A Transflective Liquid Crystal Display Driven by the Fringe Field Using a Liquid Crystal with a Negative Dielectric Anisotropy

  • We have proposed a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) driven by the fringe field using a liquid crystal (LC) with a negative dielectric anisotropy. The device used different twist angles of the liquid crystals (LC) in the transmissive (T) and the reflective (R) regions when voltage is applied. With the optimization of the pixel electrode width and the distance between them, the LC directors in the R- and T-regions can be rotated by about $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ on an average, respectively. As a result, a high image quality transflective LCD with a single gap, a single gamma, and a wide viewing angle characteristics in both the R- and T- regions can be realized.

Improvement of blood lipid metabolism and obesity through the administration of mixed lactic acid bacteria including Lactobacillus plantarum K-1 in mice fed a high-fat diet

  • We investigated the effects of single and combined administrations of Lactobacillus species (L. plantarum, LP; L. gasseri, LG; L. casei, LC) on blood lipid metabolism and obesity in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). The mice were continuously supplemented with LP, LP/LG, or LP/LG/LC, along with HFD, for 12 weeks. The consumption of HFD led to significant increases in body weight, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels compared to the normal control group. However, administration of LP, LP/LG, or LP/LG/LC to HFD-fed mice reduced body weight gain and showed a tendency to suppress the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol, while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels. The HFD group exhibited increased abdominal fat weight and larger adipocytes in the epididymal adipose tissue compared to the NC group. However, the administered probiotics led to a significant reduction in adipocyte size with decreasing tendency in abdominal fat weight compared with the HFD group. Additionally, the deposition of giant vesicular fat cells in the liver of the HFD group considerably decreased in the probiotic-administered group. Microbiome analysis revealed an imbalance in intestinal microbes in the HFD group, characterized by lower Bacteroidetes and higher Proteobacteria ratios. However, probiotic administration tended to restore the microbial distribution by controlling the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria, resulting in decreased Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria/Bacteroidetes ratios. These results suggest that single and combined administration of LP and other probiotics holds enormous potential in reducing obesity in HFD-fed mice as they regulate lipid metabolism, reduce adipocyte size, and restore the balance of intestinal microbes.

  • A novel transflective-type LC mode with good display performance has been developed In order to drive both transmissive and reflective modes simultaneously without any modulation of gamma in a single-gap structure, we have introduced a new design concept in the reflective region, where the capacitance is separated into liquid crystal($C_{LC}$} and organic layer($C_{OL}$), playing a key role as a voltage divider in our cap-divided VA-mode. With this cap-divided method having both merits of simplifying process and good legibility, we have achieved good optical characteristics such as high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle in a single-gap homeotropic panel design.

  • 본 논문은 기존의 1차 예측 기법과 반복 제어기법을 이용하여 LC 필터와 정류 부하 등의 비선형 부하를 가지는 UPS 인버터의 출력전압 파형의 개선에 관한 연구이다. 기존의 1차 예측 기법은 정류부하에 대하여 우수한 특성을 가지므로 출력전류의 예측에 적합하나 정류 부하와 같은 비선형적인 부하의 정상 상태 오차를 보상하기에는 충분하지 못한 단점을 가진다. 따라서, 정상상태 오차를 최소화 할 수 있는 반복제어 기법을 적용하여 UPS 출력전압을 개선시키고자 한다. 제안된 제어기법에 대한 타당성을 시뮬레이션으로 검증하고, 이를 바탕으로 LC 필터를 가지는 3 kVA, 60 Hz UPS시스템을 제작하여 실험으로 검증한다

  • 본 논문에서는 LTCC 기술을 이용한 다중기판 2단 LC 대역통과 필터를 제안하였다. 이 필터는 서로 다른 유전율을 갖는 세라믹 재료를 사용하였다. 인덕터는 손실과 기생성분을 감소시키기 위하여 저유전율의 재료에 설계되었다. 반면에 커패시터는 단면적을 감쇄시키기 위하여 고유전율의 재료에 설계되었다. 본 논문에서 제안된 대역통과 필터의 전체크기는 2.5${\times}$2.5${\times}$l.4mm$^3$이며 949 MHz의 중심주파수 및 3.5 dB의 삽입손실과 118MHz의 대역폭을 갖는다. 성능은 각각의 LC 공진기 사이의 커플링 커패시터에 의하여 조절하였다.

Probiotic bacteria의 생장에 대한 막걸리슬러지의 이용 (Utilization of Makgeolli sludge for growth of probiotic bacteria)

  • A number of health benefits have been claimed for probiotic bacteria such as Bifidobacterium (B) spp. Lactobacillus(L) acidophilus, and Lactococcus(Lc) cremoris. Viability of probiotic bacteria is important in order to provide health benefits. Only a limited culture media for the test purpose of probiotic bacteria are commercially available (MRS broth), but the media for large-scale propagation of viable cells which are able to be used as food additive are not available. The manufacture of a low priced and preferred novel medium for probiotic bacteria was therefore, attempted using whey protein concentrate(WPC) and Makgeolli sludge as a starting material. The effect of WPC and Makgeolli sludge on the growth of four strains (B. bifidum 15696, B. longum 15707, L. acidophilus CH-2, and Lc. cremoris 20076) was investigated. Medium prepared such as WPC, Makgeolli sludge, and WPC+Makgeolli sludge(WPCMs). It was observed that the growth of 4 strains (B. bifidum 15696, B. longum 15707, L. acidophilus CH-2, and Lc. cremoris 20076) was stimulated by Makgeolli sludge, WPC, WPCMs. Especially, Viable cell number of 4 strains in the WPCMs were higher than that of the single media. These result suggest the possibility that Makgeolli and WPC, acts as a growth factor for the growth of probiotic bacteria.

  • For small capacity rectifier circuits such as these for consumer electronics and appliances. capacitor input type rectifier circuits are generally used Consequently. various harmonics generated within the power system become a serious Problem. Various studies of this effect have been presented previously. However. most of these employ switching devices, such as FETs and the like. The absence of switching devices makes systems more tolerant to over -load, and brings low radio noise benefits. We propose a power factor correction scheme using a LC resonant in commercial frequency without switching devices. In this method. It makes a sinusoidal wave by widening conduction period using the current resonance in commercial frequency. Hence, the harmonic characteristics can be significantly improved. where the lower order harmonics. such as the fifth and seventh orders are much reduced. The result are confirmed by the theoretical and expermental implementations.

  • We demonstrated a liquid crystal display (LCD) mode with a single polarizer based on the array of a switchable microlens consisting of a circular stop mask and its complementary open mask. The focused beam passed through the open mask and thus the bright state was obtained, while the defocused beam was blocked by the stop mask and the complementary open mask. It is expected that our single-polarizer LCD mode is applicable to low cost displays.

  • When a dielectric layer, in-cell retarder (ICR) is formed between electrode and LC layer to get a single gap transflective fringe-field switching (FFS) display, the operating voltage ($V_{op}$) is highly increased due to the thickness of dielectric material. But, we also knew the phenomenon that the increasing rate of Vop is different whether the 1st common electrode was composed of plate type or slit type. In this paper, the common electrode in transmissive part was composed of slit type which had less steepness effect of the Vop and in reflective part was composed of plate type. The rubbing angle of reflective part can be adjusted properly to match the voltage dependent transmittance and reflectance.
