Three Cases of Pulmonary Paragonimiasis in a Family after Ingestion of Raw Fresh-water Crayfishes caught in a Stream of Wolchulmountain (월출산 민물가재 생식에 의한 한 가족내 폐흡충증 3례)

  • Human infection with the lung fluke Paragonimus westermani has become rare in Korea. Human paragonimiasis is caused by eating raw fresh-water crayfishes or crabs infected with larval metacercariae. Recently, we experienced three cases of pulmonary paragonimiasis in a family. They ate raw fresh-water crayfishes that lived in a stream in Wolchulmountain. All the parients had hypereosinophilia and pulmonary infiltrates with pleural effusion or hydropneumothorax, which did not improve on antibiotics. Ingestion of raw crayfishes was a clue for paragonimiasis. Positive results were shown both on intradermal skin test and ELISA for Paragonimus westermani specific IgG. After treatment with praziquantel, the patients showed an improvement. This is the first familial human paragonimiasis, reported from Wolchulmountain in Chonnam Province where there had been no previous cases of paragonimiasis.

Increasing Instream flow in Nonsancheon by Water Storage Securing Scenario of Upstream Reservoirs (상류 저수지군의 저수량 확보 시나리오에 의한 논산천의 유지유량 증가)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of increasing instream flow at Nonsancheon stream of Nonsan city by securing water storages in upstream reservoirs; Ge-ryong, Gyoung-cheon, Dae-dun, and Tab-jeong. The paralleled and cascaded upstream reservoir operations for 8 storage securing scenarios were considered to simulate daily streamflows at Nonsan station. Using Tab-jeong reservoir water storage, the DAWAST model's parameters were determined, and the verified result showed Nash-Schcliffe's coefficient of 0.666. Instream flows were analyzed to supply maximum $59.85Mm^3$ on an annually average from upstream reservoir storage securing scenarios. The storage securing set of 2 m heightened Ge-ryong, 5 m Dae-dun, and 1 m Tab-jeong showed that the additional secured water storages were $17.132Mm^3$ and instream flow at Nonsan station was increased to $2.183m^3/s$, 2 times of present condition.

  • An open water rudder test was carried out to figure out the flow characteristics around a twin rudder at $Re=1.5\times10^4$. In the analysis, the unique characteristics of a twin rudder, which effects rudder farces, were explained. The analysis is included varying angles of attack fram 10 to 30 degree. In this paper, the measured results has been compared with each other to predict the performance characteristics of a twin rudder's 2-dimensional section by 2-frame grey level cross correlation PIV method. The side force of the rudder could be mainly improved at 0.75L.

  • It has been well-known that the Nonpoint Source (NPS) pollutions are the primary contributors to water quality degradation in the receiving water bodies as well as the Point Source (PS) pollutions. To develop an effective management practice for water quality improvement, pollutant loads must be first estimated. In many studies, the Numeric Integration (NI) method has been used because of its ease of application, irrespective of the total number of samples collected for each storm event. Thus, there have been needs for more accurate pollutant load estimation with a limited number of water quality samples. In this study, NI method and regression method using the USGS ESTIMATOR model were comparatively used to calculate the pollutant loads for the Wolgokri watershed, Gangwon Province. The $NO_{3}$-N, T-N, and T-P loads using NI method and ESTIMATOR model were 13.85 kg/ha, 45.92 kg/ha, and 1.887 kg/ha, and 11.93 kg/ha,43.20 kg/ha, and 1.650 kg/ha, respectively. The estimated loads using ESTIMATOR model were lower than those using NI method by $86\%$, $94\%$, and $87\%$. These discrepancies in the estimated loads using a different load estimation method could be explained in that the total number of samples were not sufficient enough for NI method. Thus, ESTIMATOR model is recommended for the frequently stream discharge and less frequently measured water quality data.

  • Development of digital media and computer graphics related research had changed the overall stream of cultural art and our daily life, as well as its development also had an effect on a fresh and exciting area of cultural arts such as the new media art, interactive art and real-time performing. In this paper, we used emotional expression techniques that they lead audiences on the process of natural communication by combining the particle system of computer graphics with performance based screen art.   • The purpose of this study was to develope an Inquiry-Based Environmental Education Program for Elementary School Students by Using DO meter based on the theory of the inquiry-based environmental education. The developed program consisted of 5 constituents of Environmental Studies for the Environmental Education (ESEE) and was applied to the 6th grade students of elementary school. The inquiry activities have been conducted around Gigyechon stream in Pohang city where the school was located. The evaluation form to evaluate the environmental education programs in the perspective of the Inquiry-Based Environmental Education was developed and used to evaluate after applying the developed programs. As a result, it was known that the developed programs have been well constructed and this program would help fostering the environmental understanding of the world. And also the inquiry-based environmental education was suitable for the environmental education targeting the elementary school students. This study has a significance in the perspective that the concept and the theory of inquiry-based environmental education has been realized into the program suitable for the elementary school students and that the new direction of the environmental education for the elementary school has been suggested. In addition, the developed evaluation form to assess the effectiveness of the program is expected to be helpful for the future studies related to development of the inquiry-based environmental education programs.

The Effects of tDCS and Montoya Stair Task on Sensorimotor Recovery and GFAP Expression in MCAo induced Stroke Rat Model

  • This study is intended to examine the tDCS and Montoya stair task(MST) on sensorimotor recovery and glial scar expression in MCAo induced stroke model of rat. To achieve this goal, this study selected 80 SD rats of 8 weeks. The experiment groups were divided them into four groups, and assigned 20 rats to each group. Group I was a experimental control group; GroupII was a tDCS application group after MCAo; Group III was a MST application group after MCAo; Group IV was a tDCS and MST application group after MCAo. In each group, neurological function test measurement, motor behavior test, montoya stair task test, immunohistochemistric finding of GFAP expression finding were analyzed. In motor behavior test, the outcome of group I was significantly difference than the other group, especially from 14days. In montoya stair task test, the outcome of group I was significantly lower than the other group especially, group II were significantly different on 14days and group IV was most significantly difference than the other group. In immunohistochemistric finding, group II, III, IV were decrease GFAP expression on depend on time stream. These results throughout the MCAo due to focal ischemic brain injury rat model four weeks tDCS and MST was applied, when the neurobehavioural, upper extremity function and ability, histopathologic data suggest that sensorimotor function recovery and a positive influence on glial scar decrease and confirmed that.

Characteristics of Non-point Source Runoff in Housing and Industrial Area during Rainfall (강우시 주택 및 공단지역의 비점오염원 유출특성)

  • Non-point source pollutant is exerting a serious influence on the water quality, since the characteristics of stormwater runoff is varied by the land usage pattern of an area and a basin, and all sorts of pollutants on the earth in rainfall flow into the urban stream. This study estimated EMC of each pollutant to investigate the characteristics of stormwater runoff by separating the urban area as the housing area and industrial area. As a result of the analysis, the first flush effect occurred in the non-point source pollutant of housing area and industrial area, as the runoff concentration gradually reduces after it rapidly increases in the initial rainfall, and in case of the non-point source pollutant the control of first stage rain-water. It is considered to require the continuous follow-up study such as the scale of long-term rainfall event and water quality data, land usage pattern by GIS method, database of topography and geological features, and so forth.

Pollutant Load Characteristics from a Small Mountainous Agricultural Watershed in the North Han River Basin (북한강 중류 산간농업 소하천에서의 오염부하특성분석)

  • Natural environment of the Wolgokri stream watershed, located in Chuncheon, Gangwon province, Korea, has been well preserved as a traditional agricultural watershed. To analyze characteristics of NPS pollution generated from an mountainous agricultural watershed, the flow and water qualities of the study watershed were monitored and were analyzed to estimate pollution loads. Annual runoff volume ratio was $70.4\%$. Concentrations of T-N, T-p, COD, and TOC were higher when monthly rainfall was between $0\~30mm$ than those when monthly rainfall was between $30\~70mm$. However, the concentrations varied considerably when monthly rainfall was higher than 100mm. The flow weighted mean concentrations(mg/L) of BOD, COD, TOC, $NO_3-N$, T-N, T-P and SS were 1.96, 2.72, 3.32, 1.41, 4.70, 0.187 and 13.36, respectively. The BOD, SS, T-N and T-P loads of July, 2004 were $48\%,\;17\%,\;51\%\;and\;32\%$ of annual load, respectively. The BOD, COD, TOC, $NO_3-N$, T-N, T-p, and SS loads (kg/ha) from Mar. 2004 to Apr. 2005 were 19.09, 26.55, 32.39, 13.85, 45.92, 1.887 and 130.18, respectively. The highest concentrations of BOD, NO3-N, T-N, T-p, SS, COD and TOC were found before the flow reached the peak runoff, possibly due to the first flushing effect. Generally, pollution loads of the Wolgokri watershed were not that significant. Phosphorus load, however, was higher enough to cause eutrophication in the receiving water body It was recommended that best management practices need to be implemented to reduce phosphorus sources.

Analyses of Synchronous Fluorescence Spectra of Dissolved Organic Matter for Tracing Upstream Pollution Sources in Rivers (상류 오염원 추적을 위한 용존 유기물질 Synchronous 형광스펙트럼 분석 연구)

  • Fluorescence measurements of dissolved organic matter(DOM) have the superior advantages over other analysis tools for applying to water quality management. A preliminary study was conducted to test the feasibility of applying synchronous fluorescence measurements for tracing and monitoring pollution sources in a small stream located in an upstream area of the Sooyoung watershed in Busan. The water quality of the small stream is affected by leachate from sawdust pile and discharge of untreated sewage. The sampling sites included an upstream site, two pipes discharging untreated sewage, leachate from sawdust, and a downstream site. Of the five field samples, the leachate was distinguished from the other samples by a high peak at a lower wavelength range and a blunt peak at 350nm, suggesting that synchronous fluorescence can be used as a discrimination tool for monitoring the pollution. The efficacy of various indices derived from the spectral features to discriminate the pollution source was tested for well-defined mixture of the sawdust leachate and the upstream stream by comparing (1)the difference between measured values and those predicted based on mass balance and the characteristics of the two samples and (2)the linear correlations between index values and mass ratios of the sample mixtures. Of various discrimination indices selected, fluorescence intensities at 276 nm$({\Delta}\lambda=30nm)$and 347 nm$({\Delta}\lambda=60nm)$ were suggested as promising potential discrimination indices for the sawdust pollution source. Despite the limited number of samples and the study area, this study illustrates the evaluation process that should be followed to develop rapid, low-cost discrimination indices to monitor pollution sources based on end member mixing analyses.
