium' and also put it into perspective in terms of improving forest governance. The 2013 'Forest Moratorium' fundamentally represents a radical policy that is designed to suspend new concessions on forest conversion for another two-year period and its detailed contents attempt to reflect on various stakeholders from related industries and environmental NGOs. However, there are challenging factors in the process of implementing the 'Forest Moratorium', that is, 'weak' forest governance and also a discrepancy between forest planning maps designated by central and regional governments. The announcement of the 2013 'Forest Moratorium', as an extension of the 2011 'Forest Moratorium', may functionally strengthen and improve Indonesia's forest governance. However, at the same time, there is a practical limit due to the fact that it is merely a Presidential Instruction that lacks legal binding.
