제주말의 요추골유합 1례 (A case of fused lumbar vertebrae in Cheju native horse)

  • The fused lumbar vertebrae (L) of the female Cheju native horse were observed macroscopically. The 5th L and 6th L were partially fused. They were composed of four parts between the spinous process of the 5th L and 6th L, left and right transverse process of the 5th L and 6th L, caudal articular process of the 5th L and cranial articular process of the 6th L, and fossa of vertebra of the 5th L and head of vertebra of the 6th L. The dorsal lumbar foramen and ventral lumbar foramen were formed each at left and right of medial parts in the fused transverse processes of the 5th and 6th lumbar vertebrae.

1-MCP처리가 '후지'사과의 저장성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of 1-Methylcyclopropene on Storage Life and Fruit Qualities of 'Fuji' Apple Fruit)

  • This study was divided to three experiments for evaluating the effects of pre- or post-load 1-MCP on quality of 'Fuji' apples exposed to ethylene. The first experiment was compared for fruit quality at room temperature at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days between the control and 1-MCP-treated fruits followed storage of 130, 150, and 170 days. 1-MCP-treated fruits maintained higher fruit titratable acidity and firmness than those of control fruits. The second experiment was compared for fruit quality at room temperature at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days between fruits applied with pre-loaded-1-MCP on ethylene treatments (10 ${\mu}L/L$, 20 ${\mu}L/L$, and 40 ${\mu}L/L$) and control fruits. 1-MCP-treated fruits were not affected by ethylene concentrations, and had higher fruit weight and firmness than those of control. The third experiment was compared for fruit quality at room temperature at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days between fruits applied with pre-loading with ethylene (10 ${\mu}L/L$) followed by ventilation (8 h, or 32 h, or 56 h) and 1.0 ${\mu}L/L$ 1-MCP treatment. As observed above experiments, 1-MCP-treated fruits had higher fruit weight and firmness than those of control fruits, regardless of the delayed applications of 1-MCP.

오차산감방이 3T3-L1 adipocyte의 leptin 및 leptin receptor 함량과 differentiation에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Oryungsan-gagampang on Leptin Levels, Leptin Receptor Levels and Differentiation of 3T3-L1 Adipocyte)

  • Objectives: This experimental study was designed to investig:ue the effects of Oryungsan-gagampang on leptin and leptin receptor levels and differentiation of 3T3-L1 adipocyte. Methods: After 3T3-L1 adipocytes were incubated with various concentrations of Oryungsan-gagampang and Reductil(r) for 7 days, leptin and leptin receptor levels in 3T3-Ll adipocytes were measured by ELISA. To elucidate the mechanism of inhibitory effects of Oryungsan-gagampang on obesity, the 3T3-L1 adipocytes after oil red 0 staining were taken by digital photo system. Results: 1. Oryungsan-gagampang $1,000{\mu}g/ml$ significantly increased leptin levels in 3T3-L1 adipocytes in comparison with the control group (p<0.05), and Oryungsan-gagampang 0.1 10, $1,000{\mu}g/ml$ significantly increased leptin receptor levels in 3T3-L1 adipocytes in comparison with the control group (p<0.05). 2. Oryungsan-gagampang inhibited of differentiation of 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Conclusions: Oryungsan-gagampang showed significant effects on inhibiting differentiation of 3T3-Ll adipocytes, and increasing leptin levels and leptin receptor levels in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Therefore, Oryungsan-gagampang could be used to treat obesity, but further studies are required.

Wake-up Treatments for Improving Oviposition and Colony Development of the Bumblebees Bombus ignitus and B. terrestris

  • Bumblebees are widely used to pollinate crops in greenhouses and fields. Here, we investigated whether different wake-up treatments during a short period of 1~3 days just before indoor rearing has any effects on oviposition and colony development of $CO_2$-treated Bombus ignitus queens and artificially hibernated B. terrestris queens The wake-up regimes were defined as 16L for 1 day (16L-1), 16 L per day for 3 days (16L-3), 24L for 1 day (24L-1), or 24D for 1 day (24D-1). Among these wake-up treatments, the oviposition rate and preoviposition period of B. ignitus queens reared at 24L-1 were 16.7~25.1% higher and 1.0~3.5 days shorter than other wake-up treatments. B. terrestris queens reared at 24L-1 also showed the best results for egg-laying characteristics, which were 8.9~18.8% higher for oviposition and 0.6~3.5 days shorter for preovipostion period than other wake-up treatments. Furthermore, B. terrestris queens reared at 24L-1 were 17.5% and 13.8% higher in rate of colony foundation and queen production, respectively, than other wake-up treatments. These results show that the most favorable wake-up treatment just before rearing for egg-laying and colony developmental characteristics of B. ignitus and B. terrestris queens was 24L-1. Overall, our findings indicate that a wake-up treatment just before rearing was effective for colony initiation and colony development of bumblebee queens.

MS 배지내 무기물 농도, 당 농도 및 광 조건이 무스카리의 기내 자구 형성과 비대에 미치는 영향 (Effect of MS Medium Strength, Sucrose Concentration, and Light Condition on Bulblet Formation and Growth of Muscari armenicum In Vitro)

  • 본 연구는 우리나라 무스카리 우점품종인 'Early Giant'의 대량증식 체계를 구축하기 위하여 잎 절편으로부터 소인경 형성과 비대에 미치는 MS 무기염 농도, 당 농도 및 광조건의 영향을 조사하였다. 무스카리의 잎 절편을 2주간 암 배양 후 MS 기본배지에 NAA $0.01mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, kinetin $0.2m{\cdot}L^{-1}$, 자당 $30g{\cdot}L^{-1}$와 gelrite $3g{\cdot}L^{-1}$가 첨가된 배지에 16시간 일장으로 명 배양하였을 때 자구형성 및 생육이 가장 양호하였다. 다만, 자구 비대는 MS 배지 내 $60g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 당 농도에서 촉진되었다. 온실에서 순화된 식물체는 정상적으로 개화하였으며 정식 2년차에 1.5개 내외의 자구를 가진 구를 생산할 수 있었다.

소독제 농도, pH, 온도, 암모니아 농도, 부유물질이 강우 월류수 염소 소독에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Disinfectant Concentration, pH, Temperature, Ammonia, and Suspended Solids on the Chlorine Disinfection of Combined Sewer Overflow)

  • 하수처리시설 초과유량에 대한 처리 규제 입법 예고로 인해 강우 월류수 처리에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 강우 월류수 염소(차아염소산나트륨) 소독 시 소독제 농도(0.11-4.0 mg $Cl_2/L$), pH (6.5-8.0), 온도($15-25^{\circ}C$), 암모니아 농도(10-41 mg N/L), 부유물질(91-271 mg SS/L)이 대장균군수 감소 속도에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다. 차아염소산나트륨 농도 효과는 반속도 상수가 1.212mg $Cl_2/L$인 saturation-type model로 잘 모사되었다. 소독 반응 속도는 SS와 pH 증가에 따라 감소되는 반면, 온도에 따라서는 증가하였고, 암모니아 농도에는 영향을 받지 않았다. 월류수 유입 조건을 $1{\times}10^5MPN/mL$, 271 mg SS/L, $15^{\circ}C$, pH 8.0로 가정할 때, 염소 주입 농도 1 mg/L, 수리학적 체류시간 1.25 분인 염소 소독조를 통해 입법예고 된 수질 기준의 1/3 수준인 대장균군수 1,000개/mL를 달성할 수 있을 것으로 계산되어, 염소 소독이 강우 월류수 소독에 유효하게 사용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

건강성인의 혈구 참고치 산정 (Hematological Reference Values in the Healthy Adults)

  • 1) 건강한 성인 2823명을 대상으로 자동혈구 계산기인 Coulter Counter Model S plus II를 이용하여 본원의 참고치를 설정하였다. 산출된 참고치는 기기의 설명서에 제시되어 임상 의사들이 사용하고 있는 참고치와 차이가 있었다. 2) 국내의 보고들과 비교해 볼 때 본원의 참고치와 대체로 비등하였고 기기의 설명서에 제시된 참고치와는 차이가 있으므로 본원의 참고치률 설정하여 사용하여야 하겠다. 3) 결과는 다음과 같다. (1) 백혈구 수는 남자 $6.800{\pm}2.680(2SD)/{\mu}l$, 여자 $5.950{\pm}2.380(2SD)/{\mu}l$ 이었다. (2) 적혈구 수는 남자 $428{\pm}60(2SD){\times}10^4/{\mu}l$, 여자 $415{\pm}56(2SD){\times}10^4/{\mu}l$ 이었다. (3) 혈색소량은 남자 $15.4{\pm}1.8(2SD)g/dL$, 여자 $13.0{\pm}1.6(2SD)g/dL$ 이었다. (4) 적혈구 용적은 남자 $45.3{\pm}5.0(2SD)%$, 여자 $38.2{\pm}4.6(2SD)%$ 이었다. (5) 평균 적혈구 용적은 남자 $93.8{\pm}5.8(2SD)fL$, 여자 $92.2{\pm}7.4(2SD)fL$ 이었다. (6) 평균 적혈구 혈색소량은 남자 $31.8{\pm}2.2(2SD)pg$, 여자 $31.4;{\pm}2.8(2SD)pg$ 이었다. (7) 평균 적혈구 혈색소농도는 남자 $34.0{\pm}1.2(2SD)%$, 여자 $33.9{\pm}1.2(2SD)%$ 이었다. (8) 적혈구 분포 폭은 남자 $12.7{\pm}1.0(2SD)%$, 여자 $12.6{\pm}1.4(2SD)%$ 이었다. (9) 혈소판 수는 남자 $242.9{\pm}87.8(2SD){\times}10^4/{\mu}l$, 여자 $242.2{\pm}89.0(2SD){\times}10^4/{\mu}l$ 이었다. (10) 혈소판 용적은 남자 $0.201{\pm}0.076(2SD)%$, 여자 $0.204{\pm}0.076(2SD)%$ 이었다. (11) 평균 혈소판 용적은 남자 $8.20{\pm}1.70(2SD)fL$, 여자 $8.36{\pm}1.82(2SD)fL$ 이었다. (12) 혈소판 분포 폭은 남자 $16.1{\pm}0.8(2SD)%$, 여자 $16.0{\pm}0.8(2SD)%$ 이었다.

The Role and Regulation of MCL-1 Proteins in Apoptosis Pathway

  • Phylogenetically conserved Bcl-2 family proteins play a pivotal role in the regulation of apoptosis from virus to human. Members of the Bcl-2 family consist of antiapoptotic proteins such as Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, and Bcl-w, and proapoptotic proteins such as BAD, Bax, BOD, and Bok. It has been proposed that anti- and proapoptotic Bcl-2 proteins regulate cell death by binding to each other and forming heterodimers. A delicate balance between anti- and proapoptotic Bcl-2 family members exists in each cell and the relative concentration of these two groups of proteins determines whether the cell survives or undergoes apoptosis. Mcl-1 (Myeloid cell :leukemia-1) is a member of the Bcl-2 family proteins and was originally cloned as a differentiation-induced early gene that was activated in the human myeloblastic leukemia cell line, ML-1 . Mcl-1 is expressed in a wide variety of tissues and cells including neoplastic ones. We recently identified a short splicing variant of Mcl-1 short (Mcl-IS) and designated the known Mcl-1 as Mcl-1 long (Mcl-lL). Mcl-lL protein exhibits antiapoptotic activity and possesses the BH (Bcl-2 homology) 1, BH2, BH3, and transmembrane (TM) domains found in related Bcl-2 proteins. In contrast, Mcl-1 S is a BH3 domain-only proapoptotic protein that heterodimerizes with Mcl-lL. Although both Mc1-lL and Mcl-lS proteins contain BH domains fecund in other Bcl-2 family proteins, they are distinguished by their unusually long N-terminal sequences containing PEST (proline, glutamic acid, serine, and threonine) motifs, four pairs of arginine residues, and alanine- and glycine-rich regions. In addition, the expression pattern of Mcl-1 protein is different from that of Bcl-2 suggesting a unique role (or Mcl-1 in apoptosis regulation. Tankyrasel (TRF1-interacting, ankyrin-related ADP-related polymerasel) was originally isolated based on its binding to TRF 1 (telomeric repeat binding factor-1) and contains the sterile alpha motif (SAM) module, 24 ankyrin (ANK) repeats, and the catalytic domain of poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Previous studies showed that tankyrasel promotes telomere elongation in human cells presumably by inhibiting TRFI though its poly(ADP-ribosyl)action by tankyrasel . In addition, tankyrasel poly(ADP-ribosyl)ates Insulin-responsive amino peptidase (IRAP), a resident protein of GLUT4 vesicles, and insulin stimulates the PARP activity of tankyrase1 through its phosphorylation by mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). ADP-ribosylation is a posttranslational modification that usually results in a loss of protein activity presumably by enhancing protein turnover. However, little information is available regarding the physiological function(s) of tankyrase1 other than as a PARP enzyme. In the present study, we found tankyrasel as a specific-binding protein of Mcl-1 Overexpression of tankyrasel led to the inhibition of both the apoptotic activity of Mel-lS and the survival action of Mcl-lL in mammalian cells. Unlike other known tankyrasel-interacting proteins, tankyrasel did not poly(ADP-ribosyl)ate either of the Mcl-1 proteins despite its ability to decrease Mcl-1 proteins expression following coexpression. Therefore, this study provides a novel mechanism to regulate Mcl-1-modulated apoptosis in which tankyrasel downregulates the expression of Mcl-1 proteins without the involvement of its ADP-ribosylation activity.

Workload Characteristics-based L1 Data Cache Switching-off Mechanism for GPUs

  • Modern graphics processing units (GPUs) have become one of the most attractive platforms in exploiting high thread level parallelism with the support of new programming tools such as CUDA and OpenCL. Recent GPUs has applied cache hierarchy to support irregular memory access patterns; however, L1 data cache (L1D) exhibits poor efficiency in the GPU. This paper shows that the L1D does not always positively affect the applications in terms of performance and energy efficiency for the GPU. The performance of the GPU is even harmed by using the L1D for lots of applications. Our proposed technique exploits the characteristics of the currently-executed applications to predict the performance impact of the L1D on the GPU and then decides whether to continuously use the cache for the application or not. Our experimental results show that the proposed technique improves the GPU performance by 9.4% and saves up to 52.1% of the power consumption in the L1D.
