  • Most of the previous studies on natural convection were based on the numerical analysis, and some experimental studies considered the classic case of thermal convection. In this study, an adiabatic square body was located at the center of an enclosure between the bottom hot and top cold walls. And the measurement of the detailed temperature fields was conducted by the method of two-color Laser Induced Fluorescence using a Nd:Yag laser. As a result, heat transfer characteristics of natural convection with an adiabatic body was estimated as a function of time over a range of Rayleigh numbers.

  • Characteristics of PAH and soot formation in coflow diffusion flames of methane, methane, propane, and ethylene have been experimentally studied to investigate the temperature and fuel structure effect on soot formation. PAH and soot images were acquired by applying PAH LIF and LII techniques, respectively and temperature was measured using R-type thermocouple. Direct photographs of soot particles have also been taken by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) through a thermophoretic sampling. Comparison of PAH and soot formation between the aliphatic fuels has shown the importance of fuel structure effect in diffusion flames.

  • The flow structure and heat transfer characteristics of a turbulent buoyant jet were investigated experimentally. The instantaneous temperature and velocity fields in the near field were measured using a two-frame PIV and PLIF techniques. A thin light sheet illuminated a two-dimensional cross section of the buoyant jet in which Rhodamine B was added as a fluorescent dye. The intensity variations of LIF signal from Rhodamine B molecules scattered by the laser light were captured by a CCD camera after passing an optical filter. By ensemble averaging the instantaneous temperature and velocity fields, the mean temperature and velocity fields as well as the spatial distributions of turbulent statistics were obtained. The results show the flow structure and convective heat transfer of the developing shear layer in the near field.

  • Comprehensive measurements for velocity and temperature fields have been conducted. A Micro PIV 2-color LIF system have been setup to measure the buoyancy driven fields in a 1-mm heated channel with low Grashof-Prandtl numbers [$86]. Fluorescence microscopy is combined with an MPIV system to obtain enough intensity images and clear pictures from nano-scale fluorescence particles. The spatial resolution of the Micro PIV system is $75{\mu}m\;by\;67{\mu}m$ and error due to Brownian motion is estimated $1.05\%$. Temperature measurements have achieved the $4.7\;{\mu}m$ spatial resolution with relatively large data uncertainties the present experiment. The measurement uncertainties have been decreased down to less than ${\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ when measurement resolution is equivalent to $76\;{\mu}m$. Measured velocity and temperature fields will be compared with numerical results to examine the feasibility of development as a diagnostic technique.

  • This paper describes preliminary discussions on spatial distribution of NO density, which is mostly contained in simulated NOX exhaust, between a wire-cylinder geometry discharge gaps by using Laser Induced Fluorescence(LIF) Spectroscopy. Spatial distribution of NO density will be measured with varying NO concentrations from 166 to 644[ppm] and diameters of central electrode from 6 to 10mm. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser, Optical Parametric Oscillator(OPO), and Frequency Doubler are used to excite NO molecules to their excited state.

  • Two round jets. impinged and pulsed. were measured with high-resolution 3D-PTV technique. The measurement system consists of three CCD cameras, Ar-ion laser, an image grabber and a host computer. Two fitness functions were introduced in a genetic algorithm in order to enhance the correspondences of the particles. One was based on a concept of the continuum theory and the other one was based on a minimum distance error. The velocity profiles of the impinged jet obtained by the constructed 3D-PTV system were compared with those of LDV measurements made in this study. The head vortex of the jet was visualized by LIF and was reconstructed by the constructed high-resolution 3D-PTV system for comparisons.

  • Vortices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. Most of investigations, however, are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LIF technique are discussed for the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface is totally different from the clean free surface case.

  • Characteristics of Argon metastable density with electron density have been studied by using Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) in ICP. Two different evolutions of measured metastable densities with electron density depending on a measurement position are addressed. The experimental result is explained by using a zero dimensional global model and is due to electron kinetic properties in the positions that can be seen from electron energy probability functions measured by Langmuir probe. The underlying physics on metastable density with electron density and an experimental method of LIF are presented in detail.

  • The internal flow field in a centrifugal pump working at the several flow conditions has been measured by using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique with the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) particles and the refractive index matched (RIM) facilities. The impeller of the centrifugal pump has an outlet diameter in 100mm, and consists of six two-dimensional curvature backward swept blades of constant thickness. Measured results give reliable flow patterns in the pump. It is obvious that application of LIF particle and RIM are the key methods to obtain the right PIV measured results in pump internal flow.

  • The relation of the inlet fuel distribution, velocity, and overall equivalence ratio to the stability of a lean burning no-swirl dump combustor was examined. Premixed or partially premixed natural gas was introduced into the air stream, which flowed to the dump region through an annular inlet pipe. Inlet air was preheated upto 400 deg.C. Combustion instability was observed to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio (> 0.6) as the degree of unpremixedness was increased. Instabilities exhibited a dominant frequency of ~ 500 Hz, which corresponded to a half wave mode of combustor. CH chemiluminescence and pressure fluctuations were in-phase when combustion instabilities occurred. Acetone LIF images revealed that there was a strong fuel concentration gradient across the inlet annulus. Phase resolved OH LIF images showed that inlet fuel distribution was affected by the combustion instabilities.
