Objective: Increasing food safety demands in the animal product market have created a need for a system to trace the food distribution process, from the manufacturer to the retailer, and genetic traceability is an effective method to trace the origin of animal products. In this study, we successfully achieved the farm tracing of 6,018 multi-breed pigs, using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers strictly selected through least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) feature selection. Methods: We performed farm tracing of domesticated pig (Sus scrofa) from SNP markers and selected the most relevant features for accurate prediction. Considering multi-breed composition of our data, we performed feature selection using LASSO penalization on 4,002 SNPs that are shared between breeds, which also includes 179 SNPs with small between-breed difference. The 100 highest-scored features were extracted from iterative simulations and then evaluated using machine-leaning based classifiers. Results: We selected 1,341 SNPs from over 45,000 SNPs through iterative LASSO feature selection, to minimize between-breed differences. We subsequently selected 100 highest-scored SNPs from iterative scoring, and observed high statistical measures in classification of breeding farms by cross-validation only using these SNPs. Conclusion: The study represents a successful application of LASSO feature selection on multi-breed pig SNP data to trace the farm information, which provides a valuable method and possibility for further researches on genetic traceability.

Classification systems can significantly assist the medical sector by allowing for the precise and quick diagnosis of diseases. As a result, both doctors and patients will save time. A possible way for identifying risk variables is to use machine learning algorithms. Non-surgical technologies, such as machine learning, are trustworthy and effective in categorizing healthy and heart-disease patients, and they save time and effort. The goal of this study is to create a medical intelligent decision support system based on machine learning for the diagnosis of heart disease. We have used a mixed feature creation (MFC) technique to generate new features from the UCI Cleveland Cardiology dataset. We select the most suitable features by using Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), Recursive Feature Elimination with Random Forest feature selection (RFE-RF) and the best features of both LASSO RFE-RF (BLR) techniques. Cross-validated and grid-search methods are used to optimize the parameters of the estimator used in applying these algorithms. and classifier performance assessment metrics including classification accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, precision, and F1-Score, of each classification model, along with execution time and RMSE the results are presented independently for comparison. Our proposed work finds the best potential outcome across all available prediction models and improves the system's performance, allowing physicians to diagnose heart patients more accurately.
When large-scale gene expression data are analyzed using lasso regression, the estimation of regression coefficients may be unstable due to the highly correlated expression values between associated genes. This irregularity, in which the coefficients are reduced by L1 regularization, causes difficulty in variable selection. To address this problem, we propose a regression model which exploits the repetitive bootstrapping of gene expression values prior to lasso regression. The genes selected with high frequency were used to build each regression model. Our experimental results show that several genes were consistently selected in all regression models and we verified that these genes were not false positives. We also identified that the sign distribution of the regression coefficients of the selected genes from each model was correlated to the real dependent variables.
A main goal of pharmacogenomics studies is to predict individual's drug responsiveness based on high dimensional genetic variables. Due to a large number of variables, feature selection is required in order to reduce the number of variables. The selected features are used to construct a predictive model using machine learning algorithms. In the present study, we applied several hybrid feature selection methods such as combinations of logistic regression, ReliefF, TurF, random forest, and LASSO to a next generation sequencing data set of 400 epilepsy patients. We then applied the selected features to machine learning methods including random forest, gradient boosting, and support vector machine as well as a stacking ensemble method. Our results showed that the stacking model with a hybrid feature selection of random forest and ReliefF performs better than with other combinations of approaches. Based on a 5-fold cross validation partition, the mean test accuracy value of the best model was 0.727 and the mean test AUC value of the best model was 0.761. It also appeared that the stacking models outperform than single machine learning predictive models when using the same selected features.

Recognizing the size and location of prostate cancer is critical for prostate cancer diagnosis, treatment, and predicting prognosis. This paper proposes a model to classify the tumor region and normal tissue with cross-sectional visual images of prostatectomy tissue. We used specimen images of 44 prostate cancer patients who received prostatectomy at Gachon University Gil Hospital. A total of 289 prostate slice images consist of 200 slices including tumor region and 89 slices not including tumor region. Images were divided based on the presence or absence of tumor, and a total of 93 features from each slice image were extracted using Radiomics: 18 first order, 24 GLCM, 16 GLRLM, 16 GLSZM, 5 NGTDM, and 14 GLDM. We compared feature selection techniques such as LASSO, ANOVA, SFS, Ridge and RF, LR, SVM classifiers for the model's high performances. We evaluated the model's performance with AUC of the ROC curve. The results showed that the combination of feature selection techniques LASSO, Ridge, and classifier RF could be best with an AUC of 0.99±0.005.
In this paper, the purpose is evaluation of the effect of using fractal feature in machine learning based pancreatic tumor classification. We used the data that Pancreas CT series 469 case including 1995 slice of benign and 1772 slice of malignant. Feature selection is implemented from 109 feature to 7 feature by Lasso regularization. In Fractal feature, fractal dimension is obtained by box-counting method, and hurst coefficient is calculated range data of pixel value in ROI. As a result, there were significant differences in both benign and malignancies tumor. Additionally, we compared the classification performance between model without fractal feature and model with fractal feature by using support vector machine. The train model with fractal feature showed statistically significant performance in comparison with train model without fractal feature.
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy-based brain-computer interface (fNIRS-based BCI) has been receiving much attention. However, we are practically constrained to obtain a lot of fNIRS data by inherent hemodynamic delay. For this reason, when employing machine learning techniques, a problem due to the high-dimensional feature vector may be encountered, such as deteriorated classification accuracy. In this study, we employ an elastic net-based feature selection which is one of the embedded methods and demonstrate the utility of which by analyzing the results. Using the fNIRS dataset obtained from 18 participants for classifying brain activation induced by mental arithmetic and idle state, we calculated classification accuracies after performing feature selection while changing the parameter α (weight of lasso vs. ridge regularization). Grand averages of classification accuracy are 80.0 ± 9.4%, 79.3 ± 9.6%, 79.0 ± 9.2%, 79.7 ± 10.1%, 77.6 ± 10.3%, 79.2 ± 8.9%, and 80.0 ± 7.8% for the various values of α = 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5, respectively, and are not statistically different from the grand average of classification accuracy estimated with all features (80.1 ± 9.5%). As a result, no difference in classification accuracy is revealed for all considered parameter α values. Especially for α = 0.5, we are able to achieve the statistically same level of classification accuracy with even 16.4% features of the total features. Since elastic net-based feature selection can be easily applied to other cases without complicated initialization and parameter fine-tuning, we can be looking forward to seeing that the elastic-based feature selection can be actively applied to fNIRS data.

Anomaly detection of Machine Learning such as PCA anomaly detection and CNN image classification has been focused on cross-sectional data. In this paper, two approaches has been suggested to apply ML techniques for identifying the failure time of big time series data. PCA anomaly detection to identify time rows as normal or abnormal was suggested by converting subjects identification problem to time domain. CNN image classification was suggested to identify the failure time by re-structuring of time series data, which computed the correlation matrix of one minute data and converted to tiff image format. Also, LASSO, one of feature selection methods, was applied to select the most affecting variables which could identify the failure status. For the empirical study, time series data was collected in seconds from a power generator of 214 components for 25 minutes including 20 minutes before the failure time. The failure time was predicted and detected 9 minutes 17 seconds before the failure time by PCA anomaly detection, but was not detected by the combination of LASSO and PCA because the target variable was binary variable which was assigned on the base of the failure time. CNN image classification with the train data of 10 normal status image and 5 failure status images detected just one minute before.

Chronic illnesses are among the most common serious problems affecting human health. Early diagnosis of chronic diseases can assist to avoid or mitigate their consequences, potentially decreasing mortality rates. Using machine learning algorithms to identify risk factors is an exciting strategy. The issue with existing feature selection approaches is that each method provides a distinct set of properties that affect model correctness, and present methods cannot perform well on huge multidimensional datasets. We would like to introduce a novel model that contains a feature selection approach that selects optimal characteristics from big multidimensional data sets to provide reliable predictions of chronic illnesses without sacrificing data uniqueness.[1] To ensure the success of our proposed model, we employed balanced classes by employing hybrid balanced class sampling methods on the original dataset, as well as methods for data pre-processing and data transformation, to provide credible data for the training model. We ran and assessed our model on datasets with binary and multivalued classifications. We have used multiple datasets (Parkinson, arrythmia, breast cancer, kidney, diabetes). Suitable features are selected by using the Hybrid feature model consists of Lassocv, decision tree, random forest, gradient boosting,Adaboost, stochastic gradient descent and done voting of attributes which are common output from these methods.Accuracy of original dataset before applying framework is recorded and evaluated against reduced data set of attributes accuracy. The results are shown separately to provide comparisons. Based on the result analysis, we can conclude that our proposed model produced the highest accuracy on multi valued class datasets than on binary class attributes.[1]
