  • Water pollution is becoming a serious problem in the populous cities and coastal areas near industrial complex. Sometimes, phytoplankton is considered as the most important element in the coastal environment. Phytoplankton is easily estimated by measuring chlorophyll content in the laboratory. In this study, to build up estimating algorithm of the chlorophyll amount related to the monitoring of coastal environments in Kwangyang bay, the correlationship the respective in situ observed data with Landsat TM and SeaWiFS satellite Image was analyzed. It showed that Landsat TM band 3 image has the highest correlationship with observed data, and based upon this result the monitoring algorithm of chlorophyll in coastal area was extracted. This algorithm will be an important for extracting and controlling environment elements in coastal areas in the future. And it has a significant meaning that it has established a spatial data construction in which satellite image alone could monitor the coastal environment.

  • Feeding habits of juvenile Liparis tanakai collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay were studied. L. tanakai (2.0-6.0 cm SL) was a carnivore which consumed mainly amphipods (caprellids and gammarids) and caridean shrimps. Its diets also included a large amount of copepods, polychaetes and small fishes. Three distinct ontogenetic feeding groups were noted: (1) the individuals of 2.0-2.5 cm SL preyed heavily on copepods, (2) individuals of 2.5-4.0 cm SL fed mainly on amphipods. (3) individuals over 4.0 cm SL preyed mainly on caridean shrimps and small fishes. The dietary breadth of each size class showed relatively low value, and this means that juvenile L. tanakai depends on only few kinds of food organisms.

  • Feeding habits of Limanda yokohamae collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay were studied. L. yokohamae (1-16 cm SL) was a carnivore which consumed mainly polychaetes. Its diets included a significant quantity of amphipods (gammarids and caprellids) as well as small quantities of gastropods and ophiuroids. L. yokohamae showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals less than 4 cm SL preyed mainly on amphipods. However, polychaetes were heavily selected with increasing fish size while the portion of the diet attributable to amphipods decreased sharply. Polychaetes were the major prey organisms for all seasons. Dietary breadth of each size class shows relatively low value, and this means that L. yokohamae depends on only few kinds of food organisms.

  • The eco-hydrodynamic model was used to simulation water quality of Kwangyang Bay according to the environmental variation for appropriate water quality management. The mean concentration of COD was 3.3㎎/L, this exceeded the third class of water quality criteria. Waste water discharging loads showed approximately 90% of total pollutant loads. For satisfaction to below 10㎍/L of Chl. a and 2㎎/L of COD, above 35% reduction of present pollutant loads of point sources are needed.

  • In this paper, 4 representative soft clayey soils in south Korea are selected to estimate the geotechnical characteristics and provide the instructions avaliable for construction works; Inchon Coast, Kum River Estuary, Kwangyang Bay, and Nakdong River Estuary. Total 2250 boring data are collected to construct the data base system on selected areas from Korea geotech DB system, scientific journals, theses, and site investigation reports. Considering the geological, topographical and regional features, geotechnical properties, deformation and strength characteristics of 4 soft clayey soils are evaluated by analyzing the constructed DB system statistically.

  • Laboratory determination of acoustic property for unconsolidated sediment of Kwangyang Bay was carried out. The compressional wave velocity was correlated to other physical properties and sediment textures to establish a geoacoustic model of the bay. The model was compared to the North Pacific continental terrace sediment. Velocity of the bay is systematically lower(0.02-0.04km/s) than that of the North Pacific. Average velocity of the bay is 1.521km/s. The lowest velocity is measured at the southwestern part of the bay. This area coincides with high amount of fine-grained sediment related to slower circulation. The overall tendency is, however, similar to the North Pacific continental terrace sediment.

  • The seasonal changes in species composition of fishes in Kwangyang Bay were determined using bimonthly samples with a bottom trawl at five stations from February to December 1990. A total of 32 families 54 species, 9,497 individuals, and 65,838.2g of fishes were collected. Leiognathus nuchalis occupied 64.9% of the total number of individuals. L. nuchalis and Konosirus punctatus occupied 28.8% and 22.3% of the total biomass, respectively. The number of species, the number of individuals and the biomass were lowest in February. More than 20 species occurred during the period when the water temperature was higher than $12^{\circ}C$. The number of individuals was the highest in October. The biomass was the highest in April. The community structure of fish in Kwangyang Bay showed the seasonal variation according to Leiognathus nuchalis and Konosirus punctatus.

  • The age and growth of the short-necked clam, Paphia undalata, was investigated from 546 samples randomly collected in December 2000 in Kwangyang Bay, Korea. Ages were determined from ring radius of shell and the maximum age was observed to be 2 years. The relationship between shell length (SL) and shell height (SH) of Paphia undalata was SL = 0.2105 + 1.7569 $\times$ SH ($R^2$= 0.98), and the shell length (SL)-total weight (TW) relationship was TW = 2.5824 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ $\times$ S $L^{2.6769}$ ($R^2$= 0.92). The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated by the non-linear method, with values as follows: $L_{\infty}$ = 81.46 mm, K : 0.20/year, $t_{0}$ = -1.19 year. The von Bertalnanffy growth equation was $L_{t}$ = 81.46(1- $e^{-0}$.20(t+1.19)/), $W_{t}$ = 33.68(1- $e^{-0}$.20(t+1.19)/)$^{2.6769}$.

  • Resident's attitude and evaluation about local or urban development policies is a major factor in the process of the regional and urban 1)tanning and its practices. Therefore there are numerous studies pointing to analysis about the evaluation of the urban development policies. The purpose of this paper is concerned on the residents'cognitions, attitudes and evaluation about of urban development policy of Sunchon City in South Korea. Research area, Suncgon city, has been served as a central place of eastern Chollanamdo since 1920 and now functions as economic and commercial leading city of Kwangyang-bay area. In addition, Sunchon city is fastly growned with the influence of national development policy including the establishment of major industrial estates and the construction of container port in Kwangyang-bay area. In the overall cognition and evaluation about the quality of life of Sunchon city, most people are satisfied with the quality of life of urban living comparing with near cities such as Kwangyang and Yosu city. In particular, the level of satisfaction about education, transportation, natural environment are relatively higher than economic condition and living facilities. Most of residents have positive attitude and evaluation about the image of future urban development, and prefer to culture and education city in urban function of Sunchon city. Therefore, in order to function as a central city of Kwangyang-bay area. Sunchon city have to adopt new urban development policy including such as reconstruction of urban spatial structure, strengthening of culture and education functions, and the related facilities, restructuring of regional industrial structure. and expansion of commercial and shopping facilities.
