LCA기법을 이용한 하수처리장의 환경영향 평가 (Environmental Impact Assessment of Wastewater Treatment Plant Using Life Cycle Assessment)

  • Comprehensive environmental impact of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was evaluated with life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology based on ISO 14040. As environmental impact assessment method, Eco-indicator 95 and Eco-indicator 99 were used. The studied WWTP had a capacity of $100,000m^3/d$, and its life span of civil structure and main machinery was designed to 40 years and 20 years, respectively. As the results, more than 95% of environmental impact was produced by using electricity and chemical use in operation stage. In construction stage, temporary shoring facility was the major reason of environmental load, however, its impact was much less than those by operation utilities.

The Life Cycle and Secondary Production of Nemoura gemma Ham and Lee (1998) in a High Mountain Stream in Korea

  • Life cycle and secondary production of Nymphs of Nemoura gemma Ham and Lee were estimated by using specimens collected from a stream in Mt. Jumbong in the central Korean peninsula. N. gemma in the study stream was univoltine. Youngest nymphs were collected in April. They appeared to grow continuously until the emergence in early spring next year. The cohort production interval for the species was estimated as 399 days. The annual secondary production (ash free dry weight) estimated by removal-summation and the size-frequency methods were 582 and $786\;mg\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$, respectively. Gut content analysis showed that N. gemma was a shredder.

  • We call as plant life cycle the process starting from plant plan, design to disuse by way of construction, operation, but the plant facility inside it comes to changes of cope with various inner factor like blazing phenomenon and outer factor according to economic state. On the presumption of these factors, the problem is brought about how plant should be managed, this study attempt to suggest the conservation management through economic evaluation in investment design and alternative, that is, methodology connecting that of economical efficiency evaluation based on LCC(Life Cycle Costing) thinking method and facility management with that of life prediction.

Optimal Target Reliability of Bridges Based on Minimum Life-Cycle Cost Consideration

  • Cost-effectiveness in design is considered for determining the target reliability of concrete bridges under seismic actions. This objective can be achieved based on the economic optimization of the expected life-cycle cost of a bridge, which includes initial cost, direct losses, and indirect losses of a bridge due to strong earthquakes over its lifetime. A separating factor is defined to consider the redundancy of a transportation network. The Park-Ang damage model is employed to define the damage of a bridge under seismic action, and a Monte Carlo method based on the DRAIN-2DX program is developed to assess the failure probability of a bridge. The results for an example bridge analyzed in this paper show that the optimal target failure probability depends on the traffic volume carried by the bridge and is between 1.0×10/sup -3/ to 3.0×10/sup -3/ over a life of 50 years.

  • Survivin, an apoptosis inhibitor/cell-cycle regulator, is critically required for suppression of apoptosis and ensuring normal cell division in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle. It is highly expressed in a cell cycle-regulated manner and localizes together with caspase-3 on microtubules within centrosomes. Whether survivin is a physiologically relevant caspase inhibitor has been unclear due to the difficulties with obtaining correctly folded survivin and finding right conditions for inhibition assay.(omitted)

  • As Kyoto protocol has been effective in 2005, the reduction of $CO_2$ emission is a global urgent problem. In Korea, the $CO_2$ emission of transportation increases continuously, which can be solved partially by the use of railroad. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate exactly the $CO_2$ emission of railroad through life cycle approach. In this study, the $CO_2$ emission of electric motor unit (EMU) was evaluated with its carboy material using life cycle inventory analysis (LCIA). Among the life cycles of EMU, $CO_2$ emission was the highest in the running phase. As the total weight of EMU was lowered, $CO_2$ emission was reduced. In conclusion, the light-weighting of EMU can reduce $CO_2$ emission efficiently.

수리부속비 비용추정식 개발과 활용방안 (Development and Application of the Spare-parts Cost Estimating Relationships)

  • Currently, a life cycle cost estimates(LCCE) is the most important factor in weapon system acquisition process. However, operation and maintenance(O&M) cost related studies are insufficient from the previous literature survey. O&M cost consists of various cost factors such a man power, maintenance and direct & indirect support costs. We have known that spare-parts cost is a key factor in the O&M cost. In this paper, we developed the spare-parts cost estimating relationships(CERs) of fixed-wing aircraft and armored vehicle weapon systems which include 4 historical cost drivers ; system acquisition cost, deterioration rate, localization rate, mission characteristic. Furthermore, we proposed the application methodologies that O&M cost estimating, total life cycle cost estimating and determination of the economic life using the spare-parts CERs.

Various Alcohols as Electrolysis Suppressants in Zn-air Secondary Batteries

  • The gelling agent used in Zn-air cells plays a role in improving battery life. It prevents the evaporation of water and diffusion of $Zn^{2+}$ ions away from the current collector. Additional functionality was incorporated by replacing some of the gelling agents with new materials. Alcohols with moderate viscosity, namely maltose, sucrose, poly ethylene glycol 600, and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose, were used to replace some gelling agents in this work. Among these alcohols, poly ethylene glycol 600 and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose improved the cycle life of full cells. This improved cycle life was attributed to the inhibition of water electrolysis and the improved cycle life of the anode.

  • One major development in bridge life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) in recent years is to develop deterioration model for bridge components so that the times of repair/replacement throughout a component's life span can be properly determined. Taiwan also developed her own bridge LCCA model in 2003, integrating with the bridge inspection database in the local bridge management system (T-BMS). Under the framework of the local LCCA model, this study employs the reliability method in developing a deterioration model of bridge components. A component deteriorates through time in its reliability, which represents the probability of a component's condition index exceeds a user specified threshold. Model assumptions and rationale are described in the paper. The steps for applying the developed model are explained in detail. Results and findings are reported.

고강도 저합금강의 저주기 피로특성 (Low Cycle Fatigue Characteristics of High Strength Low Alloy Steel)

  • Low cycle fatigue tests are performed on high strength low alloy steels that be developed for submarine material. The relation between absorbed plastic strain energy and numbers of cycle to failure is examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of structural steels by using plastic strain energy method. The cyclic properties are determined by a least square fit techniques. The life predicted by the plastic strain energy method is found to coincide with experiment data and results obtained from the Coffin-Manson method. Also the cyclic behavior of structural steels is characterized by cyclic softening with increasing number of cycle at room temperature. Especially, low cycle fatigue characteristics and microstructural changes of structural steels are investigated according to changing tempering temperatures. In the case of PFS steels, the $\varepsilon$-Cu is formed in 550C of tempering temperature and enhances the low cycle fatigue properties.
