  • LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) products is needed to have high reliability and are produced without harmful material. Because Substitution for CCFL of Light source used to Conventional backlight unit, research is going about product with LED of light source at present. In this experiment, We made the LED backlight unit with high quality for automotivenavigation. This backlight unit has center luminance of 6500 nit at15W power consumption. We adjusted chromaticity by using ten Blue LED and eight side emitting type White LEDs with high power LED from Lumileds company.

  • In this paper, We propose the visible light communication(VLC) link based on white light emitting diode (LED) and Photo detector(PD). The proposed architecture is demonstrated experimentally and its performance is verified through the experimental results of quality-factor(Q-factor) and eye pattern of 10Mb/s PRBS signal. The ambient light effect from a typical type fluorescent lamp source was also analyzed. when the distance between the LED and the PD is about 1m, error free wireless transmission of the LED was achieved up to 10Mb/s data rate. Under the condition with ambient light, low BER, data transmission of the VLC link is achieved up to 5Mb/s data rate at 1m. Also, when the PD is placed away from the center, low BER data transmission of the VLC link is achieved up to 1Mb/s at 10cm and 10Mb/s at 5cm.

  • The clinical performance of light polymerized composite resins is greatly influenced by the quality of the light curing unit used. Commonly used halogen light curing units(LCUs) have some specific drawbacks such as decreasing light output with time. To overcome this, the blue LED LCUs are newly developed and introduced. The purpose of this study was to observe the reaction kinetics and the degree of polymerization of composite resins when cured by different light sources and to evaluate the effectiveness of the blue LED LCUs compared with conventional halogen LCUs.(omitted)

Preprocessing for High Quality Real-time Imaging Systems by Low-light Stretch Algorithm

  • Consumer demand for high quality image/video services led to growing trend in image quality enhancement study. Therefore, recent years was a period of substantial progress in this research field. Through careful observation of the image quality after processing by image enhancement algorithms, we perceived that the dark region in the image usually suffered loss of contrast to a certain extent. In this paper, the low-light stretch preprocessing algorithm is, hence, proposed to resolve the aforementioned issue. The proposed approach is evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively against the well-known histogram equalization and Photoshop curve adjustment. The evaluation results validate the efficiency and superiority of the low-light stretch over the benchmarking methods. In addition, we also propose the 255MHz-capable hardware implementation to ease the process of incorporating low-light stretch into real-time imaging systems, such as aerial surveillance and monitoring with drones and driving aiding systems.

Effects of Red/Blue Light Ratio and Short-term Light Quality Conversion on Growth and Anthocyanin Contents of Baby Leaf Lettuce (적색/청색광의 비율 및 수확 전 광질변환이 어린잎상추의 생육 및 안토시아닌 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • To establish the optimum artificial light illumination method for baby leaf lettuce in closed plant factory system, the effects of red/blue light quality and short-term light quality conversion on growth and anthocyanin content were investigated. The growth of 'Hongha' lettuce was most favorable under red single wavelength LED light after 23 days of treatment, sequentially followed by the growth under red/blue mixed light, blue light, and fluorescent light. Total anthocyanin content in the mixed red/blue light (R57-B43) was 4.1-fold and 6.9-fold increased compared to the red LED and fluorescent light, respectively. With increasing the blue light ratio to 43%, the growth of lettuce was significantly decreased, while the relative chlorophyll content and Hunter's $a^*$ value was increased, indicating that the red/blue light ratio inversely affects on growth and anthocyanin pigment development. By changing light quality from red to red/blue mixed light source (R57-B43) for 9 days before harvest, the growth rate decreased compared to the continuous red light illumination, while the anthocyanin content dramatically increased compared to either red LED or fluorescent light. Whereas, when the light source was changed to red light, the growth rate was increased but anthocyanin content was reversely decreased. The result demonstrated that both growth and anthocyanin expression could be effectively regulated by shifting of light quality between red and red/blue mixed light source at a specific growth stage of lettuce in a plant factory.

Varying Effects of Artificial Light on Plant Functional Metabolites (인공광 이용에 따른 작물의 기능성 물질의 차별적 증가)

  • BACKGROUND: Many studies on artificial lighting have been recently performed to investigate its effect on agricultural products with good quality. This review was aimed at comparing the effects of artificial light on functional metabolites of the plants that were grown in greenhouses and growth chamber. METHODS AND RESULTS: It has been summarized that artificial lighting both in growth chambers and greenhouses caused different functional metabolites patterns depending on light quality. Even though the same light quality was applied, different patterns in metabolites were observed in different plant species. For the same species, supplementation of the same light quality in both growth chambers and greenhouses did cause different functional metabolites patterns. CONCLUSION: Artificial lighting caused different patterns in functional metabolites of plants grown in greenhouses and growth chambers, depending on the light quality and/or plant species. The manipulation of plant growth and functional metabolites would be possible by engineering the light qualities, but knowledge on proper lighting condition depending on plant species and growth places would be necessary.

  • An optical sensor was developed to detect nanoparticles, turbid materials and microorganisms in water simultaneously. Three different light sources like UV-LED, NIR-LED and laser diode have been employed to develop the optical sensor based on the scattering light and fluorescence light. The sensor system has high selectivity and sensitivity, that it can be used to monitor the quality of drinking water.

Effects of Supplemental LED Lighting on Productivity and Fruit Quality of Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) Grown on the Bottom Bed of the Two-Bed Bench System (2단 베드 시스템의 하단부에서 자란 딸기의 생산성 및 과일 품질에 미치는 보광 LED의 효과)

  • The aim of this study was to confirm that effects of supplemental LED illumination on a strawberry yield and fruit quality when strawberry grown on a bottom bed to be deficient ambient light due to shading of a upper bed during cultivation by a two-bed bench system. A strawberry was cultivated as a drip irrigation system in the two-bed bench system filled with a strawberry exclusive media from October 2015 to January 2016. The upper and the bottom bed without LED illumination for growth of a strawberry were using as a control. For LED light treatments, from 10 am to 4 pm, we illuminated LEDs as $100{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ of light intensity by using blue, red, and mixing LED (blue plus red) on the strawberry plants of the bottom bed. In the yield of strawberry fruit, the strawberry grown on the bottom bed treated with the blue LED significantly increased compared with that of the bottom bed part control, and increased to by near 90% of the strawberry output of the upper bed part control. The soluble sugar content of strawberry fruit grown on the upper bed part control and on the bottom bed illuminated with blue or mixed LED was higher than that of red LED and the control of the bottom bed. The content of anthocyanin was the highest increased in the strawberry grown on the upper bed part control that received a lot of ambient light, however when comparing only the bottom bed, strawberry fruits grown on all LED treatments were higher than that of the control. Therefore, we considered that using of the blue LED light on the bottom bed of two-bed bench system during strawberry cultivation is advantageous for the increase of yield and improvement of fruit quality.

Influence of Red LED Treatment on Photosynthesis, Vegetative Growth and Fruit Quality in 'Fuji'/M.26 Apple Trees during Night (야간 적색 LED 처리가 'Fuji'/M.26 사과나무의 광합성, 영양생장 및 과실 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to find out the influence of red LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting on the photosynthesis, vegetative growth and fruit quality of 'Fuji'/M.26 adult apple tree during night after sunset. The photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate at daytime of red LED treatments was not different to those of the control. However, the stomatal conductance and transpiration rate at the nighttime of red LED treatments were lower than those of the control, and the red LED lighting during night after sunset was not induce to photosynthesize at nighttime. In the leaf characteristics, the red LED lighting seemed to increase leaf area and C/N ratio, but decrease SPAD value. The bourse shoot length of the red LED treatments was shorter than that of the control. In the fruit quality, the red LED lighting seemed to increase ethylene production, respiration rate, soluble solid content and fruit red color, and especially the fruit red color tend to increase as the red LED lighting time was longer. In conclusion, the red LED lighting during night after sunset of 'Fuji'/M.26 apple tree promoted the fruit maturation.

Selection of Supplemental Light Source for Greenhouse Cultivation of Pepper during Low Radiation Period through Growth and Economic Analysis (생육 및 경제성 분석을 통한 약광기 고추의 온실재배를 위한 적정 보광 광원 선정)

  • To produce a high quality crop, light is an essential environmental factor in greenhouse cultivation. In the winter season, solar radiation is weak than other season. Therefore, using supplemental light during a low radiation period can increase the crop growth and yield. This study was conducted to select the economical supplemental light source for greenhouse cultivation in pepper during the low radiation period. The green pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Super Cheongyang') was transplanted on 5 September 2019. Supplemental lighting treatment was conducted from 1 January 2020 to 31 March 2020. RB LED (red and blue LED, red:blue = 7:3), W LED (white LED, R:G:B = 5:3:2), and HPS (high-pressure sodium lamp) were used as the supplemental light source. Non-treatment was used as the control. The plant height, SPAD, and number of nodes of pepper plants have no significant differences by supplemental light sources. However, the number of ramifications plants was the greatest in RB LED light source. Moreover, supplemental lighting increased photosynthesis of the pepper plant, and especially, the RB LED had the highest photosynthesis rate during supplemental lighting period. Also, the yield of pepper increased in the supplemental lighting treatment than in the control, and the RB LED had the greatest yield than other light sources. The electricity consumption was the highest in W LED and the lowest in HPS light. Through the economic analysis, the RB LED had high economic efficiency. In conclusion, these results suggest that using RB LED for supplemental light source during low radiation in pepper greenhouse increase the yield and economic feasibility.
