We investigated the effects of piezoelectric field on the electro-absorption characteristics in InGaN/GaN multiple-quantum well (MQW) green light emitting diodes (LED). Double crystal X-ray diffraction measurement was performed to study the crystalline property and indium (In) composition in the MQW active layer. To measure the electro-luminescence and electro-reflectance (ER) spectroscopy, we fabricated the $1{\times}1\;mm^2$ large-area green LED chip. The piezoelectric field inside the LED structure was evaluated from the Vcomp in active layer by the ER spectra. Finally, we analyzed the electro-absorption characteristics of the green LED by using the photo-current spectroscopy.

The glass-ceramics containing bottom ash (B/A) which was a by-produced from an electrical power plant was fabricated and its crystalline phase, microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed. At first, the glass was fabricated by adding modifier oxide $Li_2O$ to lower the melting temperature of coal bottom ash. The glass obtained was heat-treated by using a 2-stage process to crystallize, that is to say, to increase the degree of crystallization in the glass-ceramics, the first heat treatment for nucleation was performed followed by the secondary one for the growth of nucleates. The main crystalline phase formed in the glass-ceramics was ${\beta}$-spodumene and the secondary phase was $L_2SiO_3$. It was recognized that the degree of crystallization of glass-ceramics was increased with a holding time of the secondary heat treatment stage. In the case of the specimens hold up to 3 hour, the crystallization was not completed and the microstructures and morphologies of crystalline phase were not uniform. In the specimens of holding time over 9 hours, the cracks were generated inside of it, so its compressive strength would decrease due them. In conclusion, it was able to obtain the optimum condition to fabriate the glass-ceramics having the properties of high crystallization degree, uniform microstructures and morphologies and the high mechanical strength.
Generally, peanuts are classified as high-fat foods as they possess high proportions of fatty acids. This study compared lipid constituents and properties between normal and high-oleic peanuts. Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) analyses revealed that the fatty acid levels were significantly different between the normal and higholeic peanuts (p<0.05). Eight fatty acids were identified in the samples, including palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0), oleic (C18:1, n9), linoleic (C18:2, n6), arachidic (C20:0), gondoic (C20:1, n9), behenic (C22:0), and lignoceric (C24:0) acids. Four tocopherol homologs were detected, and ${\alpha}$- and ${\gamma}$-tocopherols were the predominant ones. Tocopherols were rapidly decomposed during 25 day storage at $80^{\circ}C$. The main identified phytosterols were beta-sitosterol, ${\Delta}^5$-avenasterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol. Acid and peroxide values indicated that high-oleic peanuts have better oxidative stability than normal peanuts. These results can serve as the basis for the use of peanuts in the food industry.
We fabricated $YBa_2Cu_33O_{7-x}$(YBCO) films on(00l) $LaAlO_3$ substrates prepared by metal organic deposition(MOD) method using trifluoroacetate(TFA) solution and evaluated the effects of the humidity on the microstructure, phase purity, and critical properties. The films calcined at $430^{\circ}C$ were fired at $775^{\circ}C$ at 0%, 4.2%, 12.1%, and 20.0% humidified As gas mixed with 0.1% $O_2$. We observed that the amount of $BaF_2$ phase was effectively reduced and that a sharp and strong biaxial texture formed under a humidified atmosphere, leading to increased critical properties. For the films fired at 0% humidity, the $T_c\;and\;I_c$ were undetectably small. When the humidity was increased to 4.2%, the corresponding $T_c$(onset) and $I_c$ were increased to 90.5 K and 8 A/cm-width, respectively. For the films at the humidity range of 12.1-20.0%, the $I_c$ was found to be 35 A/cm-width. According to the results of the XRD, pole-figure, and SEM, these improved critical properties are probably attributed to the formation of a purer YBCO phase, larger grain size, and stronger c-axis orientation.
The studies for the derivatization of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) were performed mainly as acylation with HFBI (heptafluorobutyrylimidazole), alkylation with PBA (phenylboric acid) and silylation with BSTFA (N,O-bis[trimethylsilyl]trifluoroacetamide). Also silylation with MTBSTFA(N-methyl-N-[tert.-butyldimethylsilyl] trifluoroacetamide) and acylation with MBTFA (N-Methyl-bis[trifluoro-acetamide]) were also considered. Except the TBDMS derivative of 3-MCPD, all the derivatives were detected well. The derivatives of 3-MCPD with HFBI, PBA and BSTFA showed below 10 ${\mu}g/kg$ which was sensitive enough to satisfy Korea maximum residue limit 0.3 mg/kg. Among the tested adsorbents, Extrelut20 and Florisil were evaluated as the proper adsorbents to eliminate the soy sauce matrix for 3-MCPD. Ethyl acetate was the most efficient eluent with good recovery rate. The desired surrogate compound and internal standard were 1,2-butanediol and 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane, respectively. The limit of detection for PB-MCPD and TMS-MCPD were 10.16 and 7.06 ${\mu}g/kg$ on GC/MSD, respectively. HFB-MCPD derivative showed the lowest detection limits 2.98 and 5.32 ${\mu}g/kg$ by GC/ECD and GC/MSD, respectively.

Anatomical characteristics of volumetric composition, fiber length, vessel diameter, and crystalline properties of cellulose in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) planted in the reclaimed land of Buan-si, Korea were examined to understand the growth characteristics using a light microscopy and an X-ray diffraction method. The samples of kenaf were taken from six positions (3 cm, 35 cm, 70 cm, 105 cm, 280 cm, and 320 cm) of each stem over the growth period (July, August, September, and October) after seeding in the mid-May. In the kenaf stem, phloem constituted 10 to 15 %, xylem 66 to 82%, and pith 7 to 19%. The ray, bast fiber, and remainder comprised 50%, 20%, and 30% of the phloem, respectively. The volume of vessel, ray, and fiber in the xylem was approximately 10, 15, and 75%, respectively. The proportion of cell wall was 30.92% at the base of stem and 46.40% at the top of stem, respectively. The average length of bast fiber and xylem fiber was about 2.8 mm and 0.9 mm, respectively. Radial and tangential diameters of vessel increased with the increase of growth period, while they decreased with increasing the stem height. Relative crystallinity ranged from 70 to 79% in phloem and from 50 to 56% in xylem. Cellulose crystallite width was about 3 nm both in the phloem and xylem. Thus, the volumetric composition and cell dimensions in the phloem and xylem appeared to be varied with the growth period and the stem height.
Transparent vinyl-mulching cultivation plots heavy-fertilized (6-14-20 kg $10a^{-1}\; of\; N-P_2O_5-K_2O)$ in growing peanuts produced 315-344Kg $10a^{-1}$ of quality kernels through improvement of the low temperature conditions of underground environment during the early growing stage and kernel-filling stage. The yields of which were 82-99 percent higher than that of conventional cultivation plot. The vinyl-mulching cultivation techniques accelerated emergence, young seedling growth, flowering, pod bearing and kernel filling of peanuts in Korea.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) is a well known edible plant that is traditionally used to treat various illnesses related to inflammation and oxidative stress. Steam distillated ginger oil or water extract are mainly used for related products; however, it is unclear whether these fractions contain most of the bioactive compounds or the highest efficacy. This investigated the antioxidant effects of extracts prepared by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). 6-Gingerol was the most abundant component in hexane fraction of ethanol extract from ginger. The antioxidative properties of SFE oil and Marc ethanol fractions were demonstrated using the 2,20-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis 3-ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radicals scavenging assays. A clear correlation was observed between total polyphenol contents and $RC_{50}$ values in the Marc ethanol fraction. These results indicate that not only SFE oil but the marc after SFE could be good sources for the food industry.
Forty four patients with Bell's palsy were treated with acupuncture from onset and clinical observation was carried on from March 1994 through Feburary 1995. Acupuncture treatment was done 3 times per week and the acupuncture points were LI4 Hapkok, ST36 Choksamni, LI20 Yonghyang, BL2 Ch'anjuk, TE17 Yep'ung, ST4 Chich'ang, ST6 Hyopko, GV26 Sugu, CV24 Sungjang, GB14 Yangbaek and Ex-HN4 Oyo. They were inserted to a depth of 0.5 to 1.0 cm. After insertion, manipulation was carried on until the patients felt strong numbness or De Qi sensation induced by rotating or twisting needles. Through-needling in lengths varying from 2.0 to 3.5 cm was also applied from ST4 Chich'ang to ST6 Hyopko, from GV26 Sugu or CV24 Sungjang to ST4 Chich'ang and from GB14 Yangbaek to Ex-HN4 Oyo. The mean age was 39.3 and 63.6% of the patients were women, including one pregnant woman. There was no recurrent palsy in this study. By applying the House-Brackmann facial nerve grading scales, patients were evaluated weekly from the first treatment to judged recovery or the 7th week of the treatment. 86.4% of the patients were recovered completely within 7 weeks and the average healing period was 3.7 weeks.
Anemarrhena asphodeloides BUNGE is one of important medicinal crops, which has been collected or/and cultivated for its rhizomes. The main medicinal ingredient of the A. asphodeloides Bunge rhizomes is a saponin, which is known to have medical values for diaphoresis, sedatives and biuresis. However, studies on cultural methods and breeding works on this plant have not been made in detail. To increase productivity and to improve quality of crops, it is important to collect cultivated and wild lines, to classify them based on morphological and genetic characteristics, and to select superior pure lines at first. Therefore, total 20 A. asphodeloides lines collected were cultivated at the fieldof Chungnam Provincial Administration of Rural Development in 1995 to study the agronomic characteristics and to classify them based on morphological characteristics. Characteristics related with reproductive organ such as the number of spikes per plant and peduncle length showed greater variations than vegetative organrelated characteristics such as leaf length and rhizome length based on the coefficient of variation. Vigorous shoot growth resulted in better development of reproductive organs such as peduncle length and number of spikes per plant. However, the development of spikes was negatively correlated with chlorophyll content. Characteristics of underground parts were more significantly correlated with spike characteristics than aerial part characteristics. A. asphodeloides tested in this study were classified into 2 groups (group A and group B) based on centroid linkage cluster analysis. Group A showed more vigorous shoot growth with more leaves and spikes per plant, longer peduncle length, thicker peduncle diameter and higher shoot dry weight than group B. Group A could be further classified into 2 sub-groups based on leaf size, spike length and peduncle diameter, while group B also could be classified based on number of leaves, number of spikes and shoot dry weight.
