  • A Q-band pHEMT image-rejection low-noise amplifier (IR-LNA) is presented using inter-stage tunable resonators. The inter-stage L-C resonators can maximize an image rejection by functioning as inter-stage matching circuits at an operating frequency ($F_{OP}$) and short circuits at an image frequency ($F_{IM}$). In addition, it also brings more wideband image rejection than conventional notch filters. Moreover, tunable varactors in L-C resonators not only compensate for the mismatch of an image frequency induced by the process variation or model error but can also change the image frequency according to a required RF frequency. The implemented pHEMT IR-LNA shows 54.3 dB maximum image rejection ratio (IRR). By changing the varactor bias, the image frequency shifts from 27 GHz to 37 GHz with over 40 dB IRR, a 19.1 dB to 17.6 dB peak gain, and 3.2 dB to 4.3 dB noise figure. To the best of the authors' knowledge, it shows the highest IRR and $F_{IM}/F_{OP}$ of the reported millimeter/quasi-millimeter wave IR-LNAs.

  • In this paper, various spiral zeroth-order resonators are proposed for wireless power transmission. Since a zerothorder resonance(ZOR) mode of meta-material transmission lines has the characteristic of an infinite wavelength, its frequency is independent of physical length. Also, to obtain high transmission efficiencies high-Q resonators and strong coupling coefficient between coupled resonators are required. Therefore, the resonators consist of spiral inductor and lumped capacitor to use the ZOR mode and they are optimized via parametric study and circuit analysis for a high-Q resonator design. The optimized resonators are simulated and compared with a conventional spiral resonator and one of them was fabricated and measured. The fabricated one has a dimension of $20cm{\times}20cm{\times}8cm$($0.009{\lambda}_0{\times}0.009_{\lambda}_0{\times}0.004{\lambda}_0$) and the transmission efficiency of 80 % is measured at 13.56 MHz at transmitted distance of 40 cm.

  • A novel RF tunable bandpass filter structure using dielectric resonators and varactor diodes is considered for the optimization to achieve constant bandwidth with minimum passband insertion loss. The coupling between resonators is realized by coupling windows and series lumped L, C elements are used to realize the input/output stage couplings. A 5 poles, 0.01 dB ripple Chebyshev type filter tuned from 800 MHz~900 MHz is designed and presented in this paper. The passband bandwidth for the design is 10 MHz (fractional bandwidth = 1.2 %). Experimental results show that the 3 dB passband bandwidth variation is 12.04 MHz~12.16 MHz (less than 1 %) and passband insertion loss is 15 dB~7 dB depending on the tuning voltages.

  • We have designed photonic crystal based bandpass filters whose characteristics are suitable for WDM communication system. The filters consist of coupled point defect resonators in two-dimensional photonic crystal. The frequency response of coupled resonators has been analyzed by the coupling of modes in time, from which the design parameters for the coupled resonator filters have been extracted. For the appropriate choice of the design parameters, each resonator is treated as a lumped L-C resonance circuit, and from the analogy between the equivalent circuit and the standard L-C filter circuits, the design parameters are simply determined from the table for general filter circuit design. Based on the determined design parameters, a photonic crystal based filter has been designed and its performance has been calculated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The designed filter shows a pass band of 50GHz and 0.5 dB in-band ripple, which is suitable for typical WDM communication systems with 100GHz channel spacing.

  • The $high-T_c$ Superconducting(HTS) antenna which consists of "H" type resonator has the benefits for the miniaturization of antenna in comparison with the microstrip antenna of the similar dimension. To fabricate the "H" type antenna HTS $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(YBCO) thin films were deposited on MgO substrates using rf-magnetron sputtering. Standard etching processes were performed for the patterning of the "H" type antenna. For comparison between normal conducting antennas and superconducting antennas, the gold antennas with the same dimension were also fabricated. An aperture coupling was used for impedance matching between $50\Omega$ feed line and HTS radiating patch. The diverse experimental results were reported in terms of the resonant frequency, the return loss and the characteristics impedance. The "H" type superconducting antenna showed the performance of 1.36 in SWR, 24 % in efficiency, and 14.6 dB in the return loss superior to the normal conducting counterpart.

  • $Ba(Mg,Ta)O_3-Ba(Co,Nb)O_3$ ceramics were prepared by the conventional mixed oxide method. The ceramics were sintered at the temperature of 1500-$1575^{\circ}C$ for 5[hr.] in air. The crystal structure was investigated by the XRD. The microstructure of the ceramics were observed by SEM. The microwave properties of dielectric resonators were investigated as a function of composition and sintering temperature. $Ba(Mg,Ta)O_3-Ba(Co,Nb)O_3$ ceramics have a structure of complex perovskite type, and have peaks of (101),(102),(201),(202) and (212). In the case of the $0.7Ba(Mg,Ta)O_3-0.3Ba(Co,Nb)O_3$ ceramic resonator, dielectric constant, quality factor and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(TCRF, ${\tau}_l$) were a good value of 26.5, 11.500 at 10[GHz] and -1.3[ppm/$^{\circ}C$] from $25^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Extremely selective high temperature superconducting (HTS) band -pass filters were developed for the base transceiver station applications of Digital Cellular communication Service (DCS). The filters have a bandwidth of 25 MHz at a center frequency of 834 MHz. There are 12 resonators which have spiral-meander microstrip-line structures in order to reduce far-field radiations with a reasonable tunability. As a result, the size of filters is 5 mm $\times$ 17 mm $\times$ 41 mm. Device characteristics exhibited a low insertion loss of -0.4 dB with a -0.2 dB ripple and a return loss better than -10 dB in the pass-band at 65 K. The out-of-band signals were attenuated better than 60 dB about 3.5 MHz from the lower band edge, and 3.8 MHz from the higher band edge.
