  • Objective : In the present study, we investigated genetic distribution of eight single nucleotide polymorphisms of PON1 between Dampness and Phlegm and non Dampness and Phlegm pattern identification(PI) among Korean stroke patients. Materials and Methods : One hundred forty stroke subject without Dampness and Phlegm and fifty eight stroke subjects with Dampness and Phlegm were participated in this study. After informed consents, eight single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) in PON1 of each subjects were identified by DNA sequencing and primer extension method and statistical analysis was performed to determine the significant difference between Dampness and Phlegm and non Dampness and Phlegm groups. Results : Among anthropometric characteristics and blood parameters, waist circumference and total cholesterol were significantly higher in Dampness and Phlegm. Among 8 SNPs of PON1, frequency of M allele and subjects with M allele in L55M SNP were significantly higher in Dampness and Phlegm group (p=0.0032 and p=0.0053, respectively) but subjects with T allele in C-2033T SNP were lower in Dampness and Phlegm group(p=0.0302). Effect of L55M and C-2033T on Dampness and Phlegm were 3.07% and 1.75%, respectively. Conclusion : Our results suggest that L55M SNP in exon and C-2033T in promoter region of PON1 maybe affect to Dampness and Phlegm pattern identification. However, further study should be carried out to find out the detailed mechanism how L55M and C-2033T can affect Dampness and Phlegm stroke patients.

  • Limonene is orange flavored natural material that is mainly contained in mandarine and lemon peels. D-limonene was extracted from cold-storaged mandarine peel by using Soxhlet extractor at $120^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours with ethanol as solvent. Henry constants of d-limonene and impurity were calculated as $H_{Lim}=8.55$ and $H_{imp}=0.223$ from the result of HPLC analysis. 4-bed SMB of limonene simulation with $0.46{\times}25cm$ columns was conducted by using Aspen chromatography program. Then effective condition for purity was found by changing $m_2$ and $m_3$ values in triangle diagram. The highest purity was 98.59% at $m_2=2.57$, $m_3=9.55$. For this case, feed, desorbent, extract, and raffinate flow rates were 1 mL/min, 1.19 mL/min, 0.857 mL/min and 1.34 mL/min, respectively. Scale-up simulation was also conducted by increasing column diameter from 0.46 cm to 1.6 cm for getting the same efficiency. The increased flow rates were 12 mL/min, 14 mL/min, 10 mL/min, and 16 mL/min for feed, desorbent, extract, and raffinate. It was possible to scale-up with maintaining same limonene purity because linear isotherms of limonene and impurity were assumed.

  • The effect of initial cell concentration on the characteristics of ethanol fermentation was investigated in the batch fermentation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 24858. The characteristics were investigated in the range of 60 to 230 g/l of the initial sugar concentrations and 0.5 to 85 g/l of the initial cell concentrations. When the initial cell concentrations were 27 g/l for 60 g/l of the initial sugar and 85 g/l for 230 g/l, the fermentation time required for the complete consumption of the initial sugar was one hour, respectively. The ethanol productivity increased with the initial cell concentration so that, in the case of 100 g/l of initial sugar, the productivity rose up to 55 g/l/hr at 55 g/l of the initial cell concentration. The specific growth rate decreased according to the increase in the initial biomass concentration and finally became zero at around 25 g/l of the cell concentration regardless of the initial sugar concentration. The specific ethanol production rate was constant as 1.02 g/l/hr up to 150 g/l of the initial sugar. However, the rates decreased sharply with the augmentation of concentration of the initial sugar above 160 g/l. The overall ethanol yield represented a constant value, 0.475 g/g irrespective of the initial cell and sugar concentrations. The overall biomass yietd showed a trend to diminish in values with the biomass and ultimately to reach zero more than 25 g/l of the initial cell concentration.

  • In 1.55.mu.m DFB lasers with two non-AR mirrors, I have analyzed the effect of the sturctures of indes and/or gain gratings and mirror positions on the threshold gains, the lasing frequencies, and the beam profiles in longitudinal direction of lasers. I have obtained the optimum condition of static characteristics that ${\Delta}{\Omega}$(the phase difference betweeen index grating and gain grating is 3${\pi}$/4, $({\kappa}L)_{i}$=4~6 in case of $({\kappa}L)_{i}$=0.9 and $({\kappa}L)_{i}$=3~5 in case of $({\kappa}L)_{i}$=0.7. The modal selectivity and intensity uniformity of this optimum condition are 2~2.5 times better than those of the gain-coupled DFB lasers ${\Delta}{\Omega}$=0). The gain-coupled DFB lasers${\Delta}{\Omega}$=0) have 10$^{10) times better modal selectivity and intensity uniformity than the loss-coupled DFB lasers(TEX>${\Delta}{\Omega}$=${\pi}$).

  • Effects of dietary calcium(Ca), protein, and phosphorus(P) intake on bone mineral density (BMD) were investigated in 129 Korean premenopausal women(age 31-54 years) without diagnosed disease. BMD was measured at the spine(vertebrae L2-4) and femur(neck, Ward's triangle and trochanter). By stepwise multiple regression analysis it was shown that protein, Ca, and P intakes affected most significantly on BMD at the vertebrae L2-4, protein and P intakes affected most significantly on BMD at the femoral neck and Ward's triangle, and body mass index(BMI) affected most significantly on BMD at the trochanteric region. When ate-matched BMD % at the vertebrae L2-4 and all femoral sites was grouped by three levels(<90%, 90-99%, >=100%), only at the vertebrae L2-4>=100% and 90-99% groups had higher Ca intakes than <90% groups. When Ca, protein and P intakes of the recommended level for Korean(RDA) were grouped by three levels (Ca or P ; <=650mg/d, 650-750mg/d, >=750mg/d, Protein ; <=55g/d, 55-60g/d, >=65g/d), only at the vertebrae L2-4>55g/d of protein intake had higher age-matched BMD % than <=55g/d intake, >=750mg/d of Ca and P intakes, age-matched BMD % than <=650mg/d. In RDA range of Ca, protein, and P intakes, age-matched BMD % of the vertebrae L2-4 and all femoral sites was greater than 90%. Correlation between Ca intake and vertebral BMD was examined closer. There was more significant linear correlation between vertebral BMD and Ca intake below 800mg/d(r=0.346, p<0.0001)than above(r=0.376, p<0.019), implying a threshold effect and vertebral BMD was better expressed as a function of the logarithm of calcium intake(r=0.3881, p<0.0001). These results suggest that Ca, protein, and P intakes greater than RDA help to maintain proper BMD in middle-aged prementopausal women. Especially dietary Ca have important role in increasing the vertebral BMD and 800mg/d of Ca intake is optimum amount.

  • As paprika plants grew in a glass greenhouse from November 2022 to March 2023, the amount of light at each plant height, leaf temperature, transpiration rate, and water vapor pressure were measured. Accumulated leaf temperature was higher at the top of the plant than at the bottom. Over time, the leaf temperature measured around 11-13 AM changed from 26.55→23.21→22.80→26.67℃ in the lower part (pL), and from 26.52→24.48→24.55→27.78℃ in the upper part (pAs). And VPD changed from 1.45→0.94→0.74→1.46kPa in pL and from 1.11→0.86→0.71→1.28kPa in pAs. Accordingly, the transpiration rate changed from 4.25→0.17→4.08→0.52mmol·m-2·s-1 in pL, 7.61→2.45→1.94→4.39→0.52mmol·m-2·s-1 in pAs, and from pAs to pL. It was significantly higher than The difference between the lower and upper parts (pL-pAs) was higher in pAs than pL in leaf temperature, light intensity, and transpiration rate, but the water vapor pressure difference was higher in pL. In this way, paprika shows differences in the environment and photosynthetic factors between the upper and lower parts during the cultivation period, so it is judged that this needs to be taken into consideration in future research.

  • It is an important work to determine the mesh size of gill net for efficient catch. For investigating the suitable mesh size, the gill net for anchovy, Engraulis japonica was made and operated in the bay of Ulsan in July. 1983. The gill net for anchovy was composed of six different mesh size, 23.1mm (H=0.65), 21.6mm (H=0.65), 20.0mm (H=0.65), 23.1mm (H=0.55), 21.6mm (H=0.55) and 20.0mm(H=0.55). The parts of body caught by the gill net was examined, and the selectivity curves (for reference Ishida's method) with respect to the each mesh size were estimated using the data obtained through the operation of research gill net. The main results of this study are as follows: 1. The number of anchovy whose neck was in net was 148, more than $90\%$ of all, 161 2. The coefficient of relationship between the circumference of neck and the fork length were 0.70. 3. Fork length that the relative fishing efficiency of 23.1 mm mesh size (H=0.55) was maximum value was about 11.1 centimeter.
