Screening of Antifungal Natural Products with Inhibitory Effects on (1,3)$\beta$-glucan Synthase ((1,3)$\beta$-Glucansynthase효소 억제 활성을 가진 천연물의 검색)

  • Antifungal activities of the extracts from 26 medicinal plants were investigated utilizing paper-disk diffusion method and (1,3)β-glucan synthase inhibitory assay. (1,3)β-glucan synthase is considered as valuable target in the development of antifungal agents. Among the screened extracts, the ethyl acetate extract of Equisetum arvense, the ethyl acetate extract of Polygonum aviculare, the butanol extract of Crataegus pinnatifida and the n-hexane extract of Saussurea lappa showed significant antifungal activities on Candida albacans in both disk diffusion and enzyme assays.

Anti-arthritic Effect of Glucosamine and Oriental Herbal Composition

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of an anti-inflammatory and analgesic action of the glucosamine HCl (Glucosamine) and SH-1 (Glucosamine + Oriental herbal composition combined group). Male sprague-Dawley rats $(200{\sim}250g)$ and ICR mice $(20{\sim}30g)$ were randomized and these experimental groups were divided into 4 groups. Two control group were given as negative control (saline) and positive control (Ibuprofen, 100 mg/kg) and two groups given as oral administration of Glucosamine (320 m/kg) and SH-1. Carrageenan induced paw edema test, hot plate method, croton oil induced granuloma, capillary permeability test and acetic acid writhing syndrome were also shown to be comparable in the SH-1 group to anti-inflammatory drug group such as positive control group (Ibuprofen). Although further studies should be performed to confirm the effects of SH-1, present results suggest that the combined administration of SH-1 have potential action in anti-inflammatory and analgesic action. It could be applicable for the improvement of arthritic symptoms as a new diet-supplement.

  • Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the lung is a very rare tumor. Originally described in the nasopharynx as lymphoepithelioma, this carcinoma has also been found in the stomach, esophagus, thymus, cervix, urinary bladder, skin, and salivary glands. Histologically, it is an undifferentiated carcinoma that has a syncytial appearance with tumor cells and is infiltrated by numerous lymphocytes, macrophages, and plasma cells. LELC of the lung occurs more commonly in Asians, particularly Chinese. Many studies have reported the association between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and LELC of the lung in Asian patients. A 45-year-old man had a solitary pulmonary nodule on a routine chest X-ray examination. As a malignant tumor was suspected, surgical resection was performed to establish the correct diagnosis. The pathology of the excised tumor demonstrated LELC of the lung. This is the first report of LELC of the lung in Korea.

Inhibitory effects of flavonoids on TNF-α-induced IL-8 gene expression in HEK 293 cells

  • Due to their multiple biological activities, flavonoids have gained attention as potentially useful therapeutics for a variety of diseases including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and autoimmune diseases. In this study, we demonstrated that several flavonoids, including kaempferol, quercetin, fisetin, and chrysin block TNF-$\alpha$ induced IL-8 promoter activation and gene expression in HEK 293 cells. In addition, phosphorylation and degradation of $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ and translocation of NF-${\kappa}B$ p65 were inhibited by these flavonoids in TNF-$\alpha$-stimulated HEK 293 cells. Furthermore, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in response to TNF-$\alpha$ was reduced by the flavonoids. Moreover, although pretreatment with fisetin, quercetin, or chrysin decreased cell viability, kaempferol did not. Taken together, these findings suggest that kaempferol would be useful for the treatment of TNF-$\alpha$-induced inflammatory diseases.

  • Tetanus is a life-threatening infection that is rare in the developed country. Because of the rarity: of the disease, the clinician may be unfamiliar with the clinical presentation and unsuspecting of the diagnosis. However, tetanus can rapidly progress into lethal muscle spasms accompanied by respiratory insufficiency, and it has a mortality of 15 to 30%. The most common presenting symptom was trismus, followed by neck pain, dysphagia, generalized pain and facial muscle contractions. Dysphagia is a common symptom of tetanus, but not common as an initial symptom, the correct diagnosis and adequate therapy are likely to be delayed. Treatment involves administration of penicillin, tetanus immune-globulin, debridement of wounds, aggressive supportive care, and initiation of active immunization. We report an elderly woman presenting with dysphagia as an initial symptom of tetanus with review of literature.

  • Purpose: The ultimate purpose of this study is to analyze this survey to understand the overall contents of college career guidance and psychological counseling, and to utilize it to improve the quality of learning and provide career guidance. Research design, data and methodology: The research period and survey subject are approximately one month from 2020.12.01(Tue) to 2021.01.03(Sun). Convenience sampling was conducted using a structured questionnaire composed of a 5-point Likert scale and 5 open-ended questions. As the analysis method, descriptive statistics such as reliability analysis and frequency analysis of Cronbach's α coefficient of internal consistency were mainly used. Data Analysis Statistical program was analyzed using SPSS 25 version. Results: The item with the highest score is that the counseling and counseling-related non-specialized programs offered by the Student Counseling Center are helpful for school life (3.56 points). Conversely, the lowest question is that seminars accompanied by priests are helpful for study (3.38 points). Conclusions: The average score of 5 questions in the career guidance and psychological counseling areas is 3.38 out of 5.

Study on the Elastic Characteristics of Living Cells using Atomic Force Microscope Indentation Technique

  • In this work, imaging and study of elastic property of the living cell was performed. The motivation of this work was to seek the possibility of exploiting Young's modulus as a disease indicator using Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and also to gain fundamental understanding of cell mechanics for applications in medical nanorobots of the future. L-929 fibroblast adherent cell was used as the sample. Imaging condition in cell culturing media environment was done in very low speed ($20{\mu}m/ s$) compared to that in the ambient environment. For measuring the Young's modulus of the living cell, AFM indentation method was used. From the force-distance curve obtained from the indentation experiment the Young's modulus could be derived using the Hertz model. The Young's modulus of living L-929 fibroblast cell was $1.29{\pm}0.2$ kPa.
