As greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport are increasing, the International Maritime Organization is continuously working to strengthen emission regulations. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel is less advantageous as a point of CO2 reduction due to the methane leakage that occurs during the bunkering and operation of marine engines. In this study, greenhouse gas emissions from an LNG-fueled ship were analyzed from the perspective of the life cycle. The amount ofmethane emission during the bunkering and operation procedures with various boil-off gas (BOG) treatment methods and gas engine specifications was analyzed by dynamic simulation. The results were also compared with those of other liquid fuel engines. As a result, small LNG-fueled ships without a BOG treatment facility emitted 32% more greenhouse gas than ships utilizing marine gas oil or heavy fuel oil. To achieve a greenhouse gas reduction via a BOG treatment method, a gas combustion unit or re-liquefaction system must be mounted, which results in a greenhouse gas reduction effect of about 25% and 30%. As a result of comparing the amount of greenhouse gas generated according to the BOG treatment method used with each tank size from the perspective of the operating cycle with the amounts from using existing marine fuels, the BOG treatment method showed superior effects of greenhouse gas reduction.

Restrictions on the emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter from marine engines are being tightened. Each of these emissions requires different reduction technologies, which are costly and require many pieces of equipment to meet the requirements. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel has a great advantage in reducing harmful emissions emitted from ships. Therefore, the marine engine application of LNG fuel is significantly increasing in new ship buildings. Accordingly, this study analyzed the internal support structure, insulation type, and fuel supply piping system of a 35 m3 International Maritime Organization C type pressurized storage tank of an LNG-fueled ship. Analysis of the heat transfer characteristics revealed that A304L stainless steel has a lower heat flux than A553 nickel steel, but the effect is not significant. The heat flux of pearlite insulation is much lower than that of vacuum insulation. Moreover, the analysis results of the constraint method of the support ring showed no significant difference. A553 steel containing 9% nickel has a higher strength and lower coefficient of thermal expansion than A304L, making it a suitable material for cryogenic containers.
As the oil price is dramatically jumping up, the consumption of LNG is rapidly expanding and the size of LNG carriers becomes bigger. For LNG ships, the application of DF (Dual-Fuel) engines gradually increases because of high efficiency, which alternatively use diesel or BOG (Boil-Off Gas) from cargo tank as a fuel. The surplus BOG from LNG cargo tank should be exhausted by GCU or liquefied through the BOG reliquefaction system and returned back. This study focused into its operational characteristics through the process simulation using HYSYS and discussed details on the influence of the variations of some operational parameters such as a distribution ratio by the change of fuel mass flow into the DF engine.
Natural frequencies of a cryogenic fuel tank of LNG vehicle were computed to check the safety related to the resonances, and tests were performed to confirm the vibrational durability of a cryogenic fuel tank. There were 3 tests. The first test started at excitation frequency of 31.9Hz, and the test was performed reducing the excitation frequencies. Failure took place at 22.1Hz. The second test was performed with the frequencies to be increased. At 12.7 Hz, failure took place and nitrogen gas was exhausted. In the third test, the excitation frequencies were continuously changed, and the vibration port was failed in the range between 8 Hz and 19.3 Hz. Detailed research on the failed parts of the tank in this study is recommended to enhance the safety of the cryogenic fuel tanks of LNG vehicles.

A risk assessment is performed at the initial design stage of LNG-fuelled ships subject to new fuel supply systems due to marine environmental and emissions regulations. Risk assessment involves a series of logical steps that enable systematic risk analysis and evaluation. LNG-fuelled ships mainly consist of a tank for storing LNG, a gas supply unit for supplying LNG to the engine, an engine using LNG as fuel, and a bunkering manifold for receiving LNG. The components of the LNG fuelled ship are determined according to the characteristics, size, rout, and operating distance. Therefore, the risk factors of each ships are different, and the risk analysis also changes. In this study we consider the systems of ships using LNG as a fuel and analyze the risk assessment of certain cases where the actual risk assessment has been carried out.

As a fuel for ship propulsion, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is currently considered a proven and reasonable solution for meeting the IMO emission regulations, with gas engines for the LNG-fueled ship covering a broad range of power outputs. For an LNG-fueled ship, the LNG bunkering process is different from the HFO bunkering process, in the sense that the cryogenic liquid transfer generates a considerable amount of boil-off gas (BOG). This study investigated the effect of the temperature difference on boil-off gas (BOG) production during ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering to the receiving tank of the LNG-fueled ship. A concept design was resumed for the cargo/fuel tanks in the LNG bunkering vessel and the receiving vessel, as well as for LNG handling systems. Subsequently, the storage tank capacities of the LNG were $4,500m^3$ for the bunkering vessel and $700m^3$ for the receiving vessel. Process dynamic simulations by Aspen HYSYS were performed under several bunkering scenarios, which demonstrated that the boil-off gas and resulting pressure buildup in the receiving vessel were mainly determined by the temperature difference between bunkering and the receiving tank, pressure of the receiving tank, and amount of remaining LNG.

The global demand for Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG) continues to increase and is facing a big cycle. To keep pace with the increase in international demand for LNG, the demand for LNG fueled ships is also increasing. Since LNG fuel tanks are operated in a cryogenic environment, insulation technology is very important, and although there are various types of insulation applied to Type C tanks, multi-layer insulation and vacuum insulation are typically applied. Powder insulation materials are widely used for storage and transportation of cryogenic liquids in tanks with such a complex insulation structure. In this study, compression tests at room and cryogenic temperature were performed on closed perlite, glass bubble, and fumed silica, which are representative powder insulation material candidates. Finally, the applicability to the Type C fuel tank was reviewed by analyzing the experimental results of this study.

The demand of natural gas is gradually increasing as a clean fuel in the world. Therefore, LNG storage tanks and related facilities of the importance of leading a community-based facility have emerged. The seismic design of LNG storage tank including seismic analysis have been developed steadily. But, the seismic analysis and design techniques for LNG storage tanks are lacking, in Korea. Consequently, it is necessary to develop an analysis model that LNG storage tanks in isolation system can describe the behavior. Further, LNG storage tank capable of ensuring safety and economy, it is necessary to develop design techniques. The studies have suggested seismic design procedures of LNG storage tanks with isolation system including triple-FPB and idealized complex hysteresis model of triple-FPB.
The most crucial factor in membrane LNG ships to ensure sage operations, is how to effectively control tank pressure at the time of excessive generation of boil off gas (BOG). When the ships carry out tank cool down with her retaining heel prior to arrival at loading port, the vessel encounters the critical situation of excessive BOG and high tank pressure that can lead to high degree of risk. This is to provide one of the best ways to secure safe and effective LNG ship operations focusing on the detailed methods of tank cool down to achieve ATR(Arrival Temperature requirement) without building up high tank pressure and excessive BOG and calculating the appropriate heel quantity to be unutilized for tank cool down and fuel during ballast voyage.

Natural gas as a clean fuel of the world demand for the trend is gradually increasing demand for clean energy in the country and there is growing interest. Therefore, LNG storage tanks and related facilities in the country of the importance of leading a community-based facility has emerged. So common sense that an earthquake with a seismic isolation device LNG storage tank similar to the actual behavior of the analytical model which can describe the development and construction of storage tanks to enhance the safety and economic design techniques need to be developed. In this study, a base isolation system, seismic analysis procedure of LNG storage tanks, and Triple-FPB developed a mathematical model of the present crystallized and complexity factors to the sum over histories model simplifies the complex behavior of the LNG storage tank with base isolation system how to interpret the seismic isolation is proposed.
