L2 Learners' Communication Strategies: A Data Convergence Analysis (제 2 언어 학습자의 의사소통 전략: 자료융합 분석)

  • L2 learners deal with communication problems encountered during the course of their oral communication by employing what are known as communication strategies(CSs). As CSs play a significant role in communication and language learning, identifying CSs that facilitate communication has become important in L2 research. However, there have been some controversies about how to identify CSs, especially about data sources: conversation data, retrospective interview data, or combining two types of data. Drawing on the advantages of converged data, this study aimed to identify CSs that L2 learners use in their English communication through a convergence analysis of data. In this qualitative case study, the data were collected from Korean L2 learners' conversations and retrospective verbal reports in stimulated recall interviews. Using a data convergence approach, various CSs were identified: definition replacement CSs, message change CSs, time-gaining CSs, and comprehension CSs. This study suggests the effectiveness of CSs in handling L2 communication problems and the usefulness of data convergence in L2 CS research.

Exploring the nature of communication anxiety in English among Korean EFL undergraduates (한국 대학생의 영어 의사소통 긴장감 연구)

  • Communication anxiety (CA) in L2 has been identified as one of the important predictors of determining success in the attainment of L2 communication competence. L2 professionals have attempted to explicate its nature in L2, but seemingly failed to achieve the goal. This is probably because they have tended to rely on studies dependent on the use of surveys, which are usually constructed on the basis of their own perspectives rather than L2 students' on CA. To solve this problem, some L2 professionals have utilized diverse research methods that can gather opinions directly from L2 students who are the main constituent in L2 learning; regretfully, they have barely listened to L2 students' voices about controlling CA in L2. This descriptive study explored the nature of CA and the way of controlling it by analyzing data from 57 Korean EFL undergraduates who voluntarily responded to the oral interview questions. The findings of this study pointed out that CA in L2 negatively influenced L2 performance. However, it seemed to have the potential to promote L2 learning. Provided are some important implications that can assist L2 teachers to help their students control CA by maximizing the positive nature of CA.

L3 Socialization of a Group of Mongolian Students Through the Use of a Written Communication Channel in Korea: A Case Study

  • This paper explored the academic socialization of a group of Mongolian college students, learning Korean as their L3 (Third Language), by focusing on their uses of an electronic communication channel. From a perspective of the continua of bi-literacy, this case study investigated how Mongolian students who had limited exposure to a Korean learning community overcame academic challenges through the use of a written communication channel as a tool in the socialization process. Data were collected mainly through three methods: written products, interviews, and questionnaires. The results from this study were as follows. Interactional opportunities for these minority students were seriously constrained during the classroom practices in a Korean-speaking classroom. They also described the lack of communicative competence in Korean and the limited roles played by L2 (English) communication as key barriers to classroom practices. However, students' ways of engaging in electronic interactions differed widely in that they were able to broaden interactional circles by communicating their expertise and difficulties with their Korean peers through the electronic channel. More importantly, the communication pattern of "L2-L2/L3-L3" (on a L2-L3 continuum) emerging from data demonstrated how these students used a written channel as a socialization tool to mediate their learning process in a new community of learning. This study argues that a written communication channel should be taken as an essential part of teaching practices especially for foreign students who cannot speak Korean fluently in multi-cultural classes.

Oral Presentations as an Alternative Approach to Enhance L2 Learning and Communication Skills (L2 학습과 의사소통 능력 향상을 위한 대안적 접근으로서의 구두 발표)

  • The current study aimed to examine university students' perceptions of the positive effects of L2 oral presentations in terms of communication skills and future employment. The participants were 13 undergraduate students enrolled in L2 oral presentation classes at the beginner or intermediate level. This study followed a qualitative research approach using in-depth and semi-structured interviews as the primary method. The findings revealed that students largely exhibited the benefits of oral presentations in three ways: by enhancing L2 proficiency, building confidence in public speaking, and gaining competitive advantages in their future careers. As a challenge for L2 learners, oral presentations were considered fundamental to develop effective communication skills in academic and professional contexts.

Intersubunit Communication of Escherichia coli Tryptophan Synthase (대장균 트립토판 생성효소의 소단위체간 상호조절)

  • Escherichia coli tryptophan synthase (TS) contains ${\alpha}_2{\beta}_2$, which catalyzes the final two steps in Trp biosynthesis. A molecular tunnel exists between the two active sites of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ subunits in TS. Via intersubunit communication, TS increases catalytic efficiency, including substrate channeling. The ${\beta}$ subunit of TS is composed of two domains, one of which, the COMM (communication) domain, plays an important role in intersubunit communication. The ${\alpha}$ subunit has a TIM barrel structure. This protein has functional regions at the C terminal of ${\beta}$ pleated sheets and in its loop regions. Three regions of the ${\alpha}$ subunit (${\alpha}L6$ [${\alpha}-loop$ L6], ${\alpha}L2$, and ${\alpha}L3$) are implicated in intersubunit communication. In the present study, conformational changes in ${\alpha}L6$ were monitored by measuring the sensitivity of mutant proteins in these regions to trypsin. The addition of a ${\alpha}$ subunit-specific ligand, D,L-${\alpha}$-glycerophosphate (GP), partially restored the sensitivity of mutant proteins to trypsin. In contrast, the addition of the ${\beta}$ subunit-specific ligand L-serine (Ser) resulted in varied sensitivity to trypsin, with an increase in PT53 (substitution of Pro with Thr at residue 53) and DG56, decrease in NS104 and wild type, and no change in GD51 and PH53. This finding may be related to several reaction intermediates formed under this condition. The addition of both GP and Ser led to a highly stable state of the complex. The present results are consistent with the current model. The method used herein may be useful for screening residues involved in intersubunit communication.

Design of the RF Front-end for L1/L2 Dual-Band GPS Receiver (L1/L2 이중-밴드 GPS 수신기용 RF 전단부 설계)

  • The RF front-end for L1/L2 dual-band Global Positioning System(GPS) receiver is presented in this paper. The RF front-end(down-converter) using low IF architecture consists of a wideband low noise amplifier(LNA), a current mode logic(CML) frequency divider and a I/Q down-conversion mixer with a poly-phase filter for image rejection. The current bleeding technique is used in the LNA and mixer to obtain the high gain and solve the head-room problem. The common drain feedback is adopted for low noise amplifier to achieve the wideband input matching without inductors. The fabricated RF front-end using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process shows a gain of 38 dB for L1 and 41 dB for L2 band. The measured IIP3 is -29 dBm in L1 band and -33 dBm in L2 band, The input return loss is less than -10 dB from 50 MHz to 3 GHz. The measured noise figure(NF) is 3.81 dB for L1 band and 3.71 dB for L2 band. The image rejection ratio is 36.5 dB. The chip size of RF front end is $1.2{\times}1.35mm^2$.

  • In order to enhance standardization and interoperability of local level systems, AHU control network was designed with basement(8 point) and basis story(15 point) and then the network was constructed by power line communication. Each devices of AHU system were programed with neuron C of $L_{ON}W_{ORKS}$ as an open protocol. As a result of a study, each devices of the network were controlled with self dispersion process by $L_{ON}W_{ORKS}$ protocol and wiring could be reduced by power line communication.

  • The first purpose of this paper is to design brand logo sign analysis frame, 'SCoL'(Analysis frame of signification and communication for the brand logo). It has semiotic view and communication function. And the second is to prove propriety of the suggested frame by application to social media brand logos. The SCoL frame is based on 4 features of logo sigh to have analytic consistency. Also, it covers whole semiological process with index, icon, symbol as signification understanding and reach communication step with Jakobson's theory. As the results, the findings are follow; The SCoL frame can be useful to get comprehensive semiotic understandings and communication functions about logo signs. The social media brands build their own meaning area with logo signs and they depend on different communication function.

Stereoscopic Floating Image System Using Stereoscopic Display and Two Lenses

  • The proposed technique uses a combination of two systems, viz. a three dimensional stereoscopic system and a two-lens system. This novel combined system successfully produces a stereoscopic floating image in mid air near the observer. The two-lens system produces a floating image from the stereoscopic image originating from the stereoscopic system, and the two lenses eliminate the defects of the floating lens and concave mirror. The experimental results show that the two lenses eliminate the defects of the lens and the concave mirror, so that the proposed system successfully produces a touchable stereoscopic floating image.

  • 유비쿼터스 센서네트워크는 다양한 환경에서 여러 가지 요구사항에 부합하기 위해 미들웨어 모델들을 필요로 하게 되었다. 지금까지 제안된 미들웨어 구조들은 특정 응용에 초점을 맞추거나 여러 가지 요구사항들을 수용하기에 적절치 않은 구조를 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 유비쿼터스 센서네트워크 환경에서 L4 마이크로커널 기반으로 미들웨어 시스템을 구성하는 것을 제안한다. L4 마이크로커널은 대표적인 2세대 마이크로 커널로써, 기존의 모놀리틱 커널의 구조적 문제점을 극복하기 위한 대안이 될 수 있다. 기존의 모놀리틱 커널은 임베디드시스템, 실시간 시스템과 같은 특수한 목적을 수행하는 시스템을 설계하는데 많은 제약사항을 가지고 있다. 유비쿼터스 센서네트워크 환경에서 L4 마이크로커널을 통한 시스템 구성은 전체 시스템의 안정성과 독립성을 보장하며, 특정 상황에 맞게 새로운 솔루션을 추가할 수 있는 유연성을 제공한다.
