Cell Gap Variation Tolerant Liquid Crystal Display

  • We report a cell gap variation tolerant liquid crystal display(LCD). Since the cell gap variation of the LCD results in the variation of brightness and contrast ratio, we should control carefully the process to get the uniform cell gap. For the projector application, this is more significant and the one reason of the low yield. We observed that the brightness variation of LCD is suppressed by insertion of dielectric layer between the pixel electrode and liquid crystal.

  • It is analyzed with regard to LCD in Korea that national patent application, applicant patent application, IPC patent application. The Trends of patent application concentrated LCD manufacturing process and device, case and a cell of liquid crystal. Therefore, the future research and developments must be centralized these ranges. It is needed for competitive power and original technology that the search and analysis of the previous patent.

  • LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)는 디지털 기기의 주요 구성 요소이며, 모든 크기의 FPD (Flat Panel Display) 시장에서 지배적인 시장점유율을 보인다. 그러나 많은 전문가들은 LCD 산업이 수년 내에 OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes), 3차원 디스플레이, 플렉서블 디스플레이와 같은 차세대 디스플레이 기술의 강력한 도전에 직면할 것이라고 예상한다. 이러한 경쟁환경에서 LCD 산업이 살아남기 위한 방안으로 본 연구에서는 LCD 산업의 경쟁력의 원천을 밝혀내고, 이를 극대화하는 전략적 방향을 제시한다. 이를 위해 먼저 LCD 산업구조와 가치사슬을 분석하여 LCD 산업의 경쟁력을 제고하기 위한 기본적인 전략적 대안을 개발한다. 이 단계에서 얻어진 통찰력을 바탕으로, 인과지도(causal loop diagram)와 시스템 다이나믹스 (system dynamics) 방법론을 활용하여 기존의 LCD 산업구조에서 판매량, 시장점유율 및 이익 등의 핵심 지표에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 구조적 특징을 규명한다. 또한, 여기서의 다이나믹스 모형을 바탕으로, LCD 제조업자의 관점에서 프로세스 역량을 극대화할 수 있는 전략적 대안을 모색한다.

  • In this study, we have investigated the characteristics of the response time and the viewing angle on twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) and amorphous (a) TN-LCD without rubbing. To measure the transmission-voltage, response time, and viewing angle characteristics, we prepared three kinds of LC cells and then studied the surface liquid crystal alignment effect. We studied that the response time on a-TN-LCD is fast compared to the TN-LCD. We suggest that the weak anchoring strength is attributed to the fast response time on a-TN-LCD. Also, we obtained the uniform viewing angle characteristics on a-TN-LCD. From these results, we consider that the liquid crystal alignment on LCD device are very important factor for electro-optical characteristics.

An RGB to RGBY Color Conversion Algorithm for Liquid Crystal Display Using RGW Pixel with Two-Field Sequential Driving Method

  • This paper proposes an RGB to RGBY color conversion algorithm for liquid crystal display (LCD) using RGW pixel structure with two-field (yellow and blue) sequential driving method. The proposed algorithm preserves the hue and saturation of the original color by maintaining the RGB ratio, and it increases the luminance. The performance of the proposed RGBY conversion algorithm is verified using the MATLAB simulation with 24 images of Kodak lossless true color image suite. The simulation results of average color difference CIEDE2000 (${\delta}E^*_{00}$) and scaling factor are 0.99 and 1.89, respectively. These results indicate that the average brightness is increased 1.89 times compared to LCD using conventional RGB pixel structure, without increasing the power consumption and degrading the image quality.

  • We investigated the electro-optica](EO) performances of the super twisted nematic liquid crystal display(STN-LCD) on the polyimide(PI) surface using polymer film. The NLC(Nematic Liquid Crystal) pretilt angles generated are about 18$^{\circ}$by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates. However, the pretilt angle are at about 13$^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than on thin plastic substrate. Monodomain alignment of the plastic STN-LCD can be observed. A stable voltage-transmittance(V-T) curve of the plastic STN-LCD was observed on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film. Also, a faster response time for the plastic STN-LCD on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film can be achieved.

  • We have developed a RGB polymer dispersed liquid crystal film (RGB PDLC). To obtain the color display, color pigments are mixed in the prepolymer. We have presented an electro-optical performance of our cell and analyzed the electro optical properties for varying LC/ pre-polymer ratio and polymer type.

  • Generally, the compromising electromagnetic emanations are generated from LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) monitor which is typical output component of computer. Because display information transmitted to LCD monitor is included in these emanations, there are risks about information leakage of monitor by eavesdropping of leaked signal. So, analysis about possibility of information leakage is necessary because electromagnetic security through the electromagnetic emanations is being at issue. In this paper, the possibility of display information leakage are demonstrated by analyzing the electromagnetic emanations from desktop and laptop monitors. The characteristics of leaked signal from LCD monitor is verified by analyzing display mechanism and the electromagnetic emanations are measured in the long distance by eavesdropping experiment. Also, threat of information leakage is confirmed by recovering display information with several signal processing technique and comprising with target display.

  • In-plane switching characteristics of PI rubbed ITO sandwich cell with low molecule FLC (ferroelectric liquid crystal) surface was investigated. FLC on the surface is governed by the applying frequency and surface condition. By controlling the Ps (spontaneous polarization) direction of dual FLC surfaces, switching characteristics are improved without change of cell structure.
