하이브리드 모델로는 벽에 인접한 격자의 해상도에 상대적으로 민감하지 않은 SST(shear-stress transport) 난류 모델을 이용하는 DES(detached-eddy simulation) 기법을 적용하였다.

  • This study evaluates the wind speed forecast near the surface layer using the Weather Research Forecasting with Large Eddy Simulation (WRF-LES) model in order to compare the planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterization with the LES model in terms of different spatial resolution. A numerical simulation is conducted with 1-km and 333-m horizontal resolution over the Gangwon Province including complex mountains and coastal region. The numerical experiments with 1-km and 333-m horizontal resolution employ PBL parameterization and LES, respectively. The wind speed forecast in mountainous region shows a better forecast performance in 333-m experiment than in 1-km, while wind speed in coastal region is similar to the observation in 1-km spatial resolution experiment. Therefore, LES experiment, which directly simulates the turbulence process near the surface layer, contributes to more accurate forecast of surface wind speed in mountainous regions.

  • In this study, turbulent flows in a planar combustor which has a square rib-type flame holder are numerically investigated by Large Eddy Simulation(LES). Firstly, the flow fields with or without jet injection downstream of the flame-holder are examined using uniform inlet velocity. Comparison of the present LES results with experimental one shows a good agreement. Secondly, to investigate mixing of oxidizer(air) and fuel injected behind the flame holder, the scalar-transport equation is introduced and solved. From the instantaneous flow and scalar fields, complex and intense mixing phenomena between fuel and jet are observed. It is shown that the ratio of jet to blocked air velocity is an important factor to determine the flow structure. Especially, when the ratio is large enough, the fuel jet penetrates the main vortices shed from the flame holder, resulting in significant changes in the flow and scalar fields.

  • A three-dimensional two-phase large eddy simulation(LES) has been conducted to investigate the breakup and atomization of liquid jets such as a diesel jet in parallel flow and water jet in cross flow. Gas-liquid two-phase flow was solved by a combined model of Eulerian for gas flow and Lagrangian for a liquid jet. Two stochastic breakup models were implemented to simulate the liquid column and droplet breakup process. The penetration depth and SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) were analyzed, which was comparable with the experimental data.

  • Evaluation of turbulence models is performed for a better prediction of thermal stratification in an upper plenum of a liquid metal reactor by applying them to the experiment conducted at JNC. The turbulence models tested in the present study are the two-layer model, the $\kappa-\omega$ model, the v2-f model and the low-Reynolds number differential stress-flux model. When the algebraic flux model or differential flux model are used for treating the turbulent heat flux, there exist little differences between turbulence models in predicting the temporal variation of temperature. However, the v2-f model and the low-Reynolds number differential stress-flux model better predict the steep gradient o( temperature at the interface of thermal stratification, and only the v2-f model predicts properly the oscillation of temperature. The LES Is needed for a better prediction of the amplitude and frequency of the temperature fluctuation.

  • Flow difference between reacting and non-reacting case in a swirl stabilized annular combustor is investigated using 3D Large Eddy Simulation with flamelet turbulent combustion model. The combustor of concern is the LM6000, lean premixed dry low-NOx annular combustor, developed by GEAE. Boundary conditions are based on experimental data. Heat release as a result of combustion put the dilatation of density in primary combustion zone highly increased so that the main swirl stream behind of a swirl cup stretched further downstream than that of non-reacting case. The oval shape of core flow in cross-section to flow direction, which clearly observed in non-reacting case, tends to be circle, and small vorticities in wide range in non-reacting case disappears, but the size of iso-vorticity increase in reacting case.

  • Two aspects of Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) are investigated in order to improve its performance. The first one is on how to determine the model coefficient in conjunction with a dynamic subgrid-scale model, and the second one is on a wall-layer model(WLM) which allows one to skip near-wall regions to save a large number of grid points otherwise required. Especially, a WLM suitable for a separated flow is considered. Firstly, an averaging technique to calculate the model coefficient of dynamic subgrid-scale modeling(DSGSM) is introduced. The technique is based on the concept of local averaging, and useful to stabilize numerical solution in conjunction with LES of complex turbulent flows using DSGSM. It is relatively simple to implement, and takes very low overhead in CPU time. It is also able to detect the region of negative model coefficient where the "backscattering" of turbulence energy occurs. Secondly, a wall-layer model based on a local turbulence intensity is considered. It locally determines wall-shear stresses depending on the local flow situations including separation, and yields better predictions in separated regions than the conventional WLM. The two techniques are tested for a turbulent obstacle flow, and show the direction of further improvements.rovements.

  • In engineering application of large eddy simulation, there are still questions as follows grid dependency on numerical results, the effect of upwind scheme against a calculation instability, appropriate boundary conditions dealing with turbulence fluctuation and the performance of SGS models. In this study, in order to develop the LES to the engineering application, large eddy simulation was carried out to investigate the effect of upwind scheme, turbulent subgrid model and the grid dependancy of the flow around a wall-mounted cube in a channel at Re=40,000 based on cubic height and bulk mean velocity. The computed velocities, turbulence quantities, separation and reattachment length were evaluated compared with the experimental results of R. Matinuzzi and C. Tropea.

  • A two-phase Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been conducted to investigate breakup and atomization of a liquid jet in a cross turbulent flow in a rectangular duct. Gas-droplet two-phase flow was solved by a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method which tracks every individual particles. Effects of liquid breakup models, sub-grid scale models, and a order of spatial discretization was investigated. The penetration depth in cross flow was comparable with experimental data by varying breakup model and LES scheme. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) distribution downstream of jet was analyzed.
