This study was conducted to investigate the environmental factors of habitat of Lindera erythrocarpa and to test seedling growth of the plant transplanted in a field of Sung Kyun Kwan Univ. in Suwon, Kyungkido. The results were as follows ; 1. The wild lindera erythrocarpa was growing in Mt. Kwan whose January average temperature was -3.4$^{\circ}C$, and minimum average temperature was -14.8$^{\circ}C$ in January. It was also growing in Mt. Suri whose daily minimum temperature is 3.4$^{\circ}C$ lower than that of Seoul. Therefore, there was no problem for Lindera erythrocarpa to grow in Seoul regions in terms of winter coldness. 2. The growth of seedlings of Lindera erythrocarpa transplanted in a field of Sung Kyun Kwan Univ. in Suwon, Kyunkido in 1990 showed that average height of the tree was 1.64m, average diameter of root was 2.44cm, and that average width of crown was 1m. Therefore, there was no problem for Lindera erythrocarpa to grow under winter coldness in Suwon area.
This study was carried out to investigate the check shelling distribution of Lindera erythrocarpa Makino in Kanghwa Island, MT. Suri, Kyunggido and MT. Kaya, Chungchongnamdo. The results were as follows : The total distribution area of Linedra erythrocarpa where are Jeondeung temple and Jugsu temple Kanghwa Island, MT. Suri, Kyunggido and MT. Kaya, Chungchongnamdo was 344.4ha and the total number of Linedra erythrocarpa was 3,224. The total number of femle Linedra erythrocarpa was625(22.2%) except the seedlings under 2cm of DBH(Diameter breast of height). For the estimation of tree age by counting of tree rings, the regression equation was Y=1.79X+9.47($R^2$=0.83, DBH=cm). The soil acidity of stands studied was $pH4.6{\sim}pH5.8$. And the soil acidity of Seoul was $pH4.2{\sim}pH4.5$ So for the Planting Linedra erythrocarpa in Seoul area, the soil acidity of planting area should be changed to $pH4.6{\sim}pH5.8$. The flower size of and female of Linedra erythrocarpa was 5.96mm, 3.66mm, respectively. The length of petiole of male and female of Linedra erythrocarpa was 5.96mm, 3.66mm, respectively. The length of petiole of male and female of Linedra erythrocarpa was 5.96mm, 3.66mm, respectively. And the number of flowers per flowering bud of male and female were 13.4, 11.2, respectively. The flowering period of Lindera erythrocarpa in Suwon was 21 days from May 2 to May 22. And The leaf continuing period of Lindera erythrocarpa in Suwon was 203 days from April 7 to October 27. And the fall-foliage color continuing period was 10 days from October 18 to October 27. The fruit continuing period of Lindera erythrocarpa in Suwon was 61 days from September 26 to November 26.
This study was carried out to investigate the method of propagation of Lindera erythrocarpa Makino. The results were as follows: 1. After the treatment of warm stratification for 1 month followed by cold stratification for 3 months, the germination ratio of seeds of Lindera erythrocarpa was from 84.6 to 93.6 percent. But, dry stored seeds lose their viability Quickly and should be placed in pretreatment im-mediately. Also, the seeds of control district germinated from 68.6 to 74.6 percent. So it was confirmed that the seed of Lindera erythocaeicarpa was not doubly dormant. 2. Softwood cuttings of Lindera erythrocarpa with 5,000 ppm IBA on August 4. 1992 resulted in the best rooting of 95.0 percentage. 3.Twenty percent of the graft union were obtained in the green wood grafting in Lindera erythrocarpa on June 7, 1993. And five percent of the graft union were obtained in the hard wood grafting in Lindera erythrcoar pa on April 6. 1993.

This study was executed to find out the succession stage and the ecological niche of Lindera erythrocarpa Markino. Four sites were selected by field investigation. They are Jeondungsa and Jeongsusa of Kanghwa Island, Mt. Suri of Anyang and Mt. Gaya of Chungcheongnamdo. They located in the region which have the similar temperature with Seoul region or lower average temperature for winter than that of adjacent Seoul. In the four sites, L, erythrocarpa was appeard in canopy layer at L. erythrocarpa community in Jeondungsa, L. erythrocarpa-Q. serrata, Z. serrata-L. erythrocarpa community in Jeongsusa, Castanea crenata-L, erythrocarpa community, L. erythrocarpa-Q. serrata community in Mt. Gaya and in the rest of the sites, it lives in subtree and shrub layer. And in the four sites but Jeongsusa area, it correspond with Chang(1991)'s study that L. erythrocarpa is dominant species in the site impacted by human. L. erythrocarpa lives with Quercus spp. such as Q. serrata, Q. variabilis, Q. mongolica and Carpinus laxiflora but it's presumably a passing phenomena.
Three chalcones and a stilbenoid have been isolated from the stem bark of Lindera erythrocarpa. They were elucidated as 2'-hydroxy-3',4',5',6'- tetramethoxychalcone, 2',4'-dihydroxy-3',6'-dimethoxy chalcone, 2',4',5',6'- tetrahydroxy-3'-methoxychalcone, and 5,6-dihydroxy-2,3,4-trimethoxystilbene. Chemical structures were elucidated on the basis of MS, $^1H,\;^{13}C$ and 2D-NMR spectroscopic data. This is the first report on the isolation of these compounds from the L. erythrocarpa.
In this study, a new compound, 1-(2-hydroxy-3,4,5,6-tetramethoxyphenyl)-1-methoxy-3-phenylpropane; (Jeju-Erythrane) was isolated and identified from the bark of Lindera erythrocarpa Makino. Also, we investigated the effects of Jeju-Erythrane on alpha melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH)-induced melanogenesis in mouse B16F10 melanoma cells. The new compound dose dependently inhibited the tyrosinase activity and melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells. The new compound showed inhibitory effect on the Tyrosinase and TRP-1 gene transcription but not on the TRP-2 gene. These results suggest that the new compound of L. erythrocarpa could be used as a functional biomaterial in developing skin whitening agent.
Stem and root of Lindera erythrocarpa were described and compared in the wood anatomical aspects. Root wood appeared to differ from stem wood in the qualitative features of growth ring boundary, extraneous materials in vessel element and ray parenchyma cell, outline of ray, and sheath cell. In the quantitative features, there were differences between these two tissues in vessels per square millimeter, tangential diameter of vessel lumina, length of vessel element, and width of ray. These wood anatomical differences between stem above ground and root below ground were thought to be attributed to their different growth environments.
Methanol extract obtained from Lindera erythocarpa leaves was successively fractionated with n-hexane, ethylacetate, n-butanol, and $H_2O$. From ethylacetate fraction, an active fraction was isolated through repeated silica gel column chromatography and recrystallization, and was identified as a stereoisomer complex of methyllucidone by MS and MMR analyses. The complex showed 85% antifungal activity at 50 {\mu}g/ml$ against the disease wheat leaf rust.
The objective of this study was to monitor the edge vegetation development process after timber harvesting at deciduous hardwood forest in Seoul National University Research Forest of Baekwoonsan (Mt), Korea The results from the 4th (2001) and 5th (2003) survey for edge vegetation development process after timber harvesting are summarized as follows. The competitive species at the harvested forest edge are Lindera erythrocarpa, Weigela subsessilis, Lespedeza maximowiczii, Lindera obtusiioba, Arajia eiata. There were Lindera erythrocarpa, Ivelgela subsessilis, Staphyiea bumaida as competitive species at harvested forest border between harvested forest edge and harvested interior. And at the forest interior, the competitive species were Lindera erythrocarpa, Lindera obtusiloba. There were differences in the competitive species at the forest edge due to the differences in direction, altitude, and existing dominant species. But Lindera erythrocarpa, Weigela subsessilis were appeared to be a competitive specieg at the southwestern slope (A site) and northeastern slope (B site). After timber harvesting, Sasa borealisshowed a good growth in early days, but showed a tendency of declining with the developing of canopy layer And coverage was generally higher at the Northeastern slope (Site B) than southwestern slop (Site A). The similarity index was lower as the distance from the forest edge becomes farther.
The objective of this study was to monitor vegetation development process after timber harvesting at (Mt.) Baekwoonsan Seoul National University Forests, Korea. Two monitoring plots were established in 1994 and woody plant were monitored from 1994 to 1999. Vegetation development pattern during last six years(1994-1999) after timber harvesting were as follows; Styrax obassia, Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa as of the existing tree were competitive species in the first year after clearcut, and Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa as of sprout tree) and Aralia elata as of seedling were dominant species in the sixth years after clearcut. Species diversity indices of harvested forest interior was decreased at the southwestern slope and increased at the northeastern slope. According to DBH distribution pattern, No. of individuals of Lindera erythrocarpa and Aralia elata showed vigorous growth in the sub-canopy layer and then Styrax japonica, Quercus serrata, Maackia amurensis, Lespedeza maximowixzii, Lindera obtusiloba, Staphylea bumalda, Clero-dendrum trichotomum, Weigela subsessilis, in order showed good growth in the sixth year after clearcut. Lindera erythrocarpa with a reversed J-shaped curve pattern by DBH class will be increased while Aralia elata with a J-shaped curve pattern will be decreased.
