This paper describes the effect of different testing parameters (configuration of infrastructure and truck position on road) on truck aerodynamic coefficients under cross wind conditions, by means of a numerical approach known as Large Eddy Simulation (LES). In order to estimate the air flow behaviour around both the infrastructure and the truck, the filtered continuity and momentum equations along with the Smagorinsky-Lilly model were solved. A solution for these non-linear equations was approached through the finite volume method (FVM) and using temporal and spatial discretization schemes. As for the results, the aerodynamic coefficients acting on the truck model exhibited nearly constant values regardless of the Reynolds number. The flat ground is the infrastructure where the rollover coefficient acting on the truck model showed lowest values under cross wind conditions (yaw angle of $90^{\circ}$), while the worst infrastructure studied for vehicle stability was an embankment with downward-slope on the leeward side. The position of the truck on the road and the value of embankment slope angle that minimizes the rollover coefficient were determined by successfully applying the Response Surface Methodology.
The present study numerically investigates the effect of the shape of absorbing revetment on wave overtopping rate under regular and irregular incident waves. At first, the numerical model developed by Hur and Choi(2008), which considers the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, directly simulates Wave-Structure-Sandy seabed interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulent model in 2-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-2D), is validated when compared to experimental data. Numerical simulations are then performed to examine the effect of the shape of absorbing revetment and incident wave conditions on wave overtopping rate. The numerical result shows that the wave overtopping rate decreases with the slope gradient of absorbing revetment under both regular and irregular waves. In addition, the effects of mean grain size and porosity of absorbing revetment, incident wave period and crest height on wave overtopping rate are discussed.
For the large scale computation of turbulent flows around an arbitrarily shaped body, a parallel LES (large eddy simulation) code has been recently developed in which domain decomposition method is adopted. METIS and MPI (message Passing interface) libraries are used for domain partitioning and data communication between processors, respectively. For unsteady computation of the incompressible Wavier-Stokes equation, 4-step splitting finite element algorithm [1] is adopted and Smagorinsky or dynamic LES model can be chosen fur the modeling of small eddies in turbulent flows. For the validation and performance-estimation of the parallel code, a three-dimensional laminar flow generated by natural convection inside a cube has been solved. Then, we have solved the turbulent flow around MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) model at $Re = 2.6\times10^6$, which is based on the model height and inlet free stream velocity, using 32 processors on IBM SMP cluster and compared with the existing experiment.

To investigate the flame dynamics in an annular combustor with single swirl injector, a 3D large-eddy simulation (LES) and a level-set flamelet turbulent combustion model have been implemented. The LM6000 developed by GEAE has been used as the combustor of concern and boundary conditions are based on experimental data. The strong central toroidal recirculation zone induced by the volume expansion of the combustion gas and the vortex breakdown continuously occurred through the procession of the vortex with decreasing strength, are observed.
In order to generate the stable tsunami in a numerical wave tank, a two-dimensional numerical model, LES-WASS-2D has been introduced the non-reflected wave generation system for various tsunami waveforms. And then, comparing to existing experimental results it is revealed that computed results of the LES-WASS-2D are in good agreement with the experimental results on spatial and temporal tsunami waveforms in the vicinity of a seawall. It is shown that the applied model in this study is applicable to the numerical simulations on tsunami overtopping and inundation. Using the numerical results, the characteristics of overtopping and inundation on a seawall are also discussed with volume ratio of tsunami and relative tsunami height. The wider the tsunami waveform, tsunami overtopping quantity and inundation distances are linearly increased. Therefore, the hydraulic characteristics is highly likely to be underestimated against the real tsunami if the solitary wave of approximation theory is applied for the overtopping/inundation simulations due to a tsunami.
Recently, there has been an increase in the construction of various types of coastal structures for efficient wave dissipation, seawater exchange, and so on. Among these, a perforated slit caisson has been widely used to reduce the reflected wave energy and the wave pressure on the structure. Therefore, many studies on the wave force on a caisson, as well as the wave reflection from it, have been carried out with laboratory experiments and numerical analyses, considering it as a 2-D problem. However, because a structure like a perforated slit caisson has a variable 3-D shape, waves forces should be considered as a 3-D problem. Therefore, in this paper, a fully-nonlinear 3-D numerical model (LES-WASS-3D) is proposed to examine the reflection characteristics of a perforated slit caisson with two chambers. The numerical model, LES-WASS-3D, was verified in a 3-D wave field by a comparison with existing experimental data for wave reflection coefficients. Then, using the numerical results, the reflection from a perforated slit caisson with two chambers was examined in relation to wave steepness, chamber width, and the shape/porosity of perforated slit.

The paper describes a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) study of turbulent flow around a cavity. A series of three-dimensional cavities placed in a turbulent boundary layer are simulated at a Reynolds number of $1.0{\times}10^5$ by considering U and h, which represent the velocity at the top and the depth of the cavity, respectively. In order to obtain the appropriate solution for the filtered Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible flow, the computational mesh forms dense close to the wall of the cavity but relatively coarse away from the wall; this helps reduce computation cost and ensure rapid convergence. The Boussinesq hypothesis is employed in the subgrid-scale turbulence model. In order to determine the subgrid-scale turbulent viscosity, the Smagorinsky-Lilly SGS model is applied and the CFL number for time marching is set as 1.0. The results show the flow variations inside cavities of different sizes and shapes.

In the present study, a three dimensional hydrodynamic characteristics around the fully submerged dual breakwaters with a sand beach has been investigated numerically using a 3-D numerical scheme, which can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model and is able to consider wave-structure-seabed interaction in 3-dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-3D), recently developed by Hur and Lee (2007). Based on the numerical experiments, strong vortices can be generated fore and aft edges of the structures, and propagate lee sides. Thus relatively large circulation flows are occurred around submerged breakwaters. The 3-D flow hydrodynamic characteristics have been examined by mean flows and mean vortices for various x-y, x-z sections and y-z layers. Wave height distribution and wave set-up around and over submerged breakwaters, and breaking point migration toward shore side is discussed in detail.
The turbulent flow with wake, reattachment and recirculation is a very important problem that is related to vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics. The Smagorinsky Model (SM), the Dynamics Subgrid Scale Model (DSM), and the Lagrangian Dynamic Subgrid Scale Model (LDSM) are used to predict the three-dimensional flow field around a bluff body model. The Reynolds number used is 45,000 based on the bulk velocity and the height of the bluff body. The fully developed turbulent flow, which is generated by the driver part, is used for the inlet boundary condition. The Convective boundary condition is imposed on the outlet boundary condition, and the Spalding wall function is used for the wall boundary condition. We compare the results of each model with the results of the PIV measurement. First of all, the LES predicts flow behavior better than the k-$\xi$ turbulence model. When ew compare various LES models, the DSM and the LDSM agree with the PIV experimental data better than the SM in the complex flow, with the separation and the reattachment at the upper front part of th bluff body. But in the rear part of the bluff body, the SM agrees with the PIV experimental results better than them. In this case, the SM predicts overall flow behavior better than the DSM nd the LDSM.
Recent numerical simulation has a tendency to require the higher-order accuracy in time, as well as in space. This tendency is more true in LES and acoustic noise simulation. In the present work, the accuracy of a Fractional step method, which is widely used in LES simulation, has been increased to the fourth-order accurate compact Pade discretization. To validate the present code, the flow-field past a cylinder was simulated and compared with experiment. A good agreement with experiment was achieved.
