This study was conducted to determine the distribution of nitrogenous compounds to various tree parts and the extent of reserve accumulation in persimmon (Diospyros kaki) under various fruit-loads. This study also ascertained the proportion of storage nitrogen made available for the new growth the following year. On June 15, the fruit-load was adjusted to a leaf-fruit (L/F) ratio of 10, 20, and 30, and some trees were completely defruited. Between June 15 and November 11, the increase of total amino acids were greater with a high L/F ratio. The amino acids increased in the root were negligible at the 10-L/F ratio. Of the total amino acids increased during this period, the proportion distributed to the root was 64% in the 20-L/F, 18.5% in the 30-L/F, and 81% in the defruited trees, and the distribution to the fruits was 81% in 10-L/F, 12% in 20-L/F, and 35% in the 30-L/F trees. Leaf amino acids decreased in the 10-L/F trees. Total proteins increased in autumn were greater as the L/F ratio was higher. Total proteins were in the fruits the most, and the distribution to the permanent parts was decreased as the L/F ratio was decreased. At the L/F ratio of 30, 59% of the total proteins increased in the autumn was distributed to the fruits and 40% to the root. Leaf proteins decreased at 10 and 20 L/F ratios. During the new growth from April 10 to June 10 the following year, amino acids decreased in the old wood and 1-yr-old shoot, whereas proteins decreased only in the 1-year-old shoots. Amino acids and protein decreased by 540 mg and 610 mg, respectively, in the roots of the defruited trees. Total amino acid and proteins in the newly-grown parts were the most at 730 mg and 1290 mg, respectively, when defruited the previous year. They were the least at the 10-L/F ratio, being 120 mg and 400 mg, respectively.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of three different growth retardants for applying pot or bedding plant with 'Rialto', 'Elodie', and 'Raizan'. Ancymidol, uniconazole, and paclobutrazol were applied as a drench at various concentrations. In Oriental hybrid lily 'Rialto', no changes were observed not only plant height but also leaves and flowers in paclobutrazol treatment. But the growth of plant treated with ancymidol was inhibited above 30% compare to control regardless of concentrations. However, numbers of leaf and flower per plant were similar to those of controls. Plant height was similar to nontreated control in $1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole treatment but that reduced about 30% in drench application of 5 and $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole. Asiatic hybrid lily 'Elodie' was not different in growth between application of paclobutrazol and nontreatment as 'Rialto'. While, in all ancymidol treatments, plant height was 50~60% shorter than that of control. Also, numbers of leaves were reduced and days to flowering were slightly delayed in $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ancymidol treatment as compared with the control. All traits except plant height of $1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole were similar to control but there were differences of statistical significance between 5, $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole drench and nontreated control. Lilium ${\times}$ formolongi 'Raizan' like above two cultivars had no dwarf effect on height in paclobutrazol treatment. In drench application of ancymidol, plant height reduced over 60% than that of control regardless of concentrations. Especially, days to flowering were a little delayed with $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ paclobutrazol treatment. Plant height of $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole was about 26% shorter than that of control, but other traits were no differences between uniconazole treatment and control. In result, the drench application of ancymidol and uniconazole was pretty effective for usage as pot lily without great changes of quantitative traits.
We analyzed the changes of pulmonary function after decortication i 33 patients with chronic empyema thoracis. In 11 patients of them, scintigraphic lung perfusion scan were performed. The results are as follows; 1, Forced expiratory volume in one second(FEVI) increased from 2.30 L/sec to 2.65 L/sec after decorticati on (p = 0.008) . 2. In patients under 20 years-old, PEV 1 increased significantly(p=0.001). 3. In patients who had tuberculosis empyema thoracis, FEVI increased significantly(p=0.008). The post-operative FEVI increased significantly 24 months later(p=0.013). 4. Te post-operative FEV1 increased significantly 24 months later(p=0013). 5. Perfusion and FEV1 of diseased lung changed from 21.5% to 26.9%(p=0.046) and 0.56 L/sec to 0.78 L/sec(p=0.071) after decortication respectively and perfusion of non-diseased lung changed 78.4% to 72.9% after decortication(p=0.042).
Data were collected in Lake Daecheong from March 1997 to October 2002 and used to understand an annual change of water environmental factors and trophic states. The surface water temperature was ranged from $3.2^{\circ}C$ to $33.1^{\circ}C$ In the middle of February, water temperature was the lowest. Turbidity was ranged from 0.1 to 203.5 NTU, but the values of above 30 NTU were only measured at site 1. The total mean values of COD and Chl a were $3.6{\pm}1.4\;mg\;O_2\;L^{-1}$, $9.3{\pm}12.8\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$respectively. The concentrations of TP and TN were ranged from 0.14 to 5.09 mg N $L^{-1}$, 1 to $247\;{\mu}g\;P\;L^{-1}$ respectively. The total mean value of TN/TP ratio was $98.7{\pm}56.2$. The trophic states were ranged from mesotrophic to eutrophic in Lake Daecheong.
Studies were made on the optimization of media to c비tivate Thraustochytrium aureum A TCC 34304 for the enhanc엉d p production of linoleic acid. The medium optimization was made with the artificial sea water medium. Yeast extract, sodium g glutamate, peptone and tryptone were considered as nitrogen source. The effect of $\infty$ncentration of nitrogen source as well a as initial glucose on the production of linoleic acid were investigated to optimize the media. The maximum yield of lipid was 0 0.302 mg/g cell mass when initial glucose $\infty$ncentration was 10 g/L and sodium glutamate was used as nitrogen source, a and the yield of linoleic acid to unit cell mass was also maximum to be 8 % in that case. The highest linoleic acid c concentration was obtained in the initial glucose concentration 30 g/L regardless of the kinds of nitrogen source and the | linoleic acid concentration was 0.208 g/L when peptone was supplemented to be 2 g/L.
Useful Dianthus species were collected and selected from two native and seven foreign species distributed in Gangwon province. For in vitro breeding,. callus was induced from the explants of apical meristem, leaf, stem and the in vitro adventitious shoots on MS basal medium with 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L BA at 27$^{\circ}C$ under continuous light. After 3 weeks of culture, calli initiated the most highly from the leaf explants of D. chinensis Organogenic calli were able to be selected from the adventitious shoot-derived calli. For shoot regeneration, these organogenic calli were cultured on MS medium with the combination of 0.1 mg/L NAA+1.0 mg/L BA under continuous light. Multiple shoots were proliferated with low frequency (about 30%) from those adventitious shootderived calli. Also, shoots initiated directly from the adventitious shoot explants without callus formation at high frequency of 52% when cultured on N6 medium containing 0.1 mg/L NAA and 1.0 mg/L BA in D. gratianopol. Multiple shoots and plantlets grew well and rooted on MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/L NAA. Regenerants with well-developed roots were transferred to 8-cm pots containing vermiculite at 85% relative humidity and 27$^{\circ}C$ These plantlets were acclimatized in artificial soil mixture and transferred to the greenhouse for flowering with normal phenotypes. M28 Mutant line was selected with white flowers from 0.03M EMS-treated organogenic calli derived from in vitro adventitious shoot explants of D. chinensis and set seeds.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of nutrient density diets and sex on carcass and pork quality characteristics in finishing pigs. A total of 96 pigs(58.04 $\pm$ 6.85 kg) were divided into 2 groups(gilts and barrows), each sex group was assigned to 3 nutrient density(high : 18.5%, middle : 16.0% and low: 14.0% CP, respectively) and raised up to 1l0kg live weight. Each treatment had four replicates with three or five pigs per replicate. The treatments comprised the feeding regimes of 1) the low density diet for 60 days, 2) the middle nutrient density diet for the 30 days followed by a low nutrient density diet for the remaining 30 days and 3) the high nutrient density diet for the 30 days followed by a middle nutrient density diet for the remaining 30 days. Pigs were conventionally slaughtered, and then chilled overnight. Carcass characteristics and grades were determined on those carcasses, and pork loin muscle was removed from each left side at 5th to 13th rib for quality evaluation were evaluated. There were no differences in the carcass weight between sex and nutrient density. Dressing percent of L-L(gilts) treatment was significantly higher than that of other treatments(P< 0.05). Barrows showed a thicker back fat thickness than gilts. There were no difference in intramuscular fat, subcutaneous fat and springiness between sex and nutrient density. Intermuscular fat of barrows groups was significantly higher than the gilts groups(P < 0.05). In the meat quality characteristics, there were no difference in general composition, meat and fat color between sex and nutrient density. pH of L-L(gilts) treatment was significantly higher than that of other treatments(P < 0.05). Cooking loss and shear force value of H-M(barrows) treatment were significantly higher than those of other treatments(P< 0.05). Purge loss of barrows groups was significantly higher than the gilts groups(P < 0.05). Myoglobin content of H-M treatment was significantly lower than L-L and M-L treatments(P< 0.05). Texture of H-M treatment was higher than L-L and M-L treatments. The content of myristic, palmitic, palmitoleic and oleic acid were significantly higher in the barrows groups(P< 0.05). However, stearic, linoleic and arachidonic acid were significantly higher in the gilts(P < 0.05). Amino acid content of L-L treatment was significantly higher than M-L and H-M treatments(P < 0.05). In conclusion, carcass and pork quality characteristics were affected by sex and nutrient density.

The occurrence of natural radionuclides like uranium and radon in groundwater was hydrochemically examined based on 40 well groundwaters in Mungyeong area. The range of electrical conductivity (EC) value in the study area was $68{\sim}574{\mu}S/cm$. In addition to the increase of EC value, the content of cations and anions also tends to increase. Uranium concentrations ranged from $0.03{\sim}169{\mu}g/L$ (median value, $0.82{\mu}g/L$) and radon concentrations ranged from 70~30,700 pCi/L (median value, 955 pCi/L). Only 1 out of 40 wells (2.5%) showed uranium concentration exceeding the maximum contaminant level (MCL; $30{\mu}g/L$) proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Radon concentrations of eight wells (20%) exceeded AMCL(Alternative maximum contaminant level) of the US EPA (4,000 pCi/L). Four out of those eight wells even exceeded Finland's guideline level (8,100 pCi/L). When concentrations of uranium and radon were investigated in terms of geology, the highest values are generally associated with granite. The uranium and radon levels observed in this study are low in comparison to those of other countries with similar geological settings. It is likely that the measured value was lower than the actual content due to the inflow of shallow groundwater by the lack of casing and grouting.
To improve the productivity of peroxidase (POD) of cell line SP-47 derived from cell suspension cultures of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L) Lam.cv White Star), we optimized culture conditions including the composition and concentration of plant growth regulators and carbon source, and the cell inoculum size. When one g (fr wt) of cells was inoculated into 50 mL TL medium supplemented with l mg/L 2,4-D and 30g/L sucrose in 300 mL Erlenmeyer flask at 25$^{\circ}C$ in the dark (100rpm), the POD activity per g cell dry wt was maximized to be about 6,800 units after 25 days of subculture, which was about 30 times higher than that of intact roots of horseradish plants grown in the greenhouse, but the cell growth was maximum after 15 days of subculture. The protein content per g cell dry wt maintained almost plateau and after 25 days of subculture decreased as culture Proceeded further whereas the POD specific activity (unit/mg protein) was about two times higher after subculture and continuously increased from 12 days to the end of cultures (40 days). The POD isozyme patterns showed almost the same regardless of cell growth stage, but some acidic isozymes were slightly increased after 25 days of subculture. These results indicate that POD activity in suspension cultures of sweet potato is closely associated with cell growth and stresses derived from cell culture renditions and medium depletion. Due to its high POD activity the SPL47cell line seems to be suitable for the mass production of POD.
Effects of operating time, pH, temperature, concentration and addition of proteolytic enzyme on permeate flux for the ultrafiltration of gelatin and bovine serum albumin(BSA) solutions were studied. The results showed that permeate flux of gelatin solution was maintained almost constant during the operating time, and that of BSA solution was decreased to 66% of the initial value after 40 min operation. The permeate flux of gelatin solution was increased by increasing temperature. The permeate flux of BSA solution was constant in the temperature range of 30~$50{\circ}C$, but increased at $60{\circ}C.$. The permeate fluxes of gelatin and BSA solution showed minimum values near the isoelectric point of pH 5.0. The permeate fluxes of 1%(w/v) and 6% gelatin solution were $43.0l/m^2\cdot hr$ and $13.5l/m^2\cdot hr$, respectively. Those of 1% and 4% BSA solution were $33.0l/m^2\cdot hr$ and $14.0l/m^2\cdot hr$, respectively. The permeate fluxes of gelatin and BSA solutions were decreased to 68.6% and 57.6% of their initial values by increasing their concentration, respectively. The permeate fluxes of gelatin and BSA solutions were enhanced by 30% with the addition of proteolytic enzyme.
