Liquid crystal alignment and pretilt angle generation using oblique UV light irradiation on polymer surface (경사진 자외선조사를 이용한 셀의 프리틸트각의 입사각도 의존성)

  • In this study, we investigated the generation of pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a cell with oblique non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment of the NLC is obtained in a cell with an angle of incidence of 70∼85$^{\circ}$on PI surface. We consider that the monodomain alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force effect due to Photo-depolymerization of polymer on PI surfaces. Also, pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 3$^{\circ}$ with an angle of incidence of 70∼75$^{\circ}$. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces.

  • In this paper, we studied on electro-optical (EO) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD. We obtained that uniform LC alignment in TN-LCD with linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface increases according to increasing irradiation time for 10 to 60 min. The voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD with UV light irradiation time of 60 min were almost same in comparison with conventional TN-LCD were observed. From the results, we suggest that photo-aligned TN-LCD with LPUV light irradiation on PI surface is useful in applying LCD as for rubbing-free treatment method.

LC-MS/MS Screening Method for Radical Scavenging Active Compounds in Extracts of Ulmus pumila Cortex (유근피 추출물의 radical 소거 활성 성분에 대한 LC-MS/MS 스크리닝 분석법)

  • The radical scavenging activity measurement system linked with liquid chromatography (LC) is a useful tool for identifying the radical scavenging active compound in a sample composed of numerous compounds such as plant extracts. Using this system, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were measured on extracts of Ulmus pumila cortex, which is known as an herbal medicine with antioxidant activity. Mass spectrometry (MS) was performed on the identified radical scavenging active compounds to identify the four components estimated to be procyanidin B2, procyanidin B3, catechin-7-O-β-D-apiofuranoside, and catechin-5-O-β-D-apiofuranoside, respectively. In order to compare the relative contents between extract samples, multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode analysis conditions were set for the four compounds in order to examine the possibility of comparing the content of radical scavenging active compounds in Ulmus pumila cortex extract using LC-MS/MS. As a result of the relative content comparison, it was found that the higher the ethanol concentration of the extraction solvent, the higher the content of radical scavenging active compounds. As with the results of measuring the radical scavenging activity of each extract, it was confirmed that the content difference of three of the compounds (all except the compound estimated as procyanidin B3) was not significantly observed in the extracts with an ethanol concentration of 50% or more.

  • We have presented in the paper preliminary results on physical characteristic parameters of a photopolymer LPPF 301 CP. The weak azimuthal anchoring energy (${\sim}5.0{\times}10^{-6}J/m^2$) of a photopolymer was measured by using a simple optical method. High pretilt up to $30^{\circ}$ has been achieved in the photoaligned cell by irradiating an obliquely incident UV light.

  • The generation of pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD with oblique P-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on the two kinds of the soluble polyimide (PI) surfaces containing trifluoromethyl moieties were investigated. The generated pretilt angle of NLC is about 2.5$^{\circ}$with P-polarized UV light irradiation of 20$^{\circ}$on PI-3 surface at 20 min.; However pretilt angle of about 0.5$^{\circ}$are observed on PI-1 and PI-2 surfaces. The generated pretilt angle of NLC on PI-3 surface may be attributed to the trifluoromethyl moieties attached to the lateral benzene rings. The voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD with P-polarized UV light irradiation of 20$^{\circ}$on PI-1 surface at 20 min were almost same in comparison with the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD. However, the high threshold voltage and slow response are observed on PI-3 surface. Also, the decay time $\tau$$\sub$d/ of photo-aligned TN-LCD is attributed to the anchoring energy of NLC.

LC-PDA/MS/MS Analysis of Glucosinolates in Dolsan Leaf Mustard Kimchi and Dolsan Leaf Mustard Pickles (돌산갓 김치와 돌산갓 피클의 Glucosinolates의 LC-PDA/MS/MS분석)

  • Changes in the concentrations of glucosinolates and related compounds in different extracts of Dolsan leaf mustard kimchi (DLMK) and Dolsan leaf mustard pickles (DLMP) were during storage investigated. Samples were kept at 0oC for 35 days and collected at 7 day intervals. The leaves and stems of DLMK and DLMP were refluxed for 24 h with 50% acetonitrile, and the extracts were analyzed by LC-PDA/MS/MS. The main glucosinolates detected in DLMK were sinigrin, gluconapoleiferin, glucobrassicanapin, and gluconapin, whereas those in DLMP were sinigrin, gluconapoleiferin, glucobrassicanapin, glucobrassicin, and glucoerucin. Sinigrin concentrations were quantified by UV absorption at 228 nm. Sinigrin concentrations in the leaves and stems of DLMK on the day of preparation were 2.14 mg/g and 2.25 mg/g, respectively, and those on day 35 after preparation were 1.25 mg/g and 1.00 mg/g, respectively. DLMP showed a similar trend: the concentrations in the leaves and stems on the day of preparation were 2.04 mg/g and 0.29 mg/g, respectively, whereas those on day 35 after preparation were 0.59 mg/g and 0.41 mg/g, respectively. Thus, sinigrin concentrations decreased during storage.

Analysis of Scutellaria baicaleinsis Georgi (Scutellariae Radix) by LC-DAD and LC-ESI/MS

  • In this study, baicalin, as a marker substance of Scutellariae Radix, was quantitatively analyzed by a high performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detector (HPLC-DAD). We identified wogonoside, baicalein, and wogonin in the Scutellariae Radix by a high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometer (HPLC-ESI-MS). The baicalin was separated on a Xterra C18 column ($5{\mu}m$, $4.6{\times}250mm$) using mobile phase consisting of 38% acetonitrile in 0.68% phosphoric acid. The baicalin spectrum in the Scutellariae Radix extracts was coincided by comparing with UV-visible spectrum (200-550 nm) of baicalin standard in the library. The amount of baicalin in Scutellariae Radix was 10.46%, which is higher than KFDA's guideline. The marker substances of Scutellariae Radix showed a strong base peak $[M]^+$ in the positive detection mode following as; baicalin (m/z; $271[MH^+-sugar]^+$, $447[M+H]^+$), wogonoside (m/z; $285[MH^+-sugar]^+$, $461[M+H]^+$), baicalein (m/z; $271\;[M+H]^+$), wogonin (m/z; $285[M+H]^+$). These results are consistent with the fragment pattern and molecular weight of standard components from literature.

Investigation on Reaction Products From Oxidative Coupling Reactions of 1-Naphthol By Manganese Oxide (망간산화물에 의한 1-Naphthol의 산화-결합 반응에 따른 반응산물 연구)

  • In this study, abiotic transformation of 1-naphthol(1-NP) via oxidative-coupling reaction and its reaction products were investigated in the presence of Mn oxides. The reaction products were characterized for their relative polarity using solvent extraction experiment and reverse-phase HPLC, and for structure using CCMS and LC/MS, and for absorption characteristics using UV-Vis spectrometry. The reaction products present in aqueous phase were more polar than parent naphthol and comprised of 1,4-naphthoquinon(1,4-NPQ) and oligomers such as dimers and trimers. Hydrophilic component present in water phase after solvent$(CH_2Cl_2)$ extractions was identified as naphthol polymerized products having molecular weight(m/z) ranging from 400 to 2,000, and showed similar UV-Vis. absorption characteristics to that of foil fulvic acid. Transformation of 1,4-NPQ, which is non-reactive to Mn oxide, to the polymerized products via cross-coupling reaction in the presence of 1-NP was also verified. In this experimental conditions(20.5 mg/L, 1-NP, 2.5 g/L $MnO_2$, pH 5), the transformation of 1-NP into the oligomers and polymerized products were about 83% of initial 1-NP concentrations, and more than 30% of the reaction products was estimated to be water insoluble fractions, not extracted by $H_2O$ methanol. Results from this study suggest that Mn oxide-mediated treatment of naphthol contaminated soils can achieve risk reduction through the formation of oligomers md polymer precipitation.

A Study on Antioxidant, Skin-Whitening and UV Absorption Effect of Beta vulagaris Using Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SM4 (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SM4 를 이용한 레드비트 생물전환물의 항산화, 피부 미백과 자외선 흡수 효능 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm the skin whitening and UV absorption effects of bioconverted Beta vulagaris (BBE) using Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SM4, and the effects were evaluated by measuring total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), radical elimination activity (RSA), and tyrosinase activity inhibition (TAI). TPC and TFC of BBE were 25.0 mg GAE/g DM and 8.05 mg QE/g DM, which were 1.3 and 1.1 times higher than hot-water extract (HWE) respectively. RSA, an indicator of antioxidant activity, and TAI, an indicator of skin-whitening effect, were 36.8%, and 68.6%, respectively, 1.1 and 1.2 times higher than that of HWE. UVA and UVB absorption of BBE were 21.4 and 87.6%, which was 1.4 and 1.7 times higher than that of HWE respectively. When main substances of BBE were analyzed using LC-MS/MS, kaempferol and isorhamnetin, a type of polyphenols known to have high antioxidant and skin-whitening effects, were identified. As a results, BBE is expected to be used as a functional cosmetic material as it has excellent antioxidant, skin whitening, and UV absorption properties.
