Most nutrients taken by pregnant women are secreted into their breast milk. Food contains choline together with betaine, and in human body choline is oxidized to betaine which transfer methyl group. The aim of the study was to estimate the concentrations of choline and betaine in breast milk of Korean lactating women and the choline and betaine intakes of their infants. Total choline, free choline and betaine concentrations in breast milk of some lactating women living in Daejon Metropolitan city were analyzed every month by using HPLC-MS and enzymatic method during the first five months. Total choline concentrations of breast milks were 157.64 mg/L (1.52 mmol/L), 157.83 mg/L (1.52 mmol/L), 165.99 mg/L (1.60 mmol/L), 153.67 mg/L (1.48 mmol/L), 145.05 mg/L (1.39 mmol/L) by month after delivery for five months. The concentrations of total choline and free choline in breast milks were not significantly changed for the five months while the betaine concentrations gradually decreased. Daily intake of total choline of the infants appears to be adequate for the infant's requirement according to the US DRI; 124.6 mg/d, 120.9 mg/d, 126.5 mg/d 104.1 mg/d from 2nd to 5th month after birth. Free choline and betaine intakes of the infants were not significantly changed during the four months except showing decrease in betaine intake per kg body weight. Choline intakes of the infants more correlated with choline concentrations of the breast milks (r = 0.982, p = 0.000) than intake amount of the breast milk (r = 0.414, p = 0.028). These results suggest that the choline intake of Korean breast-fed infants appears to be adequate and the intake could be affected by the choline concentration of the breast milk.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find out the relation between the height of intercrestal line, and HIVD(Herniated Intervertebral Disc)of Lumbar spine. Methods : We investigated 445 cases (208 male, 237 female) of patients who were diagnosed as HIVD of L-spine at either L4/5 or L5/S1 level. We analysed the relation between the height of intercrestal line and the level of HIVD. Results : 1. Among 445 cases, the level of intercrestal line with HIVD of L-spine at the specific location was different between male and female. In male, the intercrestal line is more likely to be located at L4 level, while in female more likely to be located at L5 level. 2. Among 445 cases, L5/S1 HIVD patients(272, 61.1%) were more than L4/5 HIVD patients(173, 38.9%). At L4 body area, L4/5 HIVD patients were more than L5/S1 HIVD patients, however, at L4/5 intervertebral area and L5 body area, L5/S1 HIVD patients were more than L4/5 HIVD patients. (p<0.01) 3. When the line is located at higher level, HIVD of L-spine tends to be occurred at L4/5 level. Contrastly, when the line is located at lower level, HIVD of L-spine tends to be occurred at L5/S1 level. (p<0.01) Conclusions : High intercrestal line leads to L4/5 HIVD, while low intercrestal line leads to L5/S1 HIVD. Possibly, it is caused by different length and thickness of the iliolumbar ligament.
Four treatments were conducted to determine the effects of lighting regimes on the body weight gain and feed conversion of broiler chicks during 7 weeks: 1) 24 hours consistant lighting regime, 2) intermittent lighting regime of 1 hour lighting and 3 hours dark, 3) 20 hours lighting and 4 hours dark regime, 4) natural lighting regime. Each treatment was composed of three replications and 180 broiler male chicks were used in this experiment (45 chicks for each treatment,15 chicks for each replication). The results of this experiment were summarized as follows; 1. The body weight gains of 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark regime were heavier than those of any other treatments during whole period, but no significant differences were found. In 1-4 weeks, the body weight gains of 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark regime and 20 hours lighting+4 hours dark regime were much heavier than those of natural lighting regime and 24 hours consistant lighting regime, but in 5-7 weeks, no differences were found among the 4 treatments. 2. The feed conversions of 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark regime were improved more than those of any other treatments during whole period, but no significant differences were found. In 1-4 weeks, the feed conversions of 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark regime and 20 hours lighting+4 hours dark regime were much more improved than those of natural lighting regime and 24 hours consistant lightine regime, but in 5-7 weeks, no differences were found among the 4 treatments. 3. These results indicated that the intermittent lighting regimes such as 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark and 20 hours lighting+4 hours dark are more efficient on the body weight gain and feed conversion of broiler chicks than natural lighting regime and 24 hours consistant lighting regime.
The explants of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia Poeppig & Endlicher) were cultured to invest th8e dedifferentiation condition, and formative callus from leaf was cultured to find the regeneration and micro-crown bud formation. Basal MS medium was more effective to form callus than 1/2 MS and B$_{5}$ medium. Calli formations from leaf, petiole and lateral bud were more effective on MS medium supplemented with 1.0, 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.2, 0.4 mg/L kinetin or BA than 1.0, 2.0 mg/L NAA and 0.2, 0.4 mg/L kinetin or BA. Formative callus from leaf was proliferated about 70% on medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L BA. When callus was proliferated, 63% regeneration rate was shown on medium supplemented with 1.0, 2.0 mg/L BA in case of subculture for 3~4 months but was not shown on medium supplemented with 1.0, 2.0 mg/L kinetin. Micro-crown bud formed as addition of BA at 3~4 months after callus culture and then was obtained many at 5~6 months, it was most formed about 82% on medium supplemented with 5 mg/L BA. Rate of micro-crown bud formation was increased as more over 5 mg/L BA concentration, when this time, however, shoot had thick leaves and short internodes, and then withered before long, Micro-crown bud was formed about 88.0% on medium supplemented with 5% sucrose, that was more increased 28% than with 3% sucrose. The buds of crown bud between harvested in field and formed in vitro were difference only in size, but both were similar in shape according to histological view.
The effect of biotin and biotin vitamer on the fermentative production of L-glutamic acid (L-GA) by Brevibacterium flavum was studied. And results were as follows. 1) L-GA production in the medium containing 10% Glucose was the best at the concentration of Biotin 5${\gamma}$/l, Desthiobiotin 5${\gamma}$/1, and 7,8-Diaminopelargonic acid 10${\gamma}$/1, respectively. 2) In the experiment using the Glucose-Acetate mixed media derided into four parts, considerable amounts of cell growth and L-GA production were observed in the mixed medium containing 2% Glucose-Acetate. 3) In the cases of using the media containing methanol, ethanol, ethylacetate, acetic acid (free acetate), Na-acetate:NH$_4$-acetate=2 : 1, the production of L-GA were in decreasing order as follows; Na-Acetate:NH-Acetate=2 : 1> Acetic acid (free acetate)> Ethylacetate> Ethanol> Methanol. 4) When biotin vitamers as growth factors were added in the medium containing Glucose or Acetate as the source of carbon, the substitution effect of Desthiobiotin was almost the same, 7,8-Diaminopelargonic acid 3 or 4 times stronger, and Bisnorbiotin has no substitution effect, compared with Biotin.
To investigate the effects of disulphide bond position on the salt resistance and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-neutralizing activity of ${\alpha}$-helical homo-dimeric antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), we synthesized an ${\alpha}$-helical model peptide ($K_6L_4W_1$) and its homo-dimeric peptides (di-$K_6L_4W_1$-N, di-$K_6L_4W_1$-M, and di-$K_6L_4W_1$-C) with a disulphide bond at the N-terminus, the central position, and the C-terminus of the molecules, respectively. Unlike $K_6L_4W_1$ and di-$K_6L_4W_1$-M, the antimicrobial activity of di-$K_6L_4W_1$-N and di-$K_6L_4W_1$-C was unaffected by 150 mM NaCl. Both di-$K_6L_4W_1$-N and di-$K_6L_4W_1$-C caused much greater inhibitory effects on nitric oxide (NO) release in LPS-induced mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells, compared to di-$K_6L_4W_1$-M. Taken together, our results indicate that the presence of a disulphide bond at the N- or C-terminus of the molecule, rather than at the central position, is more effective when designing salt-resistant ${\alpha}$-helical homo-dimeric AMPs with potent antimicrobial and LPS-neutralizing activities.
The continuous production of L -proline was studied using L-histidine auxotrophic mutant of Corynebacterium acetoacidophilum under various substrate limited conditions. Among the $NH_4\;^+$$PO_4\;^3$ and L -histidine limited conditions, the highest production of L -proline was observed under the L-histidine limited condition. Under $NH_4\;^+$ and $PO_4\;^3$ limited conditions, no or poor L-proline production was observed, respectively. For the kinetic parameters under L -histidine limitation the specific rate of L -proline production was increased with dilution rate upto $0.1hr^{-1}$ but decreased above $0.1hr^{-1}$. The volumetric rate of L -proline production was showed similar pattern with specific rate. The dried cell weight was gradually increased according to decrease the dilution rate. Specific rate of glucose consumption was proportionally increased with dilution rate. The results of continuous culture (higher production of L-proline at dilution rate $0.1hr^{-1}$) will be used in fed-batch culture for the control of cell growth rate and mass production of L-proline.

In this paper, we present novel dual-band microstrip antennas using inverted-L-shaped parasitic elements vertically at radiation apertures for GPS L1(1.575 GHz) and L2(1.227 GHz) bands. For making dual band which has large interval, the inverted-L-shaped parasitic element was loaded at the radiation aperture of a half-wavelength patch antenna(GPS L1) in opposite direction of the feeding point for receiving the low frequency(GPS L2). The low frequency occurs by perturbation and coupling between the patch and parasitic. Next, due to use circular polarizations at the GPS applications, two inverted-L-shaped parasitic elements were loaded at radiation apertures of each polarizations and the feeding point was moved at diagonal part of the patch. The dimensions of the designed circularly polarized antenna were $88.5{\times}79{\times}10.4mm^3$ ($0.36{\lambda}L{\times}0.32{\lambda}L{\times}0.04{\lambda}L$, ${\lambda}L$ is the free-space wavelength at 1.227 GHz). Measured -10 dB bandwidths were 116.3 MHz(7.4%) and 64.3 MHz(5.2%) at GPS L1 and L2 bands, respectively. All of these cover the respective required system bandwidths. The measured 3 dB axial ratio bandwidths were 11.7 MHz(0.74%) and 14 MHz(1.14%), respectively. Within each of the designed bands, broadside radiation patterns were observed.
The complex[Cu(L)](ClO4)2 (1) (L:3,5,10,12-Tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n with cell parameters a=8.208(2)Å, b=13.339(6) Å, c=10.752(5) Å, β=111.02(4)˚ Z=2. Least-squares refinement of 1 led to a R(RW)factor of 0.073 (0.142) for 617 observed reflections of F0>40(F0). The crystal structure of 1 has a square-planar geometry and adopts the trans-III conformation.
To establish the mass propagation system of Lavandula spica cv. Marino, shoot tip, node, internode and leaf segment cultures were carried out. RAPD was applied to detect the somaclonal variation. Callus induction was very high in the medium supplemented with 1 mg/l 2.4-D, 2 mg/l NAA. especially and combined with 0.05 mg/l BAP from leaves. Shoot formation was high with $2{\sim}4\;mg/l$ BAP or 4 mg/l BAP + 0.2 mg/l NAA from shoot tip. Shoot proliferation was 9.1 times in the $B_{5}$ medium with 0.5 mg/l BAP and 0.01 mg/l NAA. Root formation was improved in NAA, which was the concentration of 0.1 to 1 mg/l and 1 mg/l IAA. Nursery survival rate was enhanced over 90% and growth was looked good in the acclimation soil consisting of peatmoss : vermiculite : perlite (1:1:1, v:v:v). Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA banding patterns based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to assess the genetic variation in plants regenerated from in vitro culture.
